I need some help from you ladies! Basically I’d like to know if the things I’m planning are too formal for our event!
To give you an idea, here are the things we’re set on for our April ’13 event:
– Ceremony at 4
– Cocktail hour with at least 1 tray-passed hor d’oeuvre and other food displays around. Beer, Wine, 2 Signature cocktails, fancy water, lemonade, iced tea.
– Dinner is served around 6. It will be a buffet of Greek food where the guests serve themselves.
– I am wearing an organza or tulle ballgown with a cathedral-length veil (I love this style, and i’m sticking with it despite its formality).
THIS historic house is our venue, and I love it! We are having ceremony and reception in the rose garden, and people can explore the historic house during cocktail hour and after dinner.
I wanna know if long chiffon bridesmaid dresses will look out-of-place in regards to the formality of our event!
Also… can we go with tuxes? Or just suits w/ vests?

Your event seems pretty formal to me, so I don’t thing long dresses would be out of place at all. You have a few elements that are less formal: earlier ceremony, buffet serving, etc., but the aesthetic of your event, including your dress, is pretty formal.
And for a late afternoon event, he can certainly wear a tux if he prefers, but a dress suit is also fine.

Anyone else wanna chime in?

I think long chiffon gowns would be absolutely lovely with everything else you’ve described! And your guys could go either way on tuxes or suits. Personally I’d go with suits.

I think the long bridesmaids dresses will be more appropriate than knee-length ones. You will be dressed very formally and so should they.
However, I think a tux would be a bit overboard for an afternoon wedding. They are more appropriate for evening wear. So a nice suit with a waistcoast/vest would be perfectly fine (and the groomsmen will probably appreciate it, too).

I got married there!!!! The Darlington house is BEAUTIFUL and you will love it!! We actually had a formal, evening wedding there, guys in tuxes, but the girls were in knee length. Honestly, either long or short will work! Its a venue that is as formal or causal as you make it! These were my girls (guest photos):
Here were the groomsman in their tuxes (and me!). I had a cathedral veil too! You will not regret it! It feels so bridal! Here’s another guest photo!

I think the long chiffon BMs dresses would look very elegant and would not be out of place at your venue.
As far as the guys, I don’t have strong feelings either way. Which means you should go with what you want! 🙂
