Do you tip the band?

posted 5 months ago in Beehive

Hi Ladies

A 6 piece wedding band will be playing during our reception. Are we supposed to tip the band at the end of the reception? If so, how much?

 Thanks!

It depends how long they're playing for and how much you're paying them, but as a musician, I'd say that for a full reception, a tip of $50 per person would be much appreciated and appropriate.

Here's what it says on The Knot: "Musicians (ceremony and reception): Whether an organist or string quartet is accompanying you down the aisle, if you're cutting a rug to a 12-piece swing band or a single DJ, tipping the musicians is completely optional. If you do decide to "show them the money," calculate $20 to $25 for each member." taken from this article: http://www.theknot.com/ch_article.html?Object=AI980914212902. But since GorgesViola is a musician, that may be the going rate these days

I'm doing $20 per person in a small red envelope.  There are 8 band members, so along with their meal, it all adds up.
