I kind of feel this way about dogs. I love dogs, love playing with them, but have only actually had a dog once in my life. I think I will probably get one someday, when we have a farm with lots of land for him/her to run around on, but right now I am perfectly content with my slobber-free kitties. :)
I dont have one...our landlord wont let us.
As soon as we get out of this place, we are getting a doggie I hope!
I do have a childhood pet that is still alive and with my parents in Florida though. He's a cutie..but he's old...15 years old!
We don't have one as we are renters and aren't allowed...but I think we would get a dog if we could!
Since my two pet rats died over the summer, I'm now pet-less. I totally feel the void, and I fawn over other people's pets like there's no tomorrow.
But we're going to wait until after the wedding is over to get a new family member..FI has his heart set on a lolcat.
I could go without a dog in the house, too, like lilyfaith. I really would be perfectly content to have ONLY cats.
I was petless for the 4 years I was in college and I felt like my life was a little empty.
i don't have any animals, not a huge fan of them. i'd love a kitten though....
I have no pet, but it is because I have no job, and also because I'd like to be a bit more settled before having a pet. Done with traveling and all of that. BF does not want a pet, but I am certain if I had one, he would love it.
I don't mean that in the "well I'm getting one and he'll have to deal" (ok, maybe just a bit, but he knows) sort of way, but more in the "He says he doesn't, but I know him better than that"
He used to have a Westie, and it was nearly as old as he was. They eventually had to have it put down. :(
So his mom would ask him "do you miss the dog?" and mr. i-dont-like-animals would harden his face and say no. BUT then when there is a Westie somewhere, like on the TV, his face would light up and he will say "oh look it's a (dog's name)-doggie!"
Right, you don't miss the dog, and you certainly don't talk to the cat at my mom's, no, not at all.
FI is a cat person, while I love both dogs and cats. We rent and our landlord allows no pets right now, so that is a bit of a drag. I think when we move we will definitely get a kitten. Even though I want a dog so badly, I know 1) working 12 hour shifts is not conducive with walking your dog a couple of times a day and 2) we will probably not be able to afford a house. Feel free to check the housing prices in Vancouver, British Columbia. It's insane. IF we are lucky, we might be able to get a townhouse in the 'burbs. *sigh*
We don't have pets anymore and we aren't sure if we want anymore, at least not anytime soon.
We don't have any pets at our home right now, but wish we could. The only reason we don't is that we rent and they aren't allowed! But they are a big hassle too! It makes things easier not having them (trips, etc). And plus you don't have to go through the horrid potty training!
Well its nice to know that I'm not the only one who doesn't want a pet!
So this might be a dumb question: but is it a common policy that rental properties can't have pets?
Very common. The few places that let you make you pay an extra deposit, sometimes more each month, and they usually limit the size, and sometimes breed.
ME! We love to go to Petsmart and look at the cats, and we'll even occasionally head out to humane society. That being said, we treat it like a zoo even though A really really REALLY wants a cat. I'm super allergic, though, so unless I start taking meds its a no go. I thought I wanted a dog til I dogsat my friends German Shepard.
FI and I don't have pets either because our apartment won't allow. I'm hoping to get a dog and a cat in the future.
we have no pets and i want one or two soooooooooo badly! ive had cats my whole life and i love them because they're fun but generally low maintenance. our schedules are too crazy to have a dog. but his reasoning for not wanting cats in our current apt is that he doesnt want to deal w/the litterbox and he doesn't think there's a good place for it so that it or the smell doesnt offend us. pah! i think he would give in after a little more convincing but i dont have it in me to deal with right now.
I don't have any - FI loves dogs and we randomly 'borrow' on of my best friend's dog and take her for a walk. My friend LOVES it (she's a new mom) and we get the enjoyment of the pet.
We also go to the pound a lot and buy dog treats and give them to them. :)
FI would like dogs one day - but I didn't have them (dogs) growing up and think they are so much work (not to mention that I get SUPER attached to pets and think the benefit isn't worth the loss) - fuzzy logic, I know - but you should have seen me bawl when my fish died a few years back... and it was a FISH!
I would love a kitten or even a puppy, but my husband is allergic. More importantly, he lives in Missouri, and I live in New York. Travelling with a pet 3 weekends a month is not ideal. I hope we can get an allergy-friendly dog when I move to St. Louis in a few years.
aaw pet free homes? I'm not familiar with that concept.. lol Me and the FI rent an apartment usually it's a $250 fee for pets under 75lbs but we were lucky and didn't have to put anything down for pets! We have a cat and dog that equal about 25lbs.. together! lol
I honestly, could not picture a home without pets, but I know there are a lot of people who just aren't pet people. It's all good!
We have 2 pugs, and honestly they are like our children. They get birthday gifts - including small family 'parties' with doggie appropriate cake and ice cream, wrapped Christmas gifts, a little nibble of people food here and there (the vet says lean meats and such without sauce are ok!), etc. I don't think I have ever been a day in my life that I haven't had SOME sort of pet - cats, dogs, horses (yes, strangely enough but a horse can be a pet). I just think that sometimes pets are more understanding than people and definitely less judgemental. It's been shown time and time again that petting animals (dogs & cats usually) reduces blood pressure and stress/anxiety. I definintely agree!

I haven't had a pet since I was a teenager. It's not that I don't want one, it seems more that it hasn't been so practical. I love cats, but every one of my friends has someone in their family who is allergic plus I wouldn't deal well with the shedding all over. Between being gone at least 12 hours a day and traveling whenever possible, it doesn't seem fair to an animal. Maybe someday....
I'm also on the no pet train. Too much work, too much cleaning, too much commitment. Yeah, they're cute, but they are a big responsibility.
I figure there's no reason to tie myself down to an animal when I'm young and free. Maybe when I have kids I'd consent to it, but honestly, I have no desire to have a pet.
@ Recessionista - with regards to the limitations on pets in rentals - it depends on where you live. I live in BC (Canada) and it's really common to not be allowed pets but in Ontario landlords aren't allowed to put in that type of rule.
We can't have pets in our apartment, and I don't really want any! I feel like they're dirty!! :-/ I love animals, but just not in my house

Are you not allergic to dogs anymore? If so, that's great! Do you still have the cat?
@RB- yeah, unfortunately we had to turn down a few nice places because there were no pets allowed. Our current apartment allows up to two cats, but get this: it's $200 non-refundable for EACH cat. On top of the $700 security deposit.
We may have lied and said we only have one cat... we have four....
I'm not a pet person. At all. Fish I can do...yep..that's about it.

I love looking at all these pet posts & I love animals... from afar. It seems like I'm a minority in the hive! You guys loooove your pets :)
I have zero interest in actually having a pet of my own. I love their personalities & how cuddly and cute they are-- but I don't really feel like having one in my house. I hate animal hair, the dander makes my eyes red & they're a lot of work! haha I do want children & I know they're 10 times the work, but I'm not there yet...
If you don't have a pet at home- do you want one or are you satisfied with oohing & ahhing over other peoples animals?
