Hey Bees.  I know I've posted things about tattoos before.  I'm seriously considering getting one.  I'm just SO NERVOUS I'll regret it.

So, I wanted to ask the tattooed Bees: do any of you regret your tattoos?

I dont I love it and am getting another one :) I think as long as you put thought into what your getting and think about it not just rush into getting it you shouldnt regret it...

Don't get a tattoo when you're 15. That's my advice ;) Thankfully I was smart enough to put it where it can be easily hidden. I don't hate it, but I don't love it either, I've just grown out of it if that makes sense. I have a second one I got when I was 20 that I still like. I'd like to get a third one but I'm a bit nervous about it.

@MsPanda: I've been thinking about it for years (though I did just recently finalize the font that I want).  I'm sure I want the phrase.  I'm just...worried that I won't want the phrase when I'm 65, haha.

@bakerella: Lol that's VERY good advice.  Are tattoos as addictive as I've heard they are?

I got my blue rose when I was 18. I still love it. It needs to be touched up, but I don't regret it at all.I plan on getting more some day when we have the spare funds.

I do however regret the one my ex got that has my name in a heart on it. As far as I know he is on his 2nd marriage and never got it covered up.

@MissOtter31: What's the phrase and where are you thinking of getting it? Personally, I like having my tattoos somewhere that I can decide if I want to show them or not. I wouldn't want "crazy pants" or something written on the back of my neck when I was 65 ;)  I found I wanted another tattoo within a year of my first, so if you can kind of hold off and be patient, you should be able to keep yourself under control. My second one was 10 years ago and I've just been debating getting a third in the last year or two.

I have 4 and I don't regret any of them. I got my first on my 18th birthday. Yes, tattoos are addictive! The ones I have are all deeply meaningful, I have to keep reminding myself I shouldn't get one just to get one the way my friends do. Those are the ones you usually end up regretting.

@bakerella: It would be on my upper back so if I wore a t-shirt it wouldn't be visible.  The phrase is a Harry Potter spell "Expecto Patronum."  I know a lot of people would roll their eyes about that kind of thing.  But, in case you don't know about HP, Expecto Patronum is the spell used to protect yourselves from Dementors.  Dementors are a metaphor for depression and bad thoughts.  To conjure a patronus, you have to think of your happiest thought.

I was depressed in high school and I love the idea of happiness and positivity getting you through sadness, depression, and despair.  Plus, of course, it's Harry Potter related and I've loved Harry Potter for 13 years now.

Sorry, that was a kind of lengthy response.  Haha.

I have five tattoos (getting my sixth this week!), and I do have slight regret about one of them.

What you said about knowing you want the phrase now, but might not want it when you're 65? That's my problem. Really think about that. I love the font; I love the look of the tattoo. It's perfect and exactly what I wanted at the time. But I'm uncomfortable with the idea of having the phrase on my body for the rest of my life.

the best advice I can offer is this:

Do not get a tattoo if you have doubts. Do not get it until you are as sure as you can be that you will be comfortable having it as a part of you for the rest of your life, seeing it every day, and explaining it to people if they ask about it. Decide where on your body you want the tattoo, far in advance of getting it done, and really start picturing it there.

For me, the point at which I know I'm ready for a new tattoo is when I can no longer picture a part of my body without it, when I feel like something is missing from my person without the tattoo. I don't know if other people have that feeling, but I do.

@MissOtter31: I'm a HP buff too :) Sounds like it's meaningful to you which is the most important thing! When you're thinking of location though, try to think of if you were going to a work function for you or DH down the road and you had to wear an evening dress, would you be able to see it? A bathing suit when you're 60? That's what I always think about. It's easy enough to cover up something there in day to day life, but would you be self conscious of it in other occasions if you couldn't cover it up or would it be distracting? Or would you mind if other people saw it? Some people wear their ink with pride (and rightly so, I've seen some amazing tattoos!) and would specifically pick a bathing suit or dress to show it off. It just depends on the type of person you are!

I love my two tat's and am glad I have them. Though the one on my back/upper shoulders really does need to be touched up.

