Driving to work I heard Brad Paisley's "I'm Still A Guy", specifically the lyrics about holding a purse at the mall.

Well love makes a man do some things he ain't proud of
And in a weak moment I might walk your sissy dog, hold your purse at the mall
But remember, I'm still a guy

It has always irked me when I see men carrying their woman's purses.  Honestly, I've never seen a man holding a purse that didn't have a sheepish "I'm sorry guys" or look of shame/embarrassment on his face.  And I make it a point to notice his expression because it bothers me so much.

I'm not talking about those situations where you're carrying a ton of stuff and he grabs your purse to help lighten the load.  I'm talking about when you are shopping or walking along and he is right beside you holding your purse for you.

Do you make your man carry your purse for you?

Yes and no. When we're shopping and walking around I will carry it but if I need to sort through jeans or something and he's there I will ask him to hold it and he does it without complaint. I don't think he cares one way or the other about it. If he said no I would just put it on the ground.

If I'm in a shoe store or someplace where he knows I have to touch everything, he'll offer to hold it for me. Smile

He'll hold it for me if I ask him to hold it for a minute while I'm doing something, but he doesn't just walk around carrying my purse! Why in the world would I want him to do that?

ETA: I would vote no, because I wouldn't want him to.

He will if I am somewhere and don't want to carry my purse for a second (if I need a free hand, bathroom, etc.) But other than that...no.

I have never asked him to and wouldn't consider asking him to.  If I don't want to carry it then I shouldn't take it, but that has never happened either.  He has asked me to throw his wallet and/or keys in my bag, but I cannot think of one occasion that he has ever carried my purse.  He would grab everything else out of my hands though.

He offers to hold it for me when I am looking through racks of clothes or trying stuff on.  He even offers to hold onto the clothes I want to try on while I'm still shopping!  So sweet :)

I have asked him to hold it while I go to the bathroom, look for a clothing size, etc.  He HATES it.  Most of the time he won't do it.

My Purse doubles as a backpack so when my laptop and books are in it it's really heavy and he will carry itI with out being asked. If I am using my Purse like a purse...then not so much

my FI always offer to hold my purse/coat/shopping bags/etc when we are out shopping.

i remember on our first trip to an outlet mall, we were in 'coach' and they were having a labour day sale.  i wanted so many things.  we walked around the store with my FI carrying everything i wanted, 4 purses, 3 wallets, etc.  a couple of girls walked by and saw him standing there like a coat rack and commented, "what are we doing wrong?".  i just smiled back and said, "maybe it's what i'm doing right". Wink

If we're at the store and I'm really getting a workout trying on coats or going through a clearance rack he'll just take everything out of my hands and hold it for me, purse included. He doesn't walk around with it on or anything...

HAHA!  I love that song, and my husband refuses to hold my purse, like ever, except for MAYBE a split second if I'm trying something on and dont want to go to the fitting room or need to pick something up.  And even that is rare, cause he doesn't go shopping with me cause "that's what my girlfriends are for!".

My husband will offer to hold my purse for me if I'm doing something where my hands are full or he can tell I'm struggling, but I can't imagine ever even wanting him to just walk down the street carrying it for me.

he's probably held it less than 10 times through our relationship. the only time I ever need him to is if I'm putting on a coat and carrying something else at the same time (because I just don't have enough hands for that) and he's taken it from me so I could put on the coat/sweater/whatever easier.

I would never have him carry it around-- if I can't carry it myself then I shouldn't have brought it.

No. plain and simple. I voted yes but only temporarily or for a moment. It has happened that ill need to use both hands and not have my bag on my shoulder for a moment, like to tie my shoes properly or move something or whatever. But in most cases I will set it on a near by surface rather than ask him to hold it. Only if hte floor is my only option will I even ask. When it does happen he makes it a point to hold it in a very awkward not natural looking way with a look that says "ohhhhh my god, i cant believe im holding a purse". :) But!!!! in answer to your question no i do not ask him to hold it just to make him hold it while we walk around or are out or something.

He will for a few minutes while I look through/for something. It doesn't bother him, I think he's more perplexed by how heavy the darn thing is!

    @delirium.megans: LOL!! I can imagine that 100%

Now that I think about it, I've never asked him to hold my purse or shopping bags, even when I'm struggling with things. It just never occurs to me to ask him to help lol. But he does offer to help every time.

Hmm the only time he holds my purse is when I go into the restroom and he is waiting for me outside.

Haha, thank goodness I've never seen that look on DH's face. I don't think he cares. I mean, he's not gonna hold it forever, but if my hands are full or I need them free, I usually just shove it his way and he takes it. Same with all the clothes I pick up. He'll only start to complain if I am wondering around with my hands empty, then I'll take some stuff back.

@delirium.megans:  Haha, same here. He "tucks" it s that it's mostly invisible to bystanders. LOL.

He'll hold it if I ask him while I do something else quick (shift clothes/my bags to another arm,  run to the bathroom, tie my shoe, etc) but I'd never ask him to actually carry it for me. I also hate purses, so I just carry a small wallet. Maybe that's why he agrees - it has no strap and it's easily "tucked."

He always offers if I am doing something at a store like trying on a jacket or shoes. He holds it and then as soon as I am done I take it back, I don't want him stuck with it forever. If I have a lot of things I am trying to carry I give him the other things and keep my purse myself. I would never have him just hold it while we walk around, that is weird IMO.

Fun story about this: I used to work at a sports stadium and I was checking bags in the club seats. A couple walks in and the guy hands me a purse to check, I check it and hand it back to the women. She took it...and then handed it right back to him! And he was looking to take it! My mind was blown for a good half hour after that. My coworkers and I just couldn't understand.

I voted yes but only temporarily/for a moment. I'll only ask him if I need both hands to do something and I don't see a clean/safe surface to put it down.

He'll hold it for like 10 seconds then start holding it towards me so I'll hurry up and take it LOL!

He will only if I have to tie my shoe or something. He doesn't like holding it at all because guys aren't supposed to hold purses. I made him hold it once when I went to the bathroom and he said he felt awkward.

@purple_orchids:  It's like built in, holding purses=awkward. Oh yeah, FI also holds my purse when I go to the bathroom, but only ask him once in a while. Usually it's cuz he goes to the bathroom at the same time!

If we're out shopping and I'm looking through racks, he'll always take my purse (he'll actually wrestle it away from me telling me he wants to hold it) and he'll also carry things I want to try on.  If we're shopping for my mom he'll carry her options as well, or our coats.  Not that he's my pack mule - he's always taking things away from me to carry!  It was probably our first fight because I'm an "independent woman!" and it was REALLY hard for me to get used to a man helping me in that way.

I think the only time I ask him to hold my purse is, like, if we're in a store and I'm trying on a jacket for a second with him standing right there. Otherwise... I don't know, there's never any reason to for me.

@DaneLady:  Mine does the same exact thing. I tell him it's the only reason I want him to come shopping with me :P

I kinda think it's silly when guys WON'T hold their girl's purse or do it with the "sheepish" look -- what are they being sheepish about? Is it because it's a ~purse~ and therefore it's ~girly~ and he's afraid people will think he's not MANLY? Is it because they're afraid of looking whipped? I just see it as doing a favor for their girl, helping her out, etc. In the same regard, I carry FI's coat and clothes he wants to try on when he's shopping, simply because it's easier to shop with two arms free than it is to try to manage fifty million things and still try to look through racks.
