I change the channel on that too! It used to make me cry but I've gotten past that and am just slightly annoyed.
Yeah, it's basically the saddest commercial ever. I just hug one of our animals after I see it.
That one makes me so sad! But so does the new Pedigree commercial because it reminds me of the day I went to the city shelter to pick out my dog and seeing the hundreds of other dogs sitting in cages :(
I feel bad for the animals, but I change the channel because Sarah MacLachlan bugs me and I hate that stupid song. Also, those tshirts they are trying to give away are ugly. They should stop making the damn shirts and use the money to actually help animals.
Same goes for the occasions when I've accompanied my sister to the pet store to buy food and you have to pass the lonely puppies on the way in that are one per glassed in box (with no apparant ventilation) that they want a small fortune for. The last time we were there it was awful listening to the crying and a couple had broken legs, which is not good in that type of environment.
@Selene: OMG, what pet stores are you going to with the broken legged dogs!? That is so horrible!
I definitely don't buy anything from them and my sister has decided to shop elsewhere (for other reasons mainly but that bothered her as well). But it was a small town independent store, definitely not a chain.
I agree with noritake! All the pets in the local Petsmart look healthy and happy (though a little sad perhaps).
@selene22-Were the dogs with broken legs rescue dogs that they took and helped?
@op- yes I have to change the channel too. It breaks my hurt. We rescued a dog and so when I see it I think of her past life.
I cant watch that commercial AT ALL!!! and I think I'm still a good fur-mommy... so no, I don't think it makes you bad!!
I can't watch it either. But, if it gets one person to adopt vs. buying from a mill....
And of course it does not make you a bad fur mom! It means you have a heart...thus, you are a great fur mom!
I agree it makes you a good fur-mom! I can barely watch that commericial without tearing up and giving extra hugs and kisses to my kitty.
Even one of male co-workers has to turn the channel when that commercial comes on. I'm not a weepy/crying type at commercials, but that one makes me tear up every time.
EVERY single time that commercial comes on my daughter asks if we can get another dog....LOL. It's depressing to think of so many animals being abandoned but we are definitely a one dog household.
I CAN"T watch those :( I adopted a shelter dog- but I feel so bad I can't save EVERY dog in the world.
i can't watch it either, it is so sad it makes me wanna get 100 more pets! i just dont understand how someone can treat anmials so badly
I can't watch those commercials they either make me cry or put me in an upset mood for the rest of the day :-(
If I was rich all my extra money would go to the SPCA but I am broke and so I can't right now!
I do the same thing! Or else I close my eyes, plug my ears and sing, "lalalalalalalalala" at the top of my lungs... like a child! I think it means that we do care about animals and that we just don't want to see those images. That doesn't mean I don't do what I can. I've always adopted animals from shelters and I donate regularly. I'd love to volunteer, but I'm not strong enough (I'd get too attached)... actually, my apartment isn't large enough. Because I tend to want to adopt EVERY pet that I come across that needs a home.
You're not the only one :] I change the channel every single time! I can't handle watching that commercial... so sad.
No it's just plain sad... anytime that commercial comes on my fiance turns the channel to keep me from bawling.
It is a tactic used to stir up emotions and almost "bribe" money out of people... I learned that as a marketing major. It works. you feel so guilty for the animals you almost feel obligated to send money or feel like a bad person yourself.
I HATE that commercial.
I guess that I've become heavily desensitized after seeing images, videos, and stories of much, MUCH worse animal abuse than say the legless pets who are clearly on their way to finding good homes, after fourteen years of vegetarianism and nine of veganism (try clicking on related links to the Sarah McLachlan video on youtube). I hope the commercials inspire more people to adopt and not perpetuate the cycle of domesticated pet overpopulation and abuse, where people view pets as commodities to be bought and sold at a premium, but I also hope too many people don't shy away from them--there are far more horrific instances of animal abuse that occur every minute in every country and I wish more people would open their eyes to them.
Yeah, I change the channel and grab one of my dogs and squeeze. Which makes the dogs hate it too. They're like, "Oh shit, not again."
yeah... those aren't anything compared to peta video's. I would have to agree with that!
I just can't stand the thought of anyone hurting an animal on purpose for no reason at all.
So sick =(
Oh God, neither FH nor I can watch that commercial. We both have to change the channel when it comes on. I wouldn’t be surprised if our downstairs neighbors could hear the shouts of “grab the remote! Grab the remote!” when that song comes on.
When our “well-loved” (read: incredibly SPOILED) cat is being fussy because she isn’t getting her way (yes she verbally whines and pouts when she doesn’t get what she wants! lol), I often tell her she should call Sarah McLaughlin and tell Sarah her troubles.
I can’t watch any sort of abuse to animals, it makes me very sick to my stomach. I know it happens, and I do what I can to help – I don’t need to watch it to know what horrible, evil things some people do to innocent animals. :(
I can't watch it either - we scramble for the remote. We will adopt a dog someday, but we can't just yet b/c our house is not big enough. And we have maxed out with 2 cats. We donate to 2 local animal organizations and try our best, but we can't watch that sad commercial.
I hate those commercials too. They make me tear up.
I always point to it and tell my spoiled fur babies: "See how good you have it? Some puppies are not as lucky as you."
And then they remember how great their lives are and stop complaining that they don't have enough toys and don't get to sleep in the people bed and they say puppy prayers for all those poor animals.

No matter how much you love animals or how many pets you may have, does it make you a horrible person if you absolutely have to change the channel when the Sarah MacLachlan ASPCA commercial comes on? I can understand why they air it, but it is beyond depressing.
