Just wondering, do you tip at Starbucks if you are just getting a coffee? I get a coffee every morning, but I never tip. I always feel bad with the tip jar staring me in the face.
I don't tip at Starbucks unless I'm paying with cash and happen to throw in whatever coins I get as change.
Nope. I don't tip the grocery bagger or the person who makes me my fast food, so why would I tip at Starbucks?
ETA: Plus no one tips me when I go out of my way to help someone in my office.
I don't tip. You know what tip jars mean? The money goes to the corporation, not the person who actually helped you. At least in my experience. Unless it's a situation where you're giving money directly to that person, it doesn't go to them.
I worked at Culver's also, and a couple times people tried to tip me a couple dollars because the servers bring out food and often times pick up the garbage as well. If we got any tips we were required to put it in the jar, which went to the franchise, not us.
ETA: My first sentence means I don't tip at places like Starbucks anyway... obviously I tip at restaurants and taxis and such.
Nope. I mostly go to Dunkin Donuts though. They also have a tip jar. They're only making coffee or taking orders - no offense to anyone who works in these sort of establishments.
I tip anywhere I get coffee. But the place I go in my town always gets my coffee exacly right and never screws up my order. That's worth an extra buck to me.
@galloway111: I have a friend that worked at starbucks and she said that the workers split the tip jar. I wonder if it all got split between the workers or if a % of it went to the corporation...?
I dont usually tip @ starbucks either... im on the same page as coffeegal85!
I'd rather eat dirt. There's a girl I know who works at Starbucks and is always posting statuses on facebook about how we all need to tip at Starbucks and we're horrible people if we don't. Here's the deal: if you don't tip me when you come through my drive through, I'm not going to tip you when I go through yours.
@galloway111: Starbucks is a little different. The tips actually do go directly to the employees ONLY, and they're dividied up so all employees have an equal chance at earning tips, regardless of the shift.
I always tip at Starbucks because I used to work there, and I know how nice it is to get a couple extra bucks at the end of the week. I also tip baggers at grocery stores and other labor jobs, unless they're not allowed to take tips.
Normally I'm a little nuts about tipping but I can see why people don't tip the coffee people. I just personally do. It's a little no big deal thing that guarantees me awesome service every single morning I'm in a hurry.
@Mrs. Spring: Interesting. I guess Starbucks must be different but everywhere else I know of doesn't allow employees to keep it. Also, having worked in retail, I've never heard of a retail location that allows anyone, even baggers, to accept tips.
@KatyElle: To me, by that logic, shouldn't you tip at all fast food locations too? And at stores when an employee helps you find something and then rings it up at the cash register? I guess I see it as, I get paid for my job already. Restaurants are different since waitresses only make about $2 per hour anyway, tips are expected.
@KatyElle: Is the place you go to personally owned? I think I'd be more willing to tip at those sort of places.
@galloway111: Maybe, but it's not really a logic thing. I've just always done it. There are very few places I visit on a daily basis that never get my orders wrong, and I'm usually a self checkout girl too. It's just a little thing I like to do, but I certainly don't expect others to.
I tip when I am paying with cash and have cash or change leftover. Now that we're using the cash method that's more often!
@MissPumpkinPie: Yup, it's just a little cafe on the corner owned by a nice couple from Italy. The baked goods are fresh daily.
We almost always pay with a debit card so no, we don't tip. If I happen to have a buck floating around in my purse I'll throw it in if the barista is particularly helpful which none of them ever really seem to be. I don't know if it's just the Starbucks we frequent but pretty much everyone who works the morning shift are pretty cranky.
I don't tip at Starubucks, but I do tip at a non-chain local coffee shop that I go to a lot. The people there are very friendly, will bring your coffee to your table if they see where you're sitting, and I think it's better prices than Starbucks so I'm willing to throw in a tip-- I usually leave a dollar bill if I have one, or whatever change I have.
I tipped once, when I received the best dang salted caramel hot chocolate ever. The guy put it in a bigger cup to accomodate my "extra whip, extra caramel" wishes and he loaded that sucker up. It was last year and I still remember the thing, so he deserved the dollar I threw in the tip jar.
Only if I pay in cash, and then I just dump whatever coins they give me into the box. It's honestly more because I hate carrying change around though, not because I feel obligated. I don't tip on my card for coffee though.
FYI--Starbucks has buy one get one on all of their winter drinks today!!! :) I hope it's in all areas!
I used to always tip when I paid cash, but now I use my Starbucks gold card so I usually forget to. But since I know that they tipshare among the whole staff, I just throw $5-$10 in every so often. That said, the Starbucks I visit has exceptional, friendly staff who do a great job, and deserve tips. I don't just tip blindly.
Nope and never will. I honestly don't get the tipping thing at a coffee shop such as Starbucks. Restaurants, of course, but not Starbucks. If you tip there, then shouldn't you tip at fast food restaurants, too? I just don't get it!
I don't usually tip at starbucks, but would throw in some change when using cash. I am more likely to tip at independent coffee shops.
