As a healthcare provider, attitudes like the ones presented by your doctor really grind my gears. Modern healthcare is team based, with the nurse/doctor/physiotherapist/whatever working together WITH the patient to determine what their concerns are and how best to address their needs. That includes LISTENING TO THE PATIENT.
I work in the Canadian system, which is very different from the US. I really feel for your healthcare insurance situation. Does your HMO not permit you to choose a new physician? I am not too familiar with the managed care system. I just know in Canada you can go to whatever doctor you want, provided they are taking new patients.
This is why I honestly want to have a midwife as my primary care physician. They go through training just like anyone else and they're more equipped to deal with treating women and children because they've gone through it themselves. After watching all the problems my mom had I really don't want to have to deal with it. The only problem is that I don't know where to find one around here. That and FI's not exactly excited about the idea because he knows that I don't want to be drugged up when I give birth to our child when we decide to have one.

Sorry, this is a total vent. I feel like most people heart their doctors, and I am so jealous, because mine drive me crazy! Health insurance is super expensive for the self-employed, so I have this horrible HMO.
My number one issue is that my doctors do not listen to me. It's like the 1940s or something. I walk in, they tell me 'how it's going to be', and if I try to engage with them at all I get a condescending "I am the doctor here!" attitude, with a refusal to budge on anything. Then half of the time I end up paying out of pocket for a private specialist if I want the issue resolved at all. Just one example - they insisted for months that I had asthma because I coughed constantly. After endless ineffective treatment with an inhaler, I finally went to an asthma specialist who said I had walking pneumonia, and voila, I was cured within days on antibiotics.
I was just on the phone with them trying to get an error in my file corrected, and my former primary care doctor pretty much out and out called me a liar when I said there was incorrect information in my file (I know this as I'm applying for way more expensive, but less sucky, insurance.) The idea that she made a mistake was impossible to her, so I must be a scam artist looking to sweet talk a lower insurance rate by 'editing' my record.
I find this sooo frustrating! I am the only one out there dealing with this? Do other bees have to deal with crappy health care?
