I sent a save the date only because the officiant's deposit was due at the same exact time we were mailing them out and we had some extras. So I handwrote a note on the back and included the check in the envelope. I wasn't going to send an invitation (it honestly would have never occurred to me), but our venue coordinator said it's REALLY poor etiquette not to! I didn't send one to any other vendors, though; they'll all be working during the reception.
I dont think it is needed. He should know the date that he is officiating an event.

so our officiant is a minister, but not of a church we attend. He was my brothers and my elementry school teacher. He married my mom to her second husband. He held service for my brothers funeral. He was the only person I wanted to marry us. He is and I'm happy about that! we are inviting he and his wife to the reception after if they would like to come. I'm of course going to send an invititation. but do I send a save the date?
