So I like to stay abreast of the fashion happenings...but I also realize that not all trends are right for me. I am a street size 16/18 and I keep wanting to try a pair of skinny leg jeans (with flats or to tuck into boots). I just don't know if I should go there.... Will it be completely disproportionate to my "full figured" butt/hip/thigh region? Or, paired correctly with the right longer length top, will it look fashionable and effortless?
What do you ladies size 16 and up think? Do you wear skinny jeans? If so, how do you style them? All help and suggestions appreciated!
I'm usually about a size 8 and I personally stay away from "skinny jeans." I have a booty and large thighs, so I feel like that type of jean doesn't look right on my curvy bottom half...but that's mostly just a personal preference.
Every time I see a big girl in skinny jeans I die a little bit inside.
Honestly, I'm pretty petite and I don't like the way I look in skinny jeans. I'll only wear them with boots, just 'cause they're the easiest to tuck in. Beyond that I don't wear them. But I will say I've seen women of ALL SIZES who look hawt in skinny jeans! They're just not for me. :)
I just hate skinny jeans in general. I don't care who is wearing them and what size they are. All I can think of is little emo boys with eyeliner. And bum cracks. Every person who I see wears them..I also get the nice addition of seeing them bums...EWWW.
I personally don't like the way I look in skinny jeans if I wear them with flats or heels - my hips are big already, and it makes them look more so. However, I wear them tucked into all my boots because I hate the bunched-up knee look you get with any other type of jeans.
I wear a size 8 in pants and I hate the way I look in skinny jeans. I prefer a wide leg trouser to balance out my hips. However, I have seen them look totally fab. Have you seen the tv show Glee? The character Mercedes (she's the african american girl in the choir) is quite curvy and she has rocked some skinny jeans on the show. They look amazing on her. Wish they looked that good on me.
It depends on your proportions. It's not really the booty or the thighs that make skinny jeans look awful (personally I don't see the point of wearing them if you don't have SOME curves to show off) but the gut gets me. I have a gut so I am NOT trying to put that on display. I tend to go for trouser cut jeans personally. I have seen plus size girls rock the skinny jeans and look darn good in them...but they had the right proportions IMO to wear them. They are not for me though.
I said maybe... you can definitely find a nice cut but it takes some searching. But at the same time, I don't really think that skinny jeans are the only option
I'm a street size 8/10, and I wear skinny/straight jeans with boots or flats if I have the right top on. Usually something longer and flowy to cover the hip/butt region. I really like Old Navy's Diva straight-legged jeans. They're not as fitted on the bottom as skinny jeans, but are still really easily tucked into boots and look really cute with flats (and they're only $30 I believe).
I've seen so many women rock skinny jeans with boots, and not all of them were a size 6. Check out J. Hud:

I'm pretty thin and my bf makes fun of me and says I look like I have skinny chicken legs...so I definitely have to be careful not to get them to tight or to skinny ha I think they can be pulled off by bigger girls just not so tight is all.
I thought I'd never wear them. But after going to Chicago and seeing all the stylish ladies with their skinny jeans tucked into snowboots, I thought differently. I like the look where you wear the jeans with a long sweater or something to hide your stomach area. I would try that.
I'm a street size 8/10 with lots of butt and thighs. I own a pair and I love them. I wear them with little flats, tucked into my boots or with a pair of heels. I think their pretty versatile. I hated them for a long time and then found a pair really cheap (Like, $2) and decided to take the plunge.
I'm a street size 16/18 and I never thought to rock skinny jeans till I grabbed a pair at the store on accident. Mr. Holiday was in the dressing room when I thought i was putting on bootcuts...imagine my surprise! I got them on and was like no way.. and Mr. Holiday was like oH yeah we are buying those in every color.
Now I do rock skinny jeans and I've worn them with tunics, long tanktops and a blazer (my fave look) and since I just got my first pair of flat boots I've been rocking them ALL the time with my skinny jeans! Mr. Holiday's fave new look on me :)
@TPHoliday - I have a great pair of high, flat boots that I would love to pull over some jeans - but all my jeans are boot cut and there's just too much denim to cram in there! I would love to know where you found your good pair of skinny jeans! Please share! And I like the Blazer and Tunic top idea...
@Mitla: That's exactly what happened to me. I never thought I would wear a pair, then I went to the East Coast for a weekend and absolutely all the cute, stylish girls were wearing them. I felt totally out of fashion in my straight cut jeans!
It sounds like I just have to find the right pair that aren't too tight, but just fitted below the knee. Maybe I will take *Boston Bee's* advice and try a pair from Old Navy...
@MrsKtoBe - I found mine at PacSun...they're not too expensive and I really like them - they go perfectly with my boots!
I think that anyone can look good in them if they wear the right top. A long flowy top always looks awesome on anybody with skinny jeans...
OTHER- stay far away from skinny jeans! I'm sorry, I agree with some of the girls on here...skinny jeans are nasty and I personally gag everytime I see them, whether someone is wearing them or I see them for sale...just ick. Who even thought of making them. This world is in a fashion crisis. Just my opinion.
@MrsKtoBe I found mine at Torrid http://www.torrid.com. I LOVE torrid and they go a size 12 and up.
I also bought what they call denim leggings (pull on skinny jeans) and rock those all the time with the boots!
i just throw on some boots and a top that is a little looser and i totally rock em! or in the summertime i roll the bottoms up and wear with sandals. at first i felt a little funny (i <3 cheeseburgers and it shows, ha) but now i love em!
