My FI has a dark navy, grey and a tan suit, but no black. Random isn't it? The first suit I ever got was a black one.
My SO has 5-7 suits, and I think 2 are black. He also has a few grey, a blue one, and a tan one. I might be missing one though.
My FI has probably 10 suits...several navy, a couple gray, tan, navy pinstriped...but none of them are black! I think I need to encourage him to get a black one now...
Fi just bought one for a funeral and it was gray. He never wears them to work so didn't really have one.
I've had a couple different jobs that require suits and always have had a couple of black ones. Just seems like the obvious choice, but I think it's a little different for men. Women can dress black suits down a bit more then men can, so I think a gray or navy or more versatile.
He doesn't own any suits, but then again, he's only 22 and he's never needed one.

Just curious, FH agreed to be an usher for an upcoming wedding but needs to wear a black suit. According to the bride, all men have black suits so she picked this color. FH has a bunch but none are black! just curious if this is common.
