I’ve got bride brain and just can’t tell what’d look really nice, look odd, or go completely unnoticed. Our colors are eggplant/dark purple with pops of grey/silver and pops of pale aqua/robin’s egg. Our reception is outside in a pretty lush italian terrace-looking area. We’re doing eggplant tableclothes & napkins and a mix of silver tall candelabras or dark purple flower centerpieces in silver vases. Our venue provides all plates, glasses, silverware, tables, and chairs free of charge.
If we want to use their black seat cushions with their wood chairs, we can for free, but there is no black in the wedding (guys are in nice grey suits, bridesmaids are in grey/silver, nothing is black). I’d pictured having eggplant seat cushions, but found out that they’re at least $3.50/cushion to rent. That seems so pricey to me seeing as our linens are only $16 each table. But we can spend the money for the cushions if using the free ones would throw off the look of the reception tables.
What do you think would look best in pictures and in person and work best for our guests? – no seat cushions? free black seat cushions? pay up for seat cushions in wedding colors?

I personally think no seat cushions would look best but 4+ hours on a wooden chair sounds painful. Won’t the chairs be tucked in or covered by butts for pictures? I think the guests’ comfort is worth using the free cushions. Nobody is going to look at them and say “it’s a shame they’re not eggplant.”

If i were you, i would go somewhere and make a place setting. They dont have to know you arent renting from them, that could still be”to be determined” status. Or go to the venue and try it out. I hoenstly think that Black wouldnt be horrible and its kind of a neutral. BUT i am one of those matchy matchy and hate black at weddings, i would just use the wood chairs!

To give a bit more context. The pics below are at my venue.
This pic shows the free chairs for my venue (but with some rented cushions- not the color I’d rent). The chargers, silverware, & glassware are the same as I’d have. It seems like for details shots, chair cushions do show quite a bit and it might stand out (to me at least) if they’re black.
here’s another wedding at our venue showing the chairs and that seat cushions are visible. in fact, I haven’t been able to find pics from our venue without seat cushions . . . I wonder if that’s because ppl really do need them. The reception area won’t get dark until 8:30/9, so nobody’ll be dancing until then. The venue is also very much known for excellent food and has no reception end time, so it seems that guests would stay more in their seats for the whole dinner (7-9pm) & then only get up once dancing starts at 8:30/9. so maybe cushions are needed & that’s why every wedding I can find online there has free or rented cushions?
This is another wedding at our venue that used chiavari chairs. We aren’t getting chiavari chairs, but you at least see the feel of the reception area and see that the seat cushions are pretty visible and noticeable in details pre-dinner shots.
Nikkimcq: smart idea. I just have a hard time picturing the black cushions or figuring out if no cushions would be too uncomfortable for 2 hrs. I’ll see if the rental company will do a mockup for me.

Since the tablecloths are eggplant, no one is going to notice this. Honestly they only would if your table cloths were white, and even then you probably would only notice them in detail photos such as the one you posted above. I say free cushions.

Shkragoldfish: hmm i ssee what you really mean by the cushiions. I personally love the look of a bare chair. But get what you mean with the sore bottom. I think because they are prtty minimal you could get away with the black. They would probably hide nicely against the dark purple table cloth. Go with freee!

Shkragoldfish: use the black ones. i had a similar color scheme to you and never considered this, and my photos came out great! (our default seat cushions were white, even though there wasn’t white in the color scheme)
there are very few pictures of our chairs in our 900 edited images, and if it makes you feel any better, after the fact you so won’t care about this! $3.50 per cushion to rent is outrageous.

looking at your photo, i don’t think it would be worth it to spend the extra rental money on plum cushions…nor do i think you should force your guests to sit in hard chairs for hours! definitely go black and don’t look back! haha!

I think you will be fine with dark purple tablecloths, dark wood chairs. I would bet you don’t even notice the black seat cushions, especially when people’s butts are in them. Definitely have cushions though on those.

Use the black cushions. If you are concerned about the pre- reception table shots, have the photographer remove the seat cushions from one side of the table.

black… it’s a neutral.. i really don’t think it would stand out that much against eggplant!