@KatyElle: I think it's different if it's a locally owned place and not many employees. In that case I would tip too, but Starbucks has eliminated all the non-chain coffee shops anywhere near here.
@galloway111: I worked at a Cold Stone for a summer and we (the employees serving ice cream) got 100% of our tips. At the end of every shift, the tip jar was emptied and split amoung everyone working.
Nope, I think the concept is a little silly. Unless part of your income is based on tips I don't pay more than the listed price if you're not carrying a cardboard sign.
@galloway111: One of my local grocery stores allows baggers to accept tips; one doesn't. My husband was allowed to accept tips when he worked as a teenager at the Air Force BX, though.
A lot of large chains don't allow tipping, but my personal feelings on it are that I've lived on a minimum wage job before, and those tips really came in handy. So if someone is doing a job for me at minimum wage (baggers, fast food workers, etc...) I'll usually ask if they can accept tips. I make a lot more than minimum wage now, lol, so I really don't need tips at my job.
@Mrs.KMM: Interesting. We don't have a Cold Stone in town but based on my past jobs and friends' past jobs, I can't think of anywhere like that that allows employees to get the tips.
@kala_way: I have to agree.I don't get tipped for retail work, and I make the same as the person making the coffee. Do they work harder than I do? I doubt it, the work level is pretty consistent in retail and food. I tip if I know the person's wage is based on tips.
@Mrs. Spring: Out of curiosity, if a retail worker helped you locate an item in the store or checked the back room and got you something that wasn't on the shelf, would you tip them? I guess the concept of tipping like this is odd to me, since a lot of jobs make minimum wage but no one would think to tip them.
@Mrs.KMM: same here! Not usually. Only if I get change back form a cash transaction. I just throw in my coins.
I don't go to starbucks often. I would say that I tip some of the time. It usually has to do with whether or not I pay with cash since I usually drop my change in there.
If they are really nice or working hard, I don't mind giving them a little tip.
I normally don't tip at coffee stands because I use my CC, and they normally don't give me an option to write a tip in on the receipt. But, sometimes I do tip. If they are really nice (but not overly), or working hard, busy, etc, then I will. I used to work at a coffee shop, and I lived off my tips. My hourly wage wasn't enough, so I relied on tips. That is one reason why I feel bad not tipping.
Maybe it's just because I was a tipped employee for many years, I always tip if it's an option in a show of solidarity lol
I will tip at the small family-owned hole in the wall type coffee places where you can sit down and they'll bring your order out to you. But the big chains? Not so much.
@PitBulLover: Same here, although now that I always use my "gold card" I rarely deal with cash so I voted no. It has been a while since I last paid with actual cash or change.
I usually tip a dollar, plus whatever coin change is left over from the purchase. I suppose I never really thought about the difference between that and a fast food order. Do the baristas at Starbucks make min. wage or just what exactly?
For baggers, I hardly ever tip, mostly because a lot of stores don't allow them to accept tips. However, I've recently changed stores (from Walmart or Food Lion to Kroger) a couple of weeks ago. I had a very nice young man empty my cart, load it on the conveyer belt, and then bag and re-load back into my cart. I tipped him $5 because I felt he went above and beyond the just the typical tossing it in a bag and throwing it in my cart.
And fwiw, I've waitressed my ass off, so tipping is usually a hot-button for me.
ETA: In my area the Starbucks in Targets no longer have a tip jar, but the freestanding ones and ones in malls/bookstores still have one. And in most places (again, in my area) if there is a tip jar, the employees split them.
@galloway111: I know you asked Spring, but I'll throw in my theory. Maybe because in typical retail jobs, employees (sometimes) have the potential for sales bonuses? Thus, making tipping moot? Versus most food and beverage jobs usually have no such sales bonuses. Idk, just my two cents......
the debit/credit card has ruined tipping in most "fast food" or quick order establishments. There is not option for tip at dunkin donuts or star bucks that I know of, so you basically need to have cash!
I mainly use cash, so I do tip at coffee places, it may not be much but its something.
@Wonderwoman217: Baristas have to make minimum wage as far as I know. Fast food and retail as well. Tips aren't expected there as they are for waitresses. I guess this is a hot topic for me because people are saying they tip someone who makes their coffee in a couple minutes, but I've made complicated ice cream orders getting paid $5.90 an hour and no one would've dreamed of tipping me. Not that they don't work hard, but I think all these types of positions require equal work. Majorly above and beyond I could understand, but doing their job? It seems unfair to tip some people for doing their job and not others who make the same or even less. Just my opinion though, obviously I think it's really nice of you all to tip people. But now I'm feeling shafted, lol.
ETA: Oh, and to the second post, I think I mentioned I worked at Sears... minimum wage forever, corporate policy. Workers who'd been there 10 years still make minimum wage. No chance of any bonus, even for the commissioned workers.
At Walmart we don't have sale bonuses either. Maybe some stores do but again based on my experience and the experiences of people I know, most retail stores don't give bonuses to anyone but the managers.
