When I come home from work or being out I always take my jewelry off. In fact, I can tell how comfortable I am at someone else's house by my desire to take off the jewelry. I knew I was getting to be very comfortable being at FI's place when I wanted to take my watch and my earrings off after coming over.
I've had my e-ring for a whole day and a half (woo-hoo). Yesterday, after coming home from work, I took all my jewelry off and was left confused as to what to do with the e-ring. Do I keep it on or take it off? I left it on until the night and took it off before going to bed. I am not sure what I am supposed to do. It's not that I am not used to wearing jewlery at all, but I am not used to doing it at my home.
So, do you take your e-ring off or not? And why?
I take it off to shower, do dishes, and when I'm cooking with raw meat. Other than that it stays on.
I keep it on all the time. I only take it off to clean it. I know that is kinda bad for the ring itself, but wearing the ring that my FI bought me just means the world to me.
I think I'm weird because I actually have mine off more than on, LOL. Out in public I always wear it, but pretty much as soon as I walk in the door it comes off. I'm usually doing stuff I just don't want to wear it for - laundry, dishes, showering, putting on makeup, cooking, cleaning, whatever. Plus, I like the free feeling my finger gets without it on. I'm not much of a jewelry person in general so at home it just feels nice not to wear it.
I also take it off when I drive sometimes because I get distracted by it sparkling in the windshield. I think, Oh pretty! and then realize I'm paying more attention to the ring than the road. Dumb!
I take my rings off quiet often whenever there are liquids involved (dishes, washing hands, lotion, bathing, etc.) and when I cook messy things where I have to get down and dirty (think meatloaf). I also do not wear them to bed because my arms have a tendency to go places.
I take mine off to do dishes or if Im doing a lot of house cleaning. Thats about it. However I usually do dishes almost every day so I will take it off and then leave it off for the rest of the night. Everyone is different though - do whatever you are comfortable with!
@ohheavenlyday: That's exactly how I feel. I like not to wear jewelry at home. So, I was confused as to what to do with the e-ring... Still confused :)
I take mine off to sleep, shower and when I'm working with harsh chemicals (like when I'm cleaning the bathroom). I've taken it off if I have to really knead bread dough or form meatballs or stuff like that where I've got my hands all in the food because I don't want to get food bits caught in my ring.
I take off my rings when I clean things, cook or do other tasks I use my hands for that I feel might dirty or damage them. I take off all my jewelry before bed and I only put it on again after I shower the next morning.
I wear mine all the time! As soon as I get up, I put my ring on. I love the feeling of wearing it. It makes me feel pretty. haha. Anyways, I wear her pretty much do to everything besides, working with dough, or bleach or any other harsh chemical. I leave her on to do dhishes, but take her off when I shower. I also take her off right before bed. Otherwise she does what I does.
I don't wear it around the house and since i work from home, that's pretty much all day during the week. Often if I'm leaving in a hurry to just run down the street to grab take out, then i won't remember to put it on. I also don't wear it to the gym or walk the dog. I've actually knocked the diamond loose by wrapping the dogs leash around my hand!
It definitely spends more time off than on. At first I wore it a lot but once i realized that things like walking the dog and going to the gym were damaging the ring, i started to wear it less.
I agree with do whatever makes you comfortable!
If my hands are going to be getting wet or dirty. Sometimes I have to take it off to sleep because my hands get swollen (lovely auto-immune disease) and it gets painful to keep it on but aside from those, I usually keep it on.
After eight years, going on nine, of wearing it, I've finally started taking it off other than to take a shower. I now take it off and sometimes (*gasp!*) leave it off during the day if I'm not going anywhere.
I think it just gets easier the longer you've been together and been wearing it. I used to abhor taking it off for ANY reason, but now that we're living together and finally planning a wedding for next year, it's been a lot easier and I don't feel guilty for not wearing it.
I take mine off to cook, clean, shower, and to sleep...so basically when I get home from work :)
In reality, I think that my e-ring (and wedding band) are off more than they are on! I only wear them if I am leaving the house for something. Otherwise, they are off and in their box. I am convinced that if I were to keep them on I would knock a stone out or scratch something!
My ring is on at all times unless I’m in the shower, cleaning or cooking something that gets my hands all icky. I know it sounds cliché but if I don’t have it on, my hand feels naked.
I take mine off for sleeping, showering, hand washing, cleaning....pretty much the usuals. I have a very low setting so it doesn't usually get in the way too often. I was warned by my jeweler that one of the most common ways to do major damage to a diamond is by whacking it while taking laundry out of a top-loading washer (something about the angle).
I take my ring off as soon as I change out of work clothes (during the week anyway.) I wear it whenever I leave the house, but when I'm home and it's just me and the FI I don't wear it. I'm either cooking, cleaning, playing with the puppy, workign out, ect. so I don't feel the need to wear it. I do wear it whenever we go out though, I feel weird if I leave the house and it's not on my finger.
I take it off for cleaning, most cooking, sometimes when I work out, and I always take it off to sleep. Mine has some sharp edges and I'm worried I would scratch FI or myself in my sleep. I also try to remember to take it off before I do anything with my horse.