"Every time I see a big girl in skinny jeans I die a little bit inside." <- Awfully blunt. Especially considering the poster and most of the people who responded. Including me.
Big girls can pull off skinny jeans. PERIOD. =]
I am a "big girl", I have skinny jeans. I really like them. I also got mine from Torrid, TPHoliday. I agree w/ everyone else, great with flats or boots. I think tight tops and tight bottoms do not go. Mix and match! I usually wear them with an empire waisted top. It still shows off the hourglass, but not in an uncomfortable, tight-all-over way.
Also, cute heels make a statement, I'd say^
Did anyone else get to this page and then see an ad for "butt-lifting jeans" in the upper right corner?? Are they screening the text for ad content, or what!
I think they're totally hit and miss depending on the person.
I probably could get away with them (i'm the first to admit i have no hips and no butt, i'm built like a freakin' carrot) but I HATE the way they look on me. I look weird! It's like "where are the bottom of my pants?!"
So I ONLY wear them with boots, usually hefty slouchy type boots to sorta balance out the slimness of the bottom.I think it's all in HOW you wear them and what you wear them with. I got mine at Kohl's for $15...i didm't want to spend too much on a trend ya know?
I also ditto not getting them too tight or they look like an 80's denim leggings flashback =]
I love love love skinny jeans! If I could wear them everyday, I would. My fav way to wear them is with stilleto heels and either casual button down, a flowey top, or a cami with a cardigan sweater that is longer in front and doesn't close or have buttons.
I still hate skinny jeans but I Loooooove the jeans-tucked-into-boots look so I had to cave and buy them. They look awful on me without the boots though - my thigh are huge and calves are skinny so the don't help my proportions :)
If I want a straighter look, I'll just wear true straight leg jeans.
I'm a size 8-10, and I only wear skinny jeans if I'm wearing a tunic shirt that covers my hips and with boots tucked in. I've tried to rock the skinny jean/heels look, and I always end up looking really heavy in the hip/thigh area. Boots somehow balance it all out though.
I LOVE when slimmer girls rock wear skinnies though. Paired with some cute flats and a button down? Yep, loves it. But like with every trend, there's always going to be a body type that can wear it, and one that can't, and I don't think that skinny ity bity girls can wear EVERY trend, either :)
If you have the confidence and you can find the perfect fit, you should definitely go for it!
I'm a big girl but I agree with Jamaica about the gut. Thankfully I had a tummy tuck so i don't care bout the hips and butt, that's part of me being puerto rican! My FI loooooves me in skinny jeans, and until I tried them on, I hated them. Now I have my boot cuts stored in the back of the closet and love my skinnies. I do pair them with sweater or flowy shirt that hits me right at the hips. looks great tucked into my boots. wouldn't wear them with flats though cause i can't find them in tall, and they look high water on me.
I'm a 10-12 street size with a bubble butt and big dancer/soccer legs but I do own skinny jeans. Personally, I don't have the confidence to wear them without boots - the reason I bought them is because they're easy to tuck into all my boots. But I agree that there are def. bigger girls that rock the h*ll outta skinny jeans and look awesome… the picts of J.Hudson above prove the point.
There's even a pair of leggings at Saks that're designed to look exactly like Jeans - if they weren't more expensive than any jean I own I'd totally get them. ;)
i wear them... i love my body and i love how everything fits me... for the record im a size 14-16
those are the only jeans I like to wear..mostly because Im sorta short (5'4) and I wear them either with my heels or my boots
I wear them with a big sweater/shirt and tucked into boots... or if it rains, and then I'm wearing a rainjacket and rainboots!
I think you have to find out they work in your wardrobe. I have one pair that aren't super-tight, and I only wear those with boots.
I stick with bootcut, they look best on me!
I guess they have to fit a bigger girl right, b/c sometimes tighter jeans can make you appear bigger than you actually are.
I love them! I usually wear 8 or 10. I recently bought these and I really love them:
I agree with the other posters that it's about balance.. they usually work better with a little bit longer of a shirt.
I say that you should definitely wear whatever you think you look cute in. I ALWAYS get compliments when I know I LOVE my outfit and I'm wearing it out..... And what is this about a size 8 being "TOO CURVEY'....... And we wonder why all the little negative zeros get all of the modeling money with some of those but-her-faces!!!
Im a 18W (I guess that is Street size 20/22??) and I wear Dareon skinny jeans all the time. I have two pair I absolutely love and I either wear them with boots ontop or I will wear cute flats with a longer shirt. Just to give you an idea of what size that is.. at Lane Bryant I wear a 14/16 uptop (and that is too big sometimes) and an 18/20 on bottom (which is also too big sometimes). I am a 40DDD uptop as well.
@JoJoBananas - um, hello, rude!
My personal opinion is that you can wear things as long as they FIT! Skinny jeans are made in different sizes, so it is possible to wear them if you have that confidence and fashion sense.
Mitla -- I like that look, too.
J Hud looks great!
I am a size 6 in jeans right now, but I have avoided them because proportionally, I have really thick thighs. Also, the long shirt / tucked into boots style that I like looks stumpy on me because I am short so I don't really see the point. Maybe in the future I'll try them. I don't think there is anything wrong with them objectively on a woman of any size. It all depends on fit and how she styles them.
