I do...When you first start, I think they recommend that you use the towel provided to cover up your lady bits...lol that don't see the sun after two minutes or so. Then over time you gradually build up to being fully naked.
Go very gradual at first for those areas!! Once you build up a tan you will be fine!
Yes. If you are super paper white like I am, try a stand up booth first for a really short time (like 2 minutes if it is a ten max booth). Stand ups don't burn me in the small of my back or the butt since you are further from the lamps. Also make sure to moisturize and use lotion with a bronzer for some instant gratification. After your first 2-3 times you can up your time in the booth and work up to the full exposure. I also used one of the "tramp stickers" on a not so visible spot, so I could keep track of my color changing.
yes'm... i hate lines! that's the beauty of tanning salons!
Yes!
Your butt has a lot of melanin and is the most common place to burn when it see's the "artificial" sun!
I agree with PP that the stand-up will burn you less your first time and that is because you are not lying directly on the bed where you are closer to the bulbs.
Ask the consultant and tell her it is your first time. She will recommend a good time length for you to tan!
If you do use a lay down bed, make sure to have a few little towels or something like mentioned earlier. After a few min. you need to cover your boobs and butt. Also, if you burn in the crease of your legs/pelvis it's REALLY painful! For one, the skin is really thing, and 2.... underwear and pants... ouch. So having towels to cover your face, boobs, but, and pelvis can be good until that area builds up. Usually that will build slower as unlike your face, arms, legs, they never see the light :-)
Make sure you use a VERY good lotion and moisturize the heck out of your skin after.
I do! I've only tanned a few times (a week here or there) and now for my wedding. I got a 3 month package. After the first week or two, the front of my hips and my chest were getting really dark, so I'd use either a towel or a long tube top to cover those spots. Now I alternate between covering up and not and it seems to be evening out a lot.
Mmmmmm tannning..... (due to my addiction, this is as much as I'm allowed to contribute to all tanning related posts...any more information would be detrimental to my recovery process).
I always wear a bikini style bottom, but nothing on top and cover up with a towel as needed. Make sure you start out slow! There is nothing worse that sunburn and peeling skin... ugh
When I was in high school I would go tanning and when I did I was always naked. Please do your research about tanning beds though. They are so so bad for you. I will never put myself in one of them ever again.
If your face burns easily I would cover it with a towel for part of the time you are in the bed. To me, nothing is worse than getting your face burnt. I always cover up my face for about half the time I'm in the bed because of course tanning can really age your skin and its obviously more apparent on your face.
Since it is your first time, you'll be sensitive to tanning.
I tend to burn quite easily, so I usually go tanning a few times before I expect to be out in the sun! I usually start at 5 minutes (in a 15 min max bed), then go to 8 mins for the next two or three times, then to 10-12 until I feel comfortable staying in the entire time. However, I always cover up my face after 5-7 minutes regardless! In addition, as many bees have said, it's a good idea to cover your bottom and chest. They can burn really easily and it hurts when they do! Oh, and get a towel for under your heels too. In a lay down bed, they can get a little burnt as well and then can get dry.
What we do for a nice golden glow...
I did when I tanned, but now I won't go near a booth. I just use tanning lotion now
I agree with the advice to start out with only a few minutes. When I first started I went for 2 or 3 minutes and did that for a couple of times and then worked my way up adding a few minutes at a time. Also, when you're first starting don't go every day. Give yourself a day inbetween each tanning session. I have always tanned naked and I've never covered up with a towel and haven't had any problems with burning. DO wear the goggles though, just closing your eyes isn't good enough to protect them. And...have someone you really trust to be honest with you to tell you when you need to take a few days off to avoid getting the super fake/orange look.
I used to tan and I did go naked. I also covered my face with a towel.
However I will never get into a tanning bed ever again. I have had 2 friends have aggressive melanoma's... Scary skin cancer at 25?!?! They both went to the tanning salon religiously.
Spray tanning is another option you may want to look into.
Yep! It is the best way to avoid lines for sure. I always use the stand up ones too so I don't get any lines from laying in the beds. I usually only tan for vacations and special occassions, so I try to avoid the lines as much as possible.
Usually the first time I go again those areas might be a little pink and itchy, but by the second time it is fine. Just start out low... I start at like 5 min and just work my way up gradually.
When I went I did it naked but I have very fair skin and for the first 2 weeks I only could go in for 4 min's a day then up to 7 for the next week. But I never went above 10 min at a time I would still burn with a base tan on but me I have reddish hair and freckles so just found out whats good for you.
awww man, do you have to go to a tanning booth? They are cancer in a box. I've had small skin cancers twice now. I wouldn't want anyone to go through the removal process of those. Please reconsider and use tanning sprays or lotions instead.
I always tan naked but go easy - I generally burn on my butt or between my boobs the first time or too until I build up a base. But there's nothing like a flawless all over tan. Can't wait to hit it again tomorrow!
@SweetAdelineXO- haha me too! I get a little burnt but that gives my skin a good base too! It sucks when you take a hot shower and your butt is on fire lol
I always tan naked, even when I first started. I was very very fair when I started, but after I built up a tan my skin got a little better. I only use to go in the winter, it's been 2 years since I've been but I want to start to build up a tan for the wedding. I use a level 4 bed for 10 mins now.
Ive been tanning a few times and a couple times I wore a thong and then a couple times I was naked but put a towel underneath. I liked wearing a thong though because it felt less weird!
Yep...it's so important to start out really low as far as minutes go. I even start out lower than what the salon recommends for me. They will usually suggest 6-7 minutes and I will tell them 4 or 5. I gradually move up one minute at a time, and I have never had a burn in any sensitive places, or anywhere really.
I tan with underpants on. Partially just cause I feel less dirty and partially because I tanned in a thong once and OUCH... my poor butt cheeks!!!!!
I always used to tan naked... Im really white otherwise I dont any more I've already had a spot removed when I was just 20 years old!! :( From tanning as a teenager!

Okay people, I'm hitting the tanning beds for the first time ever, and I have a silly question...do you tan naked? It seems like the most logical way to avoid lines, but I'm a little worried about getting burned in those places that have never seen the sun before....
I know there are a lot of experienced tanners on this forum so I'm hoping I can get some advice!