@bakerella: That's exactly what I'm worried about!  I'm sure I'll love it when I'm younger but, like, when I'm a mom and I'm with my kids around the pool?  I don't know if I'll want it visible.  But I don't really know where to get it that could be hidden.  I was thinking about my ribs but then the whole stretching-during-pregnancy thing stresses me out.  I'm sure I'm overthinking things but I'd rather overthink than underthink (is that a word?)

@ChaiAnkh99: I'm definitely already imagining my back with the tattoo and I love it when I imagine it.  But when I was looking up places to get it earlier, I started panicking because it was becoming "real."  If that makes sense.

Also is it somewhere you would be able to see with your wedding dress? and are you ok with that?

I do.  But not that much.  The upside of the dated "tramp stamp" location is that I never see it and mostly forget its there.  My mentality at the time was that I would only have to live with it publicly as long as I was willing to wear a bikini...which was true.  If it was on my arm, I'd have gotten it lasered off long ago.

P.S. After reading your explanation post, I must say I love your idea and especially the double meaning! If someone asks you about it, and you're not comfortable telling them about your victory over depression, you can just say, "I'm a huge HP fan."

I have one that is similarly dual-purpose, and I love that I can either give the whole story or just the Cliffs Notes version depending on who asks.

I loved having three of my tattoos visible on my wedding day; I actually wished I'd gotten another beforehand.

Good luck, and post a pic if you do decide to go for it!

@MsPanda: That's something I thought about a lot.  I really think I would embrace my tattoo on my wedding day.  If I decide to change my mind, I'd probably airbrush cover it.

Love mine! Tiny one on the inside of my wrist, one on my hip, and one on the inside of my ankle. They're all easily hidden. Many people who have known me for years have never noticed my wrist one.

@ChaiAnkh99: Thank you!  I would definitely just tell strangers that I'm a huge Harry Potter fan.  They can judge me if they want, haha.  When I imagine my wedding day, I actually visualize myself with a tattoo now.  I'd love to have wedding pictures with mine and my boyfriend's tattoos showing.  :)

@Melini: Haha I actually thought about a tramp stamp but my love handles are out of this world.  I would never want to actually show OFF my tattoo because I wouldn't want people to see the muffin top, haha.

@kjgirl05: I have to admit my best friend has a wrist tattoo that I didn't notice for months.  Whoops!  I like subtle little wrist tattoos but for some reason Harry Potter wrist tattoos are crazy popular.

I dont regret mine..but I also really cant see them that well. I have the "tramp stamp", nothing elaborate and I cant see it so Im not sick of it. I also have a small one on my hip that is not that noticeable. I imagine that if I had gotten some similair to my coworkers that I would regret it.

Mine is on my thigh so you can see it when I am in a bathing suit or naked. Even regular shorts cover it for the most part.

I have 3, no regrets. My rule for myself was to wait for 6 weeks and see if I still like it then I get it.

@MissOtter31: Why don't you try getting it hennaed on for a few weeks (a couple of applications worth) and see how you feel about it? Henna typically lasts anywhere from 7-10 days. When it starts to fade you could just get someone to trace over it again.

@bakerella: That's a possibility.  I'm just worried that knowing it's temporary will mess with my head.  BUT, who knows?  Maybe it'll really really help.

I still love mine. I chose something that represented me back when I was 19 (and way before), but also now that I am 22, and hopefully on until I am 60. I also went with putting it on my foot. I think foot tattoos are adorable and they look great in most shoes. I however, waited two years to get what I wanted. And there have been times that I have wanted more, but I resisted and ultimately that feeling came to pass. I think if you think about it all the time you are bound to keep wanting it, give yourself a break of a few months and then come back to it! If you still love it, get it!

I have 1 and I love it still! I had someone tell me to decide what you want and where you want it and then wait 7 years and if you still want it, then get it. I didn't quite make it 7 years (more like 3 years) but I think it's the right idea to be sure you like it.

@MrsAlbright: I'm at, like, two years right now and I always go back to it.  I'll stop thinking about it for a while and then I think about it suddenly again and I'm still totally in love with it.  That's gotta be a good sign.

