My friend and i had horrible food and service at this one resturant. The manager just called us to say to come in for 2 free appatizers on him. Do we still tip if our meal is free? My friend says she wont.

I always, always, always tip! I have friends who are waiters and so I'm very sympathetic to what they go through, and I know it's an incredibly difficult job.

Yes! The waiter is still giving you their time, and they rarely make minimum wage.

Unless the service is once again horrid (and I mean, really, REALLY bad) than yes. I suggest 15% of what your meal is worth.

Yes, you should tip even if it's free. Same goes for free drinks, etc. Honestly, I tip more if i'm getting something free, not less.

Yes.  While the food is free, the waiter still has to give you service and if you don't tip, they aren't getting paid anything for that service.

i tip 10% when service is bad.  if it's free appetizers for previous bad service i'd tip 15% of what it would have cost if i was paying....unless service is bad again.

I don't know if it's the same at independent restaurants, but at all the chains I ever worked at, the manager is not allowed to receive tips, so if he receives one then he will give it to a tipped employee.
But in every other situation, PLEASE tip! Just because you get a free meal, or have a coupon for something doesn't mean the server isn't doing the equivalent amount of work--she IS.

Yes, I still tip even if I have a comped meal and I tip on what the actual amount would have been if I had a coupon.  I am sorry your original service was bad, but your new server should not be punished for it.

No. Bad service does not deserve any tip. Otherwise it gives them your approval to do it to other people. Definitely talk to the manager though. If the manager is the one who serves you, there probably isn't any higher up individual onsite. In which case, don't go back.

YES, you should tip if the service you receive when you return to the restaurant is good or at least adequate.  It is unlikely that you will have the same waitor/waitress you had before and the bad service you received on your initial visit is not the fault of the server who you get on the second go-round.  Not tipping the second server for the bad service you recieved by the first server makes no sense.  I don't know what the average base pay is for servfers in CA, but here in GA it's $2.13, which I believe is the National Average.... so, that's just some food for thought.   Hopefully, since you received poor service on your first visit, you reflected that in your tip (or lack thereof) to THAT waitor/waitress.... If you return, get a different server, and get descent service it would be rude, and quite frankly, low class if you didn't tip on your second trip given that your appetizers will be free.

Selene--I think you misunderstood the question. OP and her friend were coming back in for a second time, for just their free appetizers, and were wondering, if service is fine, if they should tip on their free apps.

Yes! Please always tip! If the service is awful, leave about 8-10% and tell the manager. A couple of years ago when I was serving, I was only paid half of minimum wage and legally had to claim at least 8% of my sales. So not tipping actually costs the server money. Technically, the restaurant is supposed to pay the server more if they don't make enough in tips and hourly pay to make minimum wage, but that rarely actually happens.

YES YES YES!!!  Still tip when you go in!!  The server you get this time won't be the same one and you shouldn't punish him or her based on what some other crappy ass server did!!

This happened to me a couple of weeks ago....(I waitress 1xweek for extra wedding $$)  This couple came in and got $50 worth of food comped because they had such a shitty experience last time.  They purposely sat in my section because - not too toot my own horn - I'm more experienced than the other girls there and know how to work it!  They went on and on about how fabulous I was and how much better everything was this time around, blah blah blah...  I spent an hour focusing on them, getting things before they even asked...basically kissing their asses!!! And what did they leave me?!?! $0 - zilch, nada, nothing!!!!!  IT WASN'T MY FAULT FROM LAST TIME!!

Yay! I'm glad you tipped :) When I was a server sometimes I would get people with gift cards/comp cards/coupons that wouldn't tip :( I still worked just as hard for that table so it was always a total bummer. Glad you had a good experience the 2nd time around!

FILs are really stingy tippers and it upsets me when we go out with them, SO MUCH, because there's pretty much no way for me to slip something onto the table afterwards without them noticing. I spent four years as a server (and will probably end up doing it again at some point), and I can still feel the rage and frustration brought on by receiving a bad tip after working running, lifting, sweating, slipping, and maneuvering all while focusing on what needed to get done, just to please a table. Serving is such a demanding job, physically, emotionally, and mentally (at least it was at all the super-busy corporate sh!+holes I ever worked at). I don't think anyone gets it till they do it, and that's really too bad! I wish there was some mandate that everyone needed to serve for a month just to see what it's like, heh.

OP: I'm so glad you came back and got good service! It probably really delighted your server to see that not all people are clueless about what a server deserves in a situation where food is comped. Good karma will come back to you. :)

I started off as a hostess and worked my way up to server :) I was actually glad that I did too b/c it helped me get a feel for the way a restaurant works.

I think a lot of people start off as hosts! I got hired at 17 at Bob Evans as a server with no serving experience (though I had three years of customer service experience), but it was really a location thing. That one didn't get nearly as busy as their sister store right outside of Hersheypark, which I applied and interviewed at first. They were only considering hiring me as a host with the possibility of working up to server. I think the less 'fancy' a restaurant and the less busy they get, the more likely they are to hire you without experience. My next job, however, at an Olive Garden that is on a wait pretty much 24/7 (WORST JOB EVER NEVER WORK FOR DARDEN), had a policy of hiring no one without experience.

I was a waitress for 5 years and know how important tipping is, and as the other ladies have said...YES!  YES!  YES!  If you have good service the second time (which you have, yay!), I would recommend tipping at LEAST 15%.

That said, I have left a restaurant without tipping once.  My boyfriend and I went out to dinner with my sister and cousin, all four of us knowing that it was my treat.  Our server was excellent in getting refills, timely bringing out food, and extremely nice...to my boyfriend.  The girls and I sat through the entire dinner with empty glasses and our requests for anything were ignored.  Needless to say, not only was the service bad for myself and my family, but flirt with my boyfriend in front of me when I'm footing the bill?  No tip for you!

I don't get to share that story very often, so I laughed when I found the opportunity to here!  Also, my boyfriend was so oblivious to the flirting (as he always is...sigh...haha) that he was offended that I didn't leave a tip, because he got great service!
