Do you take public transportation? How long is your commute?

So I just started taking public transportation, and its not that bad.  We are trying to reduce our commuting expenses.  I was spending $40 a week on gas plus with my husband's car, that doubles to about $80 a week. We were spending at least $240 month on gas.

The one thing I did have to get over was the extra time it takes to commute. My commute if I drive is between 45 to 1.5 hrs (depending on traffic).  Now it is always 1.5 hours but I can sleep on the bus and it's so much calmer now that I don't have to deal with the stress of traffic.

Plus, my company gives us a free monthly bus pass. I have no idea why I didn't take advantage of this sooner.

Anyway, back to my question, how long is your commute?

@yrret107: Before I moved and quit my job my commute was about 30 min. I had a 10-15min walk to the subway and then a 10-15 min subway ride. It really felt like no commute at all. It was nice to have some time to read on the subway and so I didn't mind if the train was a bit slow because it meant more reading time.

I have to drive since theres no public transportation near home or work.  It's about 30 minutes no traffic to max of about 50 if there is.  It's all one laned back roads.

i'm currently unemployed, but FI takes public transit.  if he gets his lazy un-butt out of bed early enough, he can catch the bus a hundred yards or so from where we live.  otherwise i have to drive him to one of the two park-and-rides 5-10 minutes away, depending on traffic and how i catch the lights.  (or he can drive himself, but at the moment my son's car seat is in his car and it's a total PITA to move from one car to another...it's just easier for me to drive him since DS and i are up when he leaves anyway, and he can take the direct bus home.)  his bus ride from the stop or either of the park-and-rides is just over half an hour.  to drive into town, it would probably take close to the same amount of time (he works in downtown minneapolis), but he'd play hell finding a parking place and it would cost an arm and a leg.  his employer pays for a monthly transit pass good for the bus or train, so it's a no-brainer.  the light rail park-and-ride is about 15 minutes away in bloomington, and then it's another half hour on the train and 5 minutes to walk from government plaza station to his building.  the bus drops him right across the street from his building.

the ease of getting into town using public transit has me concentrating my work search in minneapolis. traffic can get so horrendous during rush hour in the 'burbs that i'm not looking at anything beyond the immediately neighboring towns really, although that might have to change if i don't start getting callbacks soon.

I commute via public transportation and it takes me about 35 minutes to get to work.  About a three minute walk to the bus, ride the bus downtown a bit, switch to a crosstown bus that brings me a block from work.  I could also skip the crosstown bus and walk if I feel like it.

I do!  I am on an express train - well two, really.  The subway stop is less than 500 feet from our front door, and then I have a two avenue block walk when I get off in midtown.  Door to door, its just over 30 minutes.  I'm very happy with it :)

I take public transportation to work and it takes me about 40 minutes on a good day. My DH drives me to the train station and the I have about a 5 minute walk to my office once I get to the downtown core.

I wish our company gave us free transit passes. I spend $90 dollars a month on a bus pass. And it is constantly being increased.

I used to only have a 15 minute max commute. It was amazing. Then I met DH and I moved in with him. My only complaint about our new  house is the commute. I wish I could work somewhere closer to home. I feel like 2 hours of my day are wasted on me sitting on my butt unable to do anything productive.

I take public transportation, and it's usually ~45 minutes including walking to and from the train station. If I go at an off time it can be as little as 35 minutes, and if the T is off schedule or has delays, it has taken me over an hour. But I do agree it's less stressful than sitting in traffic, because I can read, do a crossword puzzle, or sit on weddingbee on my phone!

I drive because there is absolutely no other option, there is no train, subway, bus or anything. It takes me 30mins to get to work - 15 minutes to get to the freeway, 10 minutes on the freeway and 5 mintues from there to my office. I would way rather take transit if I could, but at least the traffic isn't a problem really, just on long weekends. But between FI and Myself we spend almost $500-$600 a month on two cars between insurance and gas, yeah it sucks.

