I know you say that "trim" is gathered on one side, but if you look at the trim options in lace heaven, they are not all like that.
Yes... hobby lobby has lace ribbon... some walmarts even have lace ribbon
Try Joann Fabric or another fabric store near you. You will be looking for lace trim. It comes in different widths and not all of it is gathered. You can get straight edge lace trim.
I bought lace fabric from Joann fabrics and it didn't fray when we cut it. They did have some ribbon as well, but the actual fabric was cheaper to buy and cut into strips.

I'm looking for lace ribbon, so far all I have found is lace trim, which won't work because it's gathered on one edge. I found lace "hemming" but it's really expensive. I don't want to buy lace fabric and chop it into strips because I think it would probably fray or just not look right.
Does anyone know what I am talking about? I've checked the craft stores and I've looked online- nothing.
It's hard for me to believe it doesn't exist!
