Doctors can't figure out what's wrong... anyone else had these symptoms?

Maybe a medical Bee or someone who's had similar problems will be able to suggest something.

I've been getting what I thought was the stomach flu a lot over the last year, maybe once a month. This last month of so I've gotten it 4 or 5 times. I'm waiting to see a GI doctor but all my blood tests and xrays came back normal. I have no idea what's causing it but it's pretty difficult to eat and go to work and school and such. Anyone seen or had this issue before?

Difficulty eating and stomach flu-like symptoms...my grandma had these when she was young, and it turned out she had something wrong with her gallbladder. It's worth asking about.

Have you seen an allergist? Start a food journal and see if the symptoms are triggered by anything in your diet. My dad developed a milk allergy in his 40's and was having similar problems.

honestly, i agree with the allergy thing 100 percent. My brother was having those exact same symptoms for years....he constantly had an upset stomach and a fever and was always exhausted and in pain. at first the doctors told him he had IBS, and then some other GI thing, and they tested him for lots of other stuff. After a couple years he finally found out that he had celiac's disease and is gluten intolerant. As soon as he cut ALL WHEAT out of his diet he was a different person! definitely look into allergies.

@Mrs Grape: GI doctor would test for something like that right? Or is that another specialist? Thanks :)

@metalbride: I haven't, but I've kept a food journal now and I have before for other stomach issues and nothing stands out :( Would've been so much easier.

@MissDareDevil: My doctor tested for Celiac's already, she thought it was a strong possibility too but it was negative.

I second @MissDareDevil: It is highly likely you could have gluten intolerance. I do, and as soon as I cut it out of my diet, my life was 10 times better! I don't have your symptoms, but those are the most common ones linked to celiac disease/gluten intolerance.

Stop eating anything with wheat, barley, or rye and see if it makes a difference! That's the easiest way to tell, as most tests they perform in the doctor's office aren't accurate.

@galloway111: I got tested for gluten intolerance and it came back negative, but I 100% have an intolerance. When I don't eat it, I don't get my symptoms. When I do eat it (even just a little) my symptoms come back.

@Mrs. Fireworks: Were you ever officially diagnosed then? I'll give it a try, though I'm not sure I have anything in my apartment that doesn't have any of those, lol. I'll try buying some gluten-free food.

I went to the doctor for a at least a year and the only thing they could come up with was IBS.

But I've also figured out I can't eat feta cheese either. Which is sad because I love it.

I've increased my fiber and water intake and as long as I keep that up, I do alright.

@SparklyBride2011: I take fiber supplements and the only thing I've every really liked to drink is water. The only food I know I can't eat is bananas, which is weird because that's a food they suggest for recovering from the stomach flu.

They thought I might have IBS at one point but ruled it out... but usually that doesn't involve vomiting, does it?

It takes at least 21 days for any remaining antibodies to remain in your system after eliminating the cause. Meaning, if you eliminate gluten or lactose or soy or anything else, your body will still be inflammed for at least 21 days after the last ingestion.  So if you decide to eliminate foods from your diet, make sure that you give your body a month to recover before you decide if they make a difference or not.  Continue with the food/poop journal and see if you can make any further links-- high in caffiene, spicy, or acidic foods, white flour/sugar, meat/seafood vs vegetables, super fatty foods, etc.  Also, soy is a very common allergy and it's found many products you'd never think of as Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (or some variation thereof), it's in most salad dressings and I even saw it on some cans of tuna fish once years ago!  There are many hidden sources of ingredients, so if you do eliminate things, make sure you know all the scientific and unscientific names out there for each food group.  Keep up the hard work and you can get allergy testing done by asking your MD.  Re: gallbladder issues, next time you call or see them, ask them about it-- especially if you notice symptoms after a fatty meal.  You may not be able to breakdown and digest the fat properly.

@longdistanceco_ca: Ugh, I want to be done throwing up NOW, haha. I think I might ask to be tested for food allergies though, thanks for the ideas.

@galloway111:  I actually have really similar symptoms, including the vomiting, and I don't know what's going on either :/  Let me know if anything works for you, and I'll do the same.  There is nothing worse than having perpetual stomach problems :(

Is it cyclical? It could be a parasite.

You need to see a gastroenterologist. I went through the same thing and had an endoscopy, a colonoscopy and a hydrogen breath test. It turned out I had ulcers and Fructose Malabsorption (basically fructose intolerance). A lot of people who get diagnosed with IBS (which you might, that's the go-to diagnosis) actually have FM. But I think ulcers are a good possibility for you, too.

My best friend keeps dealing with recurring Hpylori. Have them check for that as well. It can be exacerbated by stress. Here is a link about it.

@sarahbabs: You know what's funny, I always see your posts and feel like we're very similar, since you usually post what I'm thinking. So it's a little funny that we have the same problem, ha.

@SandyDollHair: No, it's completely random from what I can tell. :(

@ThePrincessMaggie: I'm waiting for a call from the GI, I'm listed as urgent but for them that still means it could be 2 weeks. I had an endoscopy once before and they found my stomach was beginning to form ulcers and gave me medicines, but those meds aren't doing anything now. I'm wondering if it's an ulcer too.

@Storm0075: I was tested for that as well, it was negative :(

I second getting tested for allergies. Also, this could be a gluten intolerence maybe?

DH had stomach flu symptoms for about 3 months and they never figured it out...

He stopped eating gluten and slowly felt better, even though he tested negative for gluten intollerence.

I agree with what others said about food journaling - write down EVERYTHING you eat for two weeks, as well as any symptoms you have. Showing this to a doctor can be a huge help and is probably what any specialist would suggest you do anyway. Even if nothing in particular stands out to you, it may mean something different to a doctor. Good luck, I hope you feel better!
