so today fi and i decided to take our girls down to the lake. we live in a neighborhood where we are lucky enough to have lake access, but we rarely get to use it as we are both so busy and on different shifts… anyways, my lab/white shepherd mix (vegas) went swimming last year a few times but she was just a pup and mostly scared of the water. our other dog, a german/aussie shepherd mix has never been swimming! so in they went after the tennis ball… (after a bit of coaxing from fi and i)… and much to my surprise reno is an excellent swimmer! and vegas…. not so much…. she swims with her paws out of the water and splashes everywhere like shes drowning! (which she isnt)…. reno on the other hand is so graceful… doesnt splash at all, she just kind of glides! its just hilarious to watch the two of them swimming together! do your furbabies swim?

I have an English Bulldog and my poor baby would sink like a stone. We have a lot of dog parks in where we live. B/c she weighs so much she’s too big for the small dog portion so we go on the big side. All the labs and other dogs are usually showing off jumping after toys. My pup lays in the shallow area and drinks the water 🙂

My Cairn looooves swimming at the beach, but he has a nasty habbit of biting at the water as he goes, almost like he’s trying to clear to way for himself. It’s hillarious at the time, but it usually results in him dry heaving the whole way home, so not so much fun for mommy.

@Petunia123: We have a bulldog too : ) He’s half English half American so he’s a little more athletic.. but not great! Our pup will swim a little bit in a lake or a pool with steps where he can walk in, and only if you are right there and he is swimming to you. But he definitely won’t jump into water. He fell into my in-law’s pool once and totally just sunk. My husband had to jump in fully clothed to rescue him from 4 feet of water!

fiance has a golden retreiver, he likes water he can see through lol. He likes shallow creeks he can splash around in, but he doesn’t like lakes or rivers because he can’t touch the bottom, no matter how much coaxing we do, if it’s deeper than like his “ankles” he won’t come in!

When I first got my dog he was afraid of the water but within a year or so he turned into Rusty-potomus. He was a great swimmer (though was terrible at getting a stick/ball without halfway drowning himself) and would wallow in anything that remotely resembled water. He’d even climb in my horse’s water trough and just soak on hot days. 😀
My husband’s dog, on the other hand… Well, Vegas isn’t alone. 😉 He would do great if he would just keep his paws in the water! As is, he usually just wades.

Surprisingly, my lab mix doesn’t seem to like the water very well! But we’re working on her! My parent’s lab and Shihzhu like to swim though.

I have a lab/shepherd/who knows mix. I rescued him from a shelter and he was very skittish when I first got him. We used to go to a dog park all the time with a river. He’d walk in an play, but would never swim. One day it was flooded from storms, so the bank was under a few inches of water. I (stupidly!!!) nudged him in and he kind of fell of the bank. He swam just fine, but has never swam since. I’d never, ever push a dog into water ever again, but I didn’t really know better then. He will wade in the water and play, but that’s it.

My Dogs love to swim! I have a Black Lab and a Husky Mix and they are both excellent swimmers. My lab loves to jump off the dock at the lake going full speed. I am sure that if you have a lab you know exactly what I mean! My Husky is getting better but still does not go out too far from shore unless we are with him.

Where was Carson City?! lol!
My husky/yorkie/papillon mix (got her dna tested!) LOVES to swim! My sis has an aussie and he is only a wader.
Here is a pic of my girl @ our honeymoon in Michigan. We got her a life jacket and a special floatie toy!

Ginny HATES water. So I don’t know whether or not she can swim.

Mine will wade in first and then if you’re out there then she’ll come swimming to you. I don’t think she has the guts to go jumping in on her own or even go out and swim without someone else being out there. She’s tries to swim out to my Fiance on his kayak when we’re at the beach lots of times, but I never let her get out to far because I’m afraid a rip tide might take her or something.

I don’t have a dog, but my mom’s dog LOVES to go to the lake near her house and swim. She lives in the country and she lets him run around alone and he came back one day just soaking wet. We had to figure out where he goes.LOL He loves it, but he’s a black lab.

Future Mother-In-Law maltese doggie “cheezy” LOVES the water. She barks at it when we’re in and aren’t letting her in. She is a GREAT swimmer! She barks at the fountain when we have it up, actually she barks at everything, so that doesnt count. lol