I take the train to work. The monthly pass is $165, and my company pays $110, so I end up paying $55/month. The train ride is about 35-40 minutes. Door to door, my commute is 55 minutes. The train is pretty relaxing though, so I can't really complain.

I take the train, and it's about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to work.  That includes a fifteen-minute-long car drive to the station (I carpool with FI since it's right next to his place of work), about forty-five minutes on the train, and then fifteen minutes to walk from the station to my work.  It only takes about forty-five minutes for me to drive (unless there was an accident, in which case it could take up to two hours).

That being said, I used to spend about $60 per week to drive to and from work every day, and I was constantly stressed by the traffic.  Now I spend $65 per month, and I get to spend the whole commute reading.  So much better.

I take public transit and love it.  I live inside Philly but in a residential neighborhood and I'm about 1 1/4 miles from my office.  I share a car with my husband who works in South Jersey, so he takes the car for work each morning.  I walk to the end of my block, about 100 yards, to the bus stop.  I generally wait about 5 minutes or less for a bus but have waited as much as 10 if it's trash day or something.  The bus ride is about 10 minutes and I walk 2 blocks to the office (about 5 minutes).  The whole thing is usually about 20 minutes.

On the way home though, I will often walk which takes me about 30 min at a liesurely pace or maybe 25 if I push it.

My husband does a "reverse commute" by car about 15 miles away and it's also pretty pleasant, he is there in around 20 minutes as well.

Short commute time is high on our priority list when it comes to living arrangements.

ETA: I pay about $80 for a monthly pass, but the money comes out pre-tax from my check.

I take the bus every day and it takes me around 45min to and from work. I take 2 buses and it's the express ones, I love those because they don't stop at EVERY stop like the regular route ones lol.

I commute from NJ to NYC every day. Door to door it's about 2 hours. Although, I am starting a new job in a few weeks so that might go up by a few minutes since I'll have to take the subway once I get to NYC. Right now, I walk about 20 minutes to my office.

My typical commute usually goes something like this:

5 min: Drive to bus stop
    15 min: Wait for bus
    80 min: Bus ride
    20 min: Walk to office

When I took a commuter rail it was 1 1/2- 2 hours door-to-door IF the train was running on time which is almost never was. I liked being able to listen to music, read and sleep on the train but I prefer getting home at a normal hour like I do now...and not having to leave my house at 6 to be at for .

I take the bus most days. It is a 3 minute walk from our front door, and the ride takes 35-45 minutes. I love being able to read, catch up on email, or just relax for a bit before getting into downtown. Downtown has a free trolley system which connects me to basically anywhere I need to go once I hit downtown.

Our city briefly discussed implementing a light rail system but talks on that have stalled. I would LOVE that option if it ever materializes.

I drive from my apartment to the train station which is 2 miles and take the train into downtown which takes 20 minutes. Total commute is under 30 minutes each way and no traffic since its the train. Pretty easy commute!

I can walk or bus to Metro, the train goes right to my office. It depends on many factors, one of which is "how much does Metro hate me today?", but a good day takes me 35 minutes. A bad day can be over an hour.

DC commuting/traffic for ya: I live about 5 miles from my office. Around here a 35-minute commute downtown is a wonder.

Our commutes suck! I take public transport for about 45 minutes each way. Most of the time I get a seat, but if I don't, that means it's super crowed and it just puts you in a bad mood. The metro is expensive during rush hour, though, and my firm offers no help. I spend over $200 on public transport a month. Then, there's my darling soon to be husband. His commute is about an hour to hours depending on traffic, and he drives and hates it. Gas is about $60 a week.

    Wow, that depresses me.

I usually bike to school/work. I can do it in under 30 minutes there, and 22 minutes back if I hustle my buns. But if I have to carry a lot of books or can't be sweaty (professionalism ftw) or am lazy, I take the bus and it takes about 35-40 minutes.

I actually love my commute! It's an hour each way, but I love to read... It makes the commute go by so fast. I have a 3 minute walk to the commuter train which is a 40 minute ride. Then I switch to the subway for a 20 minute ride. The best part is the subway entrance/exit is INSIDE my building so I am only outside for the 3 minute walk to the station from my apartment. I appreciate it so much when it's pouring or snowing. :D

@Ms. Gremmlin: I spend over $200 a month too. :-\ That's really the only sucky part.

