My fiancee and I are planning a very small wedding (30 people) in midtown Atlanta. We want to keep our budget at a strict 5k.
However, we have fallen in love with a $1600 venue (for both ceremony and reception), where you have to use their bar service and a short list of preferred caterers (they all seem great, but maybe a bit pricey?)
We want a brunch reception, and here’s how we’re saving money so far –
No DJ/band – iPod only.
I am making my own dress and I don’t think it will be more than $150 for supplies (it’s simple.)
No flowers – we are making paper flowers.
No photographer – we will be buying some lomo cameras and film for everyone to use though (maybe $150?)
Given these circumstances, do you think it’s possible to throw an elegant 30 person brunch wedding for no more than 5k?

Definitely, though you might want to see about getting a photographer instead of relying entirely on your guests–check local colleges, Craigslist, etc.

Without even the slightest doubt! Do post your dress in progress – I soooo envy creative people.

I agree, I wouldn’t trust my guests with pictures.. put up a sign at a local art school and tell them they can use the photos in their portfolio, they’ll probably give you a great deal

Honestly, I think you might go a bit over. Your food and bar will be expensive, even for 30 guests, so you need to get some estimates for those. Also, you will need to estimate how much it will cost you to get the film developed. What about invitations? Are you going to have a cake? What about your reception set up, i.e., tables, chairs, flatware, dishes, napkins, etc. You need to make a list of everything you will need and then plug in some numbers. I have been using the budget calculator at weddingchannel.com. It has helped immensely. I suggest plugging in your numbers and then modify the items as needed. You will have items on there that you will want to delete, so they are taken out of your budget.

@noritake22: Yes, I think getting quotes is really of the utmost importance. I am clueless as to even what kind of range I can expect for food – I know alcohol will be around $700 or less. The venue includes tables and chairs, but I will need to rent dishes and flatware and napkins from the caterer. I think I am also making my own linens, but if not I will need to rent those too.
Film developing costs is something I have not thought of, thanks.
I know not having a photographer is very unorthodox, but I’m okay with it. When I look at wedding photos I feel nothing … I’m just not interested in having the shoe shot, the ring shot, the first look shot, etc. We will probably do a love session for our 1st anniversary though.