I take my ring off right before bed, if I'm taking a shower, working with messy foods, or putting any products in my hair. Other than that, it stays on all the time. As soon as I get out of the shower in the morning, I put it on, and it stays on until it's time for bed.
I take mine off pretty much the second I get home when I change into pajamas (I always wear pajamas at home) and don't put it back on until I leave to go out. And sometimes not even then. About half the time I don't even wear it to work. I have a computer job, and keyboards don't care if you're engaged. But if I went out to dinner or out on the weekend without it I would feel sad for have forgotten it, lol. I find jewelry very uncomfortable, though.
I wear mine most of the day. I don't sleep in it because I tend to get puffy at night and it gets tight then. I do take it off when I put on lotion or take a shower.
I take it off before I shower, do dishes, work out, put on hair products or makeup. I had to give it up completely today so FI could send it out for resizing, engraving, and tightening a couple loose stones, and I feel so naked at work without it!
@Potatoes: I have the same problem! But I still sleep with mine on and then take it off when I wake up with my hand feeling like it's about to fall off. I'm scared I'll forget to put it back on.
But I wear mine all the time. It's only off when I do dishes (rare occasion), wash my hands, put on make-up, take a shower, and when I'm cooking with stuff I have to mix by hand (also on rare occasion).
I take it off to sleep, shower, do dishes and to do anything messy with food. Also when I'm using chemicals like cleaning products. I haven't encountered this yet but I would also take it off when swimming and possibly at the gym.
I take mine off to do dishes and clean or to shower, but it always goes back on right after. I take the rest of my jewellery off when I get home.
I must be weird, I never wear my rings when I'm in the house. I'm just not a jewelry person, and my fingers feel more comfortable without them on. Don't get me wrong, I love both rings but it's just a matter of comfort. I never wore a lot of jewelry before getting married, and am still that way. Out in public, I usually just wear my wedding band, if it's a dress-up occasion, then I'll wear both e-ring and wedding band.
I take mine off to work out (more like lifting, not running), to cook, and (sometimes--bad ella, it should be all the time) to do dishes.
That's pretty much all.
I take mine off to sleep, shower, clean and when i lift weights (which is almost daily).
I only take mine off to shower, if I'm using harsh cleaning chemicals or making messy food. Other than that, it stays on my finger. It's very low profile, so it doesn't really get banged around easily.
I take mine off as soon as I get home, but I've gotten into the habit that I *almost always remember to wear it outside of the house.
I take mine off mostly just to shower and sleep. I'd scratch up my face if I kept it on while sleeping! Oh and cleaning too...I don't want any gunk getting in my ring!
But mostly my other jewelry, I take off when I get home. Especially if I have a chunky necklace or bracelet on. I'm ready to be comfy! My rings feel like a part of me, so I wear them most of the time.
I do take it off to cook, clean, wash dishes, shower, sleep, and since I really love doing artsy stuff, erm...to do that. I also might take it off when in rehearsal - I am an actress so sometimes I have (and since I am VERY recently engaged (like a month) and I am in a movement-oriented show right now) physically engaging shows like dance or movement, I'll take it off then. (Don't want anything to happen - I'm SUPER protective of it, and just thinking of doing cartwheels or handstands with it scares me). But, I'll mostly leave it on when I'm hanging out after work at home.
Does anyone else take it off to sleep, or what if you are wearing gloves in the winter?
(great question!)
@Cash000: Totally agree! (I feel pretty too!!) :D
i take mine off only to shower, clean or work out. and putting on lotion - other than that i always wear it :)
I take mine off at night and then I don't put it on again until I've showered and gotten dressed. If I'm doing dishes, I'll leave it on top of the TV in the living room so it's as far away from drains as I can get it :).
OP: My mom sounds a lot like you. She takes hers off when she gets home and puts them on right before she leaves the house again. It's completely up to you and what you're comfortable with. There's not really a 'right' or 'wrong' (except taking it off in bars to flirt with people or something horrible :)).
I pretty much take mine off when I am home as well. I don't wear it to clean, do dishes, shower, or sleep. I also always take it off to exercise. I am training for a marathon relay right now, and if I run with it on my finger swells. Also, when I life weights, I feel like the corrugated metals hand grips scratch the gold.
i'm not a ring person so i usually don't wear it unless i'm going out. i think once i get my band though, i'll probably wear the band all the time and wear the e ring for special occasions.
As much as I love wearing my e-ring and band, I take them off as soon as I get home from work. They both come off with my earrings, watch, and any other jewelry. Then, I slip into something more comfortable (like sweats or my pj's). I take them off when cooking, bathing, or doing anything that might dirty them. I always wear them if I'm going out...whether it's during the week or weekend!
I wear mine all the time (including to sleep) EXCEPT:
(1) Showering
(2) While putting on lotion
(3) While doing dishes or any cleaning with abrasive cleaners
(4) While doing any working out that involves gripping things (this last one was INSISTED ON by my jeweler who said that lifting/gripping weights with the ring on will slowly bend it out of shape and potentially work the diamonds out of their holds).
That's it.