@yrret107: I'm from Seattle too! I live 2 blocks away from work so my walking "commute" is about 3 minutes.

before that, I used to walk to work for about 6 years. it was from capitol hill to downtown every day -  2.5 miles each way. I loved that walk so much, I would choose it over the bus even on rainy days! walking was actually faster than the bus in that part of town.

before that, I used to bus commute. I do have to say that some routes were better than others.  have you ever taken the 358 northbound on aurora at night? scary.

I am also a DC area commuter who uses the metro. I used to drive in from Southern Maryland but gas and park was out of control. I started using metro and that is still a pain. It takes me at least 30 minutes to get to metro then 30 on the train each way. And that is about $60/ wk for metro and about $30/ wk in gas. My company offers $50 a month plus any additional tax free which I really need to take advantage of. I would take the bus but my commute would be so much longer.

@Genuine513: I used to work at a place where driving was the only option, but that was only because it was out of town and if I took the bus, it would have added too much time. if I drove, it would be 30 minutes. if I took the bus, it would probably be 1.5 hours and at least two buses!

but yea, I prefer to live close to where I work. the only way I would take a job that was a long commute away is if it were the most amazing job ever.

I walk and it takes me about 5 min! If I look out my window and lean to the left a little I can see my shop :)

I do have to drive a lot though to different vendor shops and sights but its never too terribly far. I will say that I feel so blessed to be able to walk daily. I've taken the bus once before in my life and I couldn't get over how long it took. I can see the benefits but I would have a difficult time getting used to it.

@.twist.: My company tries to promote public transportation because it's better for the environment plus, if more people take bus or train, it means less people are driving to work.  Parking can be a pain and is expensive for the company.

@janie-janie: Yeah, my commute is down to south king county, since I live in Renton. I don't usually mine the 45 min commute since I used to live in Philadelphia where my commute was about the same. Going from a 45 min commute to another city with a 45 min commute isn't that bad. I have no idea what it feels like to have anything less than a 45 min commute. haha

Well I work in an industrial area, so there is no homes near our office and no public transportation. So I still have to drive even if I only lived 10 minutes away but I like the area that I live in so I don't mind the extra few minutes to drive.

two trains for this girl, and it takes me 1 hour to get to work from home... It would take just as long if I drove (traffic in Boston is brutal!)...  The kicker?  Home is eight miles from work....

the cost of parking at work though is $200/month, and it costs $140 a month to park at the train.... I guess if you add in gas money and frustration, its worth it.....

@yrret107: That's amazing that your company gives you free bus passes!

My commute is about 20-25 minutes in the car and 50 minutes by train. So I'll hop in the car...drive to the train and take the train into work. So a total of about an hour and 15 minutes. Of course if my train is late (which is often) it can take longer than that.

I think that many companies in Seattle offer cheap or free bus passes, even small businesses. I wouldn't be surprised if our government gave incentives to companies to do so. it's probably a big tax writeoff or something. our town is very environmentally friendly, and the traffic is pretty bad so it's in everyone's best interest.

Yeah I hear ya. I don't drive in the city because I just don't trust those crazy cabs out there ( I work in Manhattan) so i take public transportation from LI; have to buy a monthly pass which is $230.

The train takes me 40 minutes and then from the train station I walk about 35 minutes (depending on how late I am then i try to walk fast).

    So over an hour.

    Sucks.

I drive about an hour to work each day and I drive a Hyundai Tucson.  I'm filling up 3 times a week at $65-$70 a pop.  I'm waiting to hear back whether or not I got a job in Sydney.  If I did, I'd start taking the train with my fiance and it'll take me about 1.5 hours to get to work and the ticket will be about $220 a month.  I know lots of people on here have said that $200/month for a train ticket is a lot, but compared to what I'm spending on gas, I'm excited to be saving so much!
