We have tan couches and dark brown wood end tables. I think to make it look airy you should use cooler colors (ours isn’t airy… we have red and yellow and an oriental rug) like a lighter blue or aquas/greens with darker brown and tan accents. But keep the cooler colors light and neutral.

Ha ha!  I have dark brown couches and a light brown entertainment center.  Our wall paint is a light sagey-green.  Not sure if that helps you any…  You can seen the couches and wall color in the Houses thread but the entertainment center is different from the one in that picture.

I was going to suggest using accents and window coverings in sky blue or sage green or cream.

I have lots of brown furniture and I used blue/green throw pillows and a rug to brighten the place up.  Also plants are helpful.  This is the rug I bought, from target.

Here is my stuff, the walls are a little more “vanilla” than I really wanted but by the time I had the paint on the walls I was SO sick of painting that I wasn’t about to change it. Eventually I will πŸ˜‰ I love our light sofas and the contrast with the dark wood. Oh, and don’t mind Lucy, she just wanted to show you how comfy the couch is, haha!

@Lees4308: I love the color combination of the cream, yellow and green! It is so beautiful warm and inviting. I have a lot of blues in my house and have been wanting to do a little more green, our bedroom is yellow, green, cream and then a dark cherry wood. It’s by far my favorite room as far as colors πŸ™‚

I think the green is nice too. We’ve got dark brown furniture and beige sofas, and have used red as our accent colour because we have an oriental rug that’s mostly red. The blinds are white, so they seem to keep it fairly light and airy as well as the very high cathedral ceiling and massive windows. But I do keep getting distracted by sage/light green cushions and curtains etc πŸ™‚

Our room has chocolate brown couches and tan walls/accent pillows. We used this set of postcards as inspiration for accent colors of aqua and pink. Just a few touches here and there but a nice way to add color. (

Have you checked out Young House Love?  They describe their home’s color scheme now as,  “’sea glass inspired’ since it’s full of soft creams, sandy neutrals, serene blues, and a variety of greens- all colors of old weathered glass that can wash up on the beach.”

So, when I read your post it made me think of their colors.  Everything in their house is so easy, breezy and sounds a lot like what you are looking for, so I’m sure you could find LOTS of great inspiration from their site!

We have tan, dark brown (the end table, coffee table, and entertainment center, and throw pillows), and sage green – I’m going o add splashes of lilac or deep purple in there – just haven’t figured out what I wanted yet.

Our couches are tan kinda looks like this

all our accent furniture is from Ikea in the dark brown they have and our walls are sky blue and all our artwork on the walls is in black frames…I LOVE the contrast and the cool dimension it gives to the room.

When I move in with FI we are painting our walls a light grey, tan furniture, dark accent furniture and all our decor will be light yello and green πŸ™‚

We will, but our sub floor is being repaired so you’ll have to wait about…. oh… 2-3 weeks for images πŸ™‚