I dont personally have one. But I know an uncle who got a few in the 70's and wishes today that he never got them. He said that the older you and the older the tattoo is, the more faded it looks,it spreads out into the area around the original tattoo area, etc etc. He said a couple other reasons, but so many conversations were going on around me that I wasnt really paying attention.

There are lots of reasons y I will never get one, but one of the major ones is that I have heard plenty of people say that they wish that they never got one. With so many older people regretting, that makes me pause in a huge way.

Did you know the newest industry that is growing like crazy?! Laser removal of tattoos!! Its  an industry that is growing every year.

@Earlybride: I know what you mean.  I have a grandmother who got a tattoo removed (though that was years ago.  I think it was another man's name from when she was a wrestler groupie, haha).  My grandfather on the other side has Navy tattoos and you can't even tell what they are anymore, lol.  So I'm worried that'll be the case for me.  I did know that tattoo removal was a fast growing industry.  I definitely don't want to ever get my theoretical tattoo removed.  Too much pain!

I have a few tattoos and for a while I considered getting an HP tattoo, though I had too many doubts about it.  I am a HUGE book-lover and Harry Potter nerd, but I just couldn't put it on me permanently-- too afraid I would regret it later.  I've regretted none of my other tattoos, though!

I have 6, 2 on my hips, 2 on my wrists, a giant piece on my chest, and one on my ribs. I still love all of them. The one on my chest is by far the biggest and commented on the most. I have had it for about 3 years now and don't regret it. I do hate it when people ask me if I regret it though.. and when they ask "but what about when you're older?"

@Stassney: Lol, oops!  Hope I didn't offend you or anything with this post!  How often do people ask you if you regret it?  I could see that getting annoying.

@bookworm88: I totally understand that!  If I had no other meaning than just liking Harry Potter, I'm sure I wouldn't get it.  I like my "hidden meaning" though.  :D  And I'm glad you love all of your other tattoos!

I don't regret mine at all. I love it! It's been 6 years and I still love it!

Here's a tip: Hang up the design where you'll see it every day for at least 2 months prior to getting it inked on your skin. There were a couple designed I thought I liked that didn't pass that test.

Another tip: Get it where it's easily covered up if need be. I have mine on my shoulder blade, I can easily show it off and easily hide it.

@MissOtter31: I'd say I get asked if I regret it probably about 2-3 times every couple of months. Usually by older people, sometimes young people too though. Also no worries! You didn't offend me at all!

I regret mine. I'm just over it. It's on my lower back, and so I rarely see it, and no else does either unless I'm wearing low cut pants. I got it when I was 21, and now at 32 it's just sort of meh. It could use touching up as the colour has faded but I'm not very motivated to spend the money maintaining it. It's not like a haircut that will grow out eventually. I mostly forget about it, until someone sees it for the first time and shrieks "you have a tattoo!" Yeah, I do. Honestly, I'm involved with youth groups and I tell teen girls to try out things like piercings, or fun hair, or things that can be reversible instead.

I like the idea and your explanation of "expecto patronum." Maybe there is some other way to use this phrase. Engraved on a piece of jewelry perhaps?

@MissOtter31: I have 5 and am actually planning my 6th. Two on my right inner ankle, one on my left inner ankle and two on my hips. One says "Even Angels Fall." I got it for very similar reasons you want yours, I too suffered from depression (and still do) in high school. It was a terribly dark time for me. If angels, the most perfect of creatures, can "fall" and make mistakes, surely I can too. I don't regret it one bit.

I have one with a dual meaning, it's the Horde symbol from World of Warcraft. I played for about 6 years and met a lot of people. It was a good point in my life and I wanted to commemorate it. I chose the Horde tribal symbol because it looks like a tribal and it means strength and honour. People who have played WoW recognize it immediately. Everyone else gets told it's a tribal that means strength and honor. I like both meanings. :)

The only ones I "regret" are the ones on my hip. I had them done when I was 16 by a friend who was apprenticing while I lay on her bedroom floor. I LOVE what they are, but I'll likely have them covered with a bigger, nicer version of the same things.

Honestly, if you love it and it means to you what you say it means, absolutely do it. I also think that's the perfect spot for it and is actually where I'm considering placing my next tattoo.
