We had our Christmas lunch at work today and got into the discussion about gifts from Santa. I was suprised to find myself in the minority here so I thought I would turn to the hive and see what everyone else did.
In our house all of the gifts were ALWAYS wrapped regardless of who they came from our parents or Santa but what im finding out is that most people wrap gifts from mom and dad but keep santa's presents unwrapped and displayed under the tree for all to see. i was surprised to see that 3 of us out of probably 15 people wrapped their gifts from santa while the rest left them unwrapped.
So hive - whats the norm for you?
on a side note: my coworker said he and his wife had this discussion not too long ago and he lost that battle - he always had santa gifts wrapped and his wife never did. haha. So i had to turn to my husband and ask him since its nothing we have ever discussed. (HA i found something we never discussed before marriage! - and never thought of discussing since i didn't know not wrapping was a thing) luckily his family wrapped, so no discussion necessary.
Watch any Christmas movie and all of the gifts in Santa's sack are WRAPPED! Polar Express, Nightmare Before Christmas, Elf...etc etc!
What the heck? No wrapping? This is news to me.
The elves always wrap the presents!!!!
Gifts from santa were always out and set up (in the case of electronics or playmobile sets) on the fireplace for us. Only things "hidden" were those in our stockings. Gifts from "santa" to my parents/grandparents were always wrapped and under the tree though.
Santa's gifts are wrapped but he uses different paper than Mom. Mom uses an elegant theme every year and Santa uses traditional bright red and green papers.
Santa never wrapped our gifts. Other gifts from my parents/siblings/etc were wrapped. It was funner that way because we would get up in the middle of the night and see what Santa brought us and then try to put it all back the way we found it so we wouldn't get caught! It was also interesting to figure out which pile of toys belonged to who. (my brothers was easy, but usually my sister and I would find one destinctive thing in our piles to figure out which was hers and which was mine)
I had this exact conversation at lunch! My friend said Santa doesn't wrap presents at their house and I thought that was completely weird, I'd never heard of it! However, I told her it was a smart idea on their part because I can remember (in my older years) my parents staying up until the wee hours of the morning wrapping presents from Santa...
But to answer your question, Santa always wrapped presents in our house. When we have children Santa will probably wrap then too. I think unwrapping presents is a huge part of Christmas morning... I loved unwrapping just as much as the actual gift when I was little!
@julies1949: YES! We made sure of that too. He also used different gift tags with different writing on them!
Not wrapping is totally foreign to me. Everyone that I know always had wrapped gifts from Santa. Hell, I STILL get wrapped gifts from Santa!
@julies1949: Haha my parents did that too! And his handwriting was in cursive and mom and dad's was in moms handwriting =]
Some gifts from Santa were "displayed" for us on Christmas morning unwrapped, but most of the gifts, including those from Santa, were all wrapped.
@julies1949: lol! Yes!
I just asked my FI and apparently he got no presents from his parents (lol) and they were ALL from Santa and unwrapped!
Maybe this has something to do with where you live.... maybe do a spin off of your own post about where you live and how santa delivers them!
@julies1949: Smart! it all comes down to the paper - that exactly how i found out about santa :(
Santa didn't wrap my gifts growing up...but I was an only child.
Santa wrapped gifts for FI...but he has a younger sister.
Same with my mom and dad: Santa never wrapped gifts for mom, buy my dad (who is one of seven) ALWAYS received wrapped gifts from Santa.
This is one of those age-old debates, and I'm sure it'll get messy when FI and I have kids! It's like asking if you're a Red Sox or Yankees fan...
Mom and Dad's presents were wrapped- but Santa's were unwrapped and they were the first thing we saw when we came downstairs in the morning! I miss Santa!
Santa never brought presents really. He filled the stockings with little cheap toys, pens pencils, candies, socks underware and stuff. Mom and Dad always bought the real, big presents and they were always wrapped. FI on the other hand, got Santa presents that were unwrapped, but as his mom has said, it was usually the stuff that was hard to wrap!
Half the fun of watching kids on Christmas is watching them tear into some wrapping paper!
I think it's the cutest thing. Clearly...we will be wrapping/our parents wrapped. BIG awkward things (like bikes, piano, bookbag type things) were left unwrapped, but everything else? Totally wrapped.
And like a PP, Santa and Mom wrapped in different papers. Lol.
We had it both ways, there was some years where everything was wrapped but others where things from santa werent wrapped. I dont have any kiddos to get santa gifts for but my sister has two boys and she doesnt wrap gifts from santa. I like it better not wrapped.
Sorry I hit NO too quickly .. I was thinking "well obviously thats the ELVES job" but my actual answer should have been Yes
Santa always wrapped gifts! Half the fun is not knowing what it is before you open! Like PPs Santa used different wrapping paper, and had different handwriting than my mom and dad!
Growing up, we always had our Santa presents unwrapped & gifts from our parents were wrapped. Now that I am a Mother of a 3 yr. old, I always wrap his Santa presents. It's just so fun to watch him get up & rip open all the presents!
@CanadianMermaid: Hahahaha I love it! You just made me laugh out loud at work!
He wraps in his own special paper unless it is something big like a bike, power wheel or a dollhouse etc.
My husband and I have had this discussion. My gifts from Santa were ALWAYS unwrapped, that was the difference between presents from Santa and presents from parents. Although, I was an only child so the gifts didn't have to be labeled with my name or anything.
When DH was growing up his gifts from Santa were always wrapped with his name on them, and he always recognized his parents' handwriting, and often recognized the wrapping paper. Flaw in the system.
When we have children, I want to do it my way, LOL!
ETA: I am wondering, though, how to choose which gifts Santa gives and which gifts we give. When I was a child the big, good gifts always came from Santa. I'm not sure if I want Santa to get all the credit for the amazing gifts, hahaha!
They are wrapped!!! That takes the fun out of presents if they are unwrapped!
Hahaha... we just had this conversation at work too! My favorite response was that OF COURSE Santa wraps the gifts--his paper always has little Santas all over it and that's how you know it's from him.
Yep. Gifts were always wrapped, even the ones "from Santa."
In my family they were wrapped but Santa also brought the big gifts like bikes etc. which would be displayed under the tree. One year I asked for only one thing on my list and it was left unwrapped under the tree I think for the effect. Our big gift to SD from Santa will not be wrapped but all her movies, toys, clothes, and video games will be wrapped.
@Miss Longcoat: DH just told me this one! He made me find Santa paper at the store for that reason. I had never heard that.
Santa's presents are wrapped but by Mommy! My little brother must have been about 5-6 when he asked why santa and mommy had the same wrapping paper and hand writting, and bless my mother she didn't bat an eye & told him that Santa doesn't have time to wrap them all so she does it after he drops them off.
I have never heard of not wrapping any gifts, ever, off anyone! You crazy people!
@Miss Sorbet: We had stuff like that happen. We always left notes/cookies for Santa and he had Papa's handwritting.
Haha this is too funny! I never even considered Santa NOT wrapping presents!
Like many PPs, our gifts from Santa were always wrapped in different wrapping paper and with different tags/writing. My mom would write the tags from Santa in super messy, kid-like letters (like, backward S's, etc.). Santa even wrapped all the gifts in our stockings.
I always knew that all my gifts were from my parents so they didnt have to present the gifts from santa differently. I plan to let my kids know that the gifts are from us and that santa is a ficitional character.
All gifts were wrapped. If it was from Santa, it said Santa on the gift tag!
