I don't but I want one my friend has one and she loves it, you really can't compare anything to it. I juice more than I blend so I haven't been able to convince myself I need this.
I have one... got it at Costco; and it's pretty amazing. :) Would definitely recommend it; I think WS is now carrying thme.
Oh man, I love the vitamix. I dont have one but I would LOVE one. I didn't even think about adding it to the registry...good idea
@june42011: We have a juicer and we never use it! I think we would use this if we got one, but it's hard to justify that price tag!
@vickyness: What do you make in it? I'm curious how often you use it and what you mostly ues it for.
@petitfour: They have it at Bed Bath and Beyond! You could use your registry completion coupon or one of the 20% coupons. We received enough gift cards to buy one...but I'm still trying to justify spending $500 (even in gift cards) on a blender!
We have a KitchenAid blender at home and it works great! We love making smoothies, even alcoholic ones, with frozen fruit and some ice cream and milk. I use a food processor as well, but I heard the Vitamix can do the job of a blender and food processor. You can make nut butters or hummus in it as well! Almond butter is so expensive to buy, I love to make my own!
I used to make smoothies every morning for breakfast with mine. Then I realized that there was so much fruit in them, that they really weren't that healthy (lots of extra calories) and probably made me gain weight. But I tried tons of blenders before the Vitamix and none could do the things it does or get frozen fruit as smooth.
Since you said you have a juicer and don't use it I'm curious...why do you think you'd use this blender? If you just need something for basic blending needs I think you can go with one at a much lower cost. Vitamix is awesome because it can do the leafy greens and harder to blend stuff. My cheapy walmart blender will make fruit smoothies.
@vermontia: That is true, I hadn't thought about that. For us, I think it's more about eating healthier in general and sneaking in stuff like carrots and kale and spinach...all that stuff we don't like to eat! I do love all of the soups and dips you can make with it though--I really hate chopping everything up and peeling, so it seems like it could cut down on a lot of that.
@MaraBeth: OMG... everything. I think i could pulverize a brick in that thing if i wanted to! Juices/veggie smoothies/salsa,.. My mom makes this "healthy smoothie" of everything but the kitchen sink in hers and used to have all of us drink it. It'd have spinach/veggies/broccoli/etc. My dad managed to lower his cholesterol and high blood pressure since it was a faster way of getting a lot more fiber+ veggies down.
I also make soups/fantastic hot chocolate in mine. I think I use it more than my food processor right now since it has less pieces to wash. Down side is that the blade isn't removeable so you have to be careful cleaning around it down there.
@june42011: We used to have a juicer, I'm not sure what happened to it. It was a pretty low-end model and very difficult to use. There was so much prep involved that it took forever to get a small quantity of juice. We want to start eating whole foods (fruits and veggies) and doing green smoothies in the morning, which would be pretty difficult with the cheapie blender we have now. What I like about this is that it could take the place of so many separate appliances I have now just taking up space.
@vickyness: Someone told me to clean theirs they just put in warm water and a few drops of dish soap and turned it on for a bit. I wonder if that works?
My mom got one and then bought one for my sister and will help me to get one. We love it! We use it all the time for smoothies, as a food processor. Definitely worth the money. It's super easy to clean too. I just put some water in and turn it on.
@MaraBeth: it does but sometimes there's still residue underneath especially when I pulverize sticky things ie chocolate/hummus/nut butters. I think that's the only downside to the vitamix. I was in Jamba the other day and realized that they used Vitamix blenders!
Also over time, the plastic container will stain. Hasn't happened to mine but my mom's has taken on a strange green tint.... she also make veggies smoothies every morning and has done that for the last 6-7 years.
We got one for our wedding from my parents... I'm obsessed with it!!! I make smoothies and soups and sauces yummm
I've really never heard anyone who has one say that it's "just okay" or that they never use it. Actually, I've run into a lot of people who are pretty obsessed with theirs, haha...that gives me hope that it would be a good investment! I know DH's old boss uses her model from the 70s and it still works.
@MaraBeth: Register for it. ;) WS has a great policy, try it out, if you don't like it, take it back. I personally don't think you'll take it back...
@vickyness: It's on our registry, and our wedding has passed, so it doesn't look like we're going to get it that way! I think we're going to get one and try it out, though. I love making smoothies and soups and looking at the recipes, I'd cut the time at least in half!
@MaraBeth: awwww... at least you can use youre 10% completion discount! :)
@vickyness: Yes, I think that's the plan! I just have to make sure we have the counter space...
We have a ninja pro and I think it does all of the things you are talking about plus it can whip up cream or mousse and can do some dough stuff with a dough hook. Additional perk is the price, at around 120 with a BBB coupon it's a steal. We use it for everything and the parts are removable for easy cleaning!
I dream of getting a vitamix. I ilve close to my Aunt and she has one. We are constatnly making all kinds of things with it. I have been making hummus currently and I LOVE it. The consistency for me is where its at. Most regular blenders leave chunks and make cleaning the peice a chore. The vitamix just seems to pulverize the shit up so nicely ;)
I have one. It's AMAZING!!! I use it pretty much every day to make green shakes. I have also used it to make soup, sauces, and sorbet. Yum!
If you cant afford the Vitamix (or don't wanna spend the money), I suggest the Ninja. It's awesome!
I wanted a Vitamix for months but couldn't justify the price. They were at Costco one day and my fiance said he was sick of me talking about them and to just buy it already! haha! I bought it and it is the best kitchen purchase I've made. My smoothies taste way better and I make soups, etc. in it all the time. Definitely buy it if you can!

We were at Whole Foods this weekend and we went to a Vitamix Blender demonstration. I had made fun of DH for putting one on our registry (they're about $500), but after seeing the demonstration I was so impressed.
The demonstrator put whole fruits in (some with peels, rinds, etc) and it was amazing! She even made a non-alcoholic margarita with spinach. It made hot soup in the blender and all sorts of other very cool things!
I'm interested in eating more whole fruits/veggies and cutting back on processed stuff. We have enough in gift cards to buy one, but I want to see if anyone has one or something similar and if they like it/use it frequently.
