Another thread spawned me to ask: Do you sleep with a stuffed animal, blanket, or other item? Personally (uh oh, big secret coming out!), I sleep best with my childhood bear tucked under my arm. I think this has more to do with habit and I find it feels weird sleeping without something tucked under my arms. If I use a pillow instead, I'm totally fine, so even though I have an emotional attachment, it's more habit than anything else at this point. I also cannot sleep without a sleeping mask. I'm pretty light sensitive, but now I'm also used to the pressure on my eyes. I'm a weird sleeper I know.... How about you?
PS- For the record, the bear stayed at home for the honeymoon ;)
I used to sleep with my baby blanket or a doggie stuffed animal. It has since been retired.
My blanket went away ages ago, agreed. He lives in the nightstand. I wonder if he's been eaten by moths yet?! LOL!
Does a real animal count? Haha, my cat Holly snuggles up next to my head or on my chest or legs every night.
@bakerella: Haha yeah I haven't gotten rid of the baby blanket, it just sits with my other stuffed animals that I can't get rid of!
I don't but FI has "holdy." "Holdy" is actually three separate pillows he sleeps with. One under his head, one to the left of his body and one to the right of his body. They act as "stuffed animals" (but they're just normal pillows) and things to hold for him on all sides.
I stopped sleeping with Laverne, my beloved stuffed flamingo, when I got the cats. I had to hide it because they would try to eat her! Now I just sleep with Mike and the kitties.
@lilyfaith: LOL! Good point! I usually wake up with two tabby cats on me too. How in the world does DH fit in the bed with all my animals?! LOL!
I saw a poll on the news a while ago that said that 1 in 5 men traveled with a stuffed animal. That was pretty shocking to me!
I have a small square micro bead pillow I've been sleeping with for a few years, but the beads are starting to smush and I've been searching everywhere for a new one by the same brand (Sqush) because it's incredible.
Technically, yes. My DH has a duck and I have a bunny that are always in the area between our pillows. So I guess you could say so!
i used to (clifford the big red dog!), but stopped at some point during college (can't remember when exactly...)
I slept with my childhood bear well into college. When I had a guy spending the night I'd usually put it on the tv stand though. Then when I got my dog a few years ago I packed him away because the pup sleeps with me and he is a liiiiiittle too fond of stuffed animals. :)
@CorgiTales: I put the bear away for guys, but at some point when DH and I got serious the bear snuck back out, LOL! I guess that was when we hit "the comfort zone".... I'll have to retire him soon, the bear was actually my sister's first and then was given to me when I was born, so he's 36 years old and starting to get pretty worn out!
we have this girl in our group of friends who is really weird. she brings stuffed animals with her whenever she spends the night somewhere. for instance, a huge group of us went to a cabin for the 4th of July and she brought like 3 stuffed animals with her. And she got mad if anyone touched them or joked around about them. When we were drunk and she wasn't looking we took photos of them in compromising positions and she was really upset when she saw them. We all thought it was weird for a 24 year old to be so stuck on her stuffed toys, especially in front of her peers.
Whenever FI is gone(which is 95% of the time), I sleep with a stuffed hippo named Seymour that belongs to him. It started out as a security thing when he joined the military because it reminded me of him, then it turned into a habit.
@amariem25: Wow. That sounds like some serious attachment issues. I certainly wouldn't bring a stuffed animal anywhere that I thought my friends would see it, LOL! On the other hand, I guess if you're that comfortable in your own skin, who are we to judge?!
I don't sleep with a stuffed animal, but I do sleep with one of my husband's shirts. Whichever one he's worn that day. I know it might be a little weird, but neither of us are cuddly sleepers, and I like having something to curl up with that smells like him (but won't snore in my ear, drool on my face, or cut off circulation). Lucky for me he thinks it's endearing.
I can't believe I'm about to admit this, but I sleep w/ Coco...a giraffe pillow pet:

I always sleep w/ it unfolded under my arm since I sleep on my side. It helps keep my arm from falling asleep. But unlike someone from another poster's story, I do leave it at home if I go away :)
Edit: Our two pups sometimes sleep w/ us. One of them, Autumn, will fight her way to get to my neck to cuddle up to me.
I sleep with Huntley T, my teddy bear that I got for my first Christmas when I was 3 months old. My husband is used to it. I just like having something to hang onto, and a pillow is too fat around. He's the perfect hourglass shape that I can kind of stuff him under my armpit and sleep with my head on his head.
My husband always says when we have a baby he's going to give him my bear... not funny.
Stuffed animals: I have several special ones that stayed in my bed at all times up until I moved in with my husband. They're now on the windowsill above the bed.
Real animals: Our dog and cat curl up in the bed with us every night.
Other items: I have a Washington Redskins sweatshirt that my dad gave me when I was nine, and I've slept with it every night since I was about eleven. Not wearing it, but with the sleeve covering my eyes. Works better than an eye mask. I doubt anyone has got something weirder than that.
Does my husband count!? lol
I sleep with my daughter (not by choice, she always toddles in around 3 a.m.) who always brings baby alice and baby bella... Yes, they were named after twilight characters! haha
I sleep by hugging a pillow. FI always gets jealous! There's just something way more comfortable having something soft with your arms wrapped around it.
if fi and my dogs count as a stuffed animal.... then yes!!! :)
Oh yes, LOL - - I sleep with my Hippo...I got it with mom my in Montana. It was the first day of our road trip from Seattle WA to Upstate NY for my sophomore year of college in 1999. Since that trip we learned my mom has a terminal disease. Hippo does indeed go everywhere with me, and, I'm pretty sure he will until he needs to 'stay ay home' only
He's a baby animal and he has a rattle, LOL he gets washed once a week

