Just curious to see if we have any entrpreneurs here! I don’t have a business of my own or even remotely enough money to entertain the idea of starting one, but it’s something I’d be interested in doing in the future! There are a ton of ideas that I would be interested in, but the area I’m from is unique in that it’s sort of reinventing itself and I have no idea what could even be successful yet! A lot of microbusinesses have cropped up in the past few years and seem to be doing pretty well despite the overall economy, so it’s something DH and I have thought about.
Anyway, has anyone made dreams like this come true?

Right now I’m a nanny. Not technically my own business, but I have to advertise myself, find/choose families, set my schedule, etc. Not really having a boss has been amazing for me, and I don’t think I could go back to having a boss again unless they were a really swell person LOL. My only prior experience with bosses was in retail, so that’s not much to go off of. I’m currently in the process of getting my real estate license, and I plan to buy/fix up/rent out houses with my family.

Well…we don’t have a business yet, but we want to open a mini golf course in the future. Our town doesn’t have one…the closest one is an hour away.

I’m a freelance graphic designer for my main income, and then my family has a small farm. My FI and I make and sell jam, bread, etc, and then we sell veggies, meat, and eggs that my mom raised. We do a weekly market and I run a CSA box program where people sign up for a 20 week season of delivered food.
My FI and I also have a small business where we make engraved wooden signs and garden stakes. We’ve just started making a bunch of wedding related signs after getting inspired while planning our wedding.
It can be stressful being self-employed, but I also love it!

I own a post-construction and now residential cleaning company. Glamourous? No. Lucrative? Let’s just say I’m not passionate about gleaming toilets…
I can’t be an employee though, I just can’t.

I’m an academic writing consultant. Universities buy in my services when their staff and doctoral students need writing advice. This is usually in the context of publishing research papers.

Well my family own a business and I work for it. So does that count?
Anyway we deal with european trade. not so much buying and selling but buying and selling the people who buy and sell things and facilitating trade between people and companies that werent linked previously. We also dabble with a bit of trade and trade links with commonweath countries (trying to grow that) and we obviously have links to the world of financial markets.
It sounds boring but it is really interesting and I love it.

@Miss Fish: I design invitations, clothing & other goodies on zazzle & cafepress as my main income. I am also a nurse. I would love to just work from home, but I would honestly go crazy never leaving my house, and I love nursing….Designing is just something that I happen to be good at.

I’m not incorporated and I’m not in charge of anyone else, but I’m self-employed, so it does have similarities. I’m a freelance illustrator and comic book artist. Drawing was the only thing I ever wanted to do, and I made it my job by just… doing it all the time.
If you’re interested in getting into a field, I’d say just jump in to whatever degree you’re comfortable! Try stuff out and see what sticks!
