Oh my I was curious the other week and started watching a few episodes and lets just say. GROSS.
I can’t believe anyone would let their house get that bad. I just watched the season premire were the lady was a level 5 hoarder. That is the worst it can get. By the time they finished cleaning the house they removed over 4,000 lbs of garbage and trash. They even found two dead cats that she “lost” and didn’t know died. I can’t even believe it.

I’ve attempted to watch this show but can never finish an episode. I’m pretty sure it’s because I get anxiety when I watch it. I can’t stand clutter, etc and it really gets to me. I feel so bad for those people who I feel have a mental illness of some sort.

I gagged when they found the cats! I don’t watch the show regularly because it makes me really sad for them. It’s really hard to believe that people would walk over garbage and live like that. But I have a friend, and her mom is a hoarder–and it really is a disorder that tears families apart. There’s also another show called “Animal Hoarders” on Animal Planet that I caught a few minutes of last night–I just cried when I saw that.

Yeah, that show scares the crap out of me…my family jokes and calls me an animal hoarder though, haha, with my 3 dogs and 2 cats (but I don’t have animal feces anywhere but in the litterbox).

I watch this show but generally start picking up and cleaning uselessly (as I keep my house pretty spic and span) before it’s over. It absolutely disgusts me that anyone can let it get THAT far. Did you see the previews for next week??? I seriously might vomit.

I agree! It’s so stressful watching that show! I want to get them to realize all they have is crap! whhhhyyyy do they want old used food containers and nasty hairbrushes??!?
so glad they’re getting help. I wish their families the best!

I find that show very fascinating. It makes me a little bit fearful because I have had some anxiety issues in the past (mostly due to academics), and when I get overly anxious in my life, my house can get cluttered.
I think in most cases, an emotionally distressing event can send someone from being a little untidy to being a hoarder. In some cases, it doesn’t even begin as untidiness – it’s more of an emotional attachment to “stuff” that reminds them of someone or something.

@Masala: I agree. Like for instance the episode where this woman who shot her boyfriend out of self defense and later felt so worthless and beat up over it she hoarded.

I like to watch the show, but it is on so late where we live that it is often before bed viewing and gets me all creeped out before sleep and I dream about hoarders!
Boyfriend or Best Friend does not like it at all. We watched one from last season with a lady that had about 30 cats removed from her home, and many many kitten skeletons/cat mummies also. It was so sad.
I tease him that since we now have HD we will have to watch it and we’ll be able to see all the little critters crawling over everything.

I actually used to work on this show, talk about stressful show to watch, stressful show to work on! It’s a very sad disorder and I suggest anyone who has a hoarder in their life to seek professional help. It often makes it worse if you go through and toss out their stuff on your own.

This. Show. Is. INSANE!
My Mom is a bit of a hoarder. Every room of her house is packed full of junk and knick knacks that have been there for years and years. But she doesn’t hoard garbage or anything like that, thankfully. But I get a little anxious when I go to her house because I just want to clean it!

I’m thoroughly intrigued by this show. I too cannot understand the thought process behind hoarding but I always have the same question at the end of each episode…Why does hoarding have to equal uncleanliness? What does keeping newspapers from every day of the week for 30 years have to do with overflown toilets, trash on the floor and dead animals in your house?

I can’t make it through an episode of this show… I get all anxious and start cleaning… and I am already pretty tidy… it’s just too much for me to watch… and I’m in grad school for clinical psychology…. guess I won’t be treating anyone with this problem…

Hoarding doesn’t always equal uncleanliness, those are just the most shocking stories so that is what you see on the TLC, A&E and Animal Planet shows. Almost all of the hoarders on television are at a level that is severe and something in their life is at risk. There are plenty of “hoarders” who the shows do not show who are not hoarding garbage, but dolls, or newspapers, or cars etc. There have been a couple of younger hoarders who were not at a totally uncleanly place yet, but people in their lives feared for the worse and their jobs were at risk, or romantic relationships were at risk.