No, the stuffed animals were shoved into the back of my closet years ago. Now I snuggle up to a good book every night! And my husband...

My husband pillow, that is. :P
I slept with a stuffed animal until about a year ago(when I got my dog. She kept trying to thrash my cow). Before the cow, I had a rabbit that I had to retire to the shelf because it started falling apart. i've had her for over 20 yrs :)
I used to sleep with tons of stuffed animals on my bed, but after moving in with DH I just snuggle him instead. Well, I don't even snuggle much, there's just always part of me touching part of him. A comfort thing I guess. On the rare ocassion I snuggle with one of my pillows, it usually ends up on the floor since we only have a double bed. Funny story. He kept trying to snuggle closer and closer to me Saturday night/morning and I almost fell out of the bed at one point because there wasn't any room for me anymore. That was a first lol
I college I would sleep with this monkey FI gave me as a surprise gift my senior year of high school. It was my way of feeling him close to me. I especially loved it when it would get left at his dorm and in his bed and when I got it back it would smell like him. Since we moved in together and out of the dorms I have him to cuddle with. I usually curl up to his arm like I would a stuffed animal.
I sleep with a monkey stuffed animal :-X. FI gave it to me about 5 years ago. He won it for me at an amusement park. It was the only one there and the belly said "I love you" with a pair of red lips. It was the cutest thing :-). I have slept with it ever since. I appropriately named him Mono (meaning "cute" or "monkey" in Spanish). The picture I am attaching has two of my monkies in it. While the other monkey is cute, Mono has a special place in my heart (Mono is the pink monkey). He reminds me of FI every time I look at him ( we don't live together).
@bakerella: I have the same habit of needing to have my arm/hand curled around something when I go to sleep. I have a small bear- Ruth- that I still sleep with every night because of that. She's a perfect fit for the crook of my arm. She's been with me since the day I was brought home from the hospital (except for college- I brought a replacement bear with me there because I didn't trust drunk roomates to be respectful of her).
I also sleep with a large bunny- Thumper- under my head each night. When I was growing up my mom told me that he protected my dreams as I slept. I of course don't believe that now, but so many years of using him as a pillow has worn him in so well that my head fits perfectly and I find that regular pillows just aren't as comfortable! LOL Luckily my fiance thinks it's sweet. :)
I have a build-a-bear bear that now lives on my dresser, but I also break him back out when I'm upset and just want something to snuggle with while I sleep.
I sleep with my pit bull (evethough FI gets annoyed), she usually gets pushed off before morning comes but she helps me fall asleep.
I slept with my stuffed animal from childhood until I moved in with my hubby. I've since switched to a body pillow.
I also have to use an eye mask, otherwise I'm awake when the sun comes up.
I used to sleep with "Sherbert" he was a purple teddy bear that looks like Lotso from Toy Story 3. But after years of use he started to show his age. I put new stuffing in him but I was worried that he would fall apart, so now he sits on a chair in my bedroom and I sleep with a soft square blue pillow. I sleep on my side and I find it very comfortable to have something in my arms.
@bakerella: I also have to use a sleep mask. I have dark drapes over my window but it doesn't block enough of the morning sun. I use ear pluggs too, SO snores.
I have always slept with a dog in my bed except for my college years. I have a hard time sleeping if neither one of them are with me. My poor dogs LOL
I only sleep with a stuffed animal when I sleep alone. Part of the first b-day gift DH gave me was a pillow/animal in the shape of a duck. He named him Quackers and I slept with him while DH drove across the country for 5 weeks. I left him at my parents house and now when I visit my family alone, I cuddle Quackers!
When FI or I travel for work, I usually just cuddle the extra pillow. I agree with PPs - it's just nice and comforting to hold something.
FI and I were in a long-distance relationship for four years, during which time he bought me a stuffed animal to keep me company when he could not. While we're no longer long-distance, we're not living together till we're married. So I still allow the stuffed animal to keep me company at night when he can't. :)
