@missmarchmommy: It's just a theme and nothing is doomed. I think the theme is great.
I think it sounds cute! plus, the garden of eden was where everything was perfect, I say that's a good comparison for your marriage :)
If I'm being honest I do think it is strange...it's not just superstition, it is a biblical story about how sin began. Sounds like an odd wedding theme to me. I think you can have a garden theme involving apples without calling it the garden of eden, which is where all the negative connotations come from.
I'm not religious, but I have to admit I'm not a huge fan. A general garden theme, sure, but not this one.
i kind of dig where both sides are coming from but i honestly can not think of a theme this is harder than i thought
I don't think you should worry about the ending - I think it sounds like an enchanting theme!
Garden weddings are fine, and Harvest themes are fine including apples. Eden with apples doesn't work, because if you know the story of the Garden of Eden...the result of eating the forbidden fruit was to be banned from the Garden, and to suffer the consequences of sin. I get the made for each other concept, but this theme needs to be tweaked to depict Paradise found, and not the beginning of Paradise lost...
Why not? The garden was paridice untill eve ate the apples... You could put up a sign that says please don't touch the fruit. I say if you like it the hell with what everyone elce says. I also love the idea of serving ribs. Is pretty And interesting
My first thought was that everyone was naked in the garden of eden, how awkward! But, since you dodn't seem to want to include that in your theme, that should be fine. Could you maybe do an enchanted garden theme? My Shakespeare is rusty, but what about A Midsummer Night's Dream or something? That was a case of meant for each other right?
Also, this probably won't help you much, but not every theology has negative assosiations with the Garden of Eden. I'm LDS/Mormon and we believe that Eve made the deliberate decision to transgress by eating the fruit, even though she knew that if they did they would have to leave the garden. It was the only way they could progress and have children. (This also points out that I'm a little biased, I have some pretty positive assosiations with it). I love the idea of two people, made for each other, setting out to the great big world together.
Whatever you decide, it'll be beautiful with the garden decorations, and I don't think your guests will think too hard about the details of it all. Good luck!
P.S. I think the "don't touch the fruit" idea is so clever and cute!
@missmarchmommy: Why do you have to have a theme? My theme is 'wedding', and yours can be 'vow renewal'. Sure I have a color scheme, but that's it! You don't have to have one.

as yall know im actually here for a vow renewal but i never got a wedding (shot gun nuptuals) annnnny way I want this to be as close to a wedding as i can get without being "ettiquetely" incorrect.
my theme Idea was a Garden of Eden theme I figuer I could get some nice vines and put them all over everything. Centerpieces that are little trees with Apples hanging from them telling the guests where to sit.... sounded kinda cool until....
someone pointed out that we know how the story of the Garden of Eden story ended (with them being banished from the Garden for listening to a serpent telling them to eat from the tree of knowledge long after that they had to sons and Kane killed Abel)
does this sound like a silly superstition I love the Idea of me being made especially for him. I guess like I was made from his rib * shrug*
