OMG no!!! My company would not tolerate any of that at all. I have never heard of anything like this and I would be so annoyed if I were you too!
It just started happening! I'm not sure if our HR manager is gone or what is going on, but I've been pretty shocked that they allow it to continue as well. Our branch isn't doing too well right now so I can't really complain or it might bring unwanted attention on us or else I would definately be saying something!
This sounds like something that would happen in The Office not in real life!
Hah I know I just had to share because it seemed crazy to me too....I just needed to hear that this ISNT NORMAL.
I work in an office with only me and my boss but sometimes he will watch SNL skits then crack up and then call me over and have me watch them. I hate it because I feel like no matter what I have to laugh and sometimes they are just not funny.
I had to chime in because I have a co-worker who does this.... except it comes out of his mouth and not in the form of an e-mail. He constantly rants and raves about "illegal Mexicans, trashy neighbors across the street", as well as various insults about Catholicism, Judaism, Islam, and people on welfare.
I've only worked there a few months and he's gotten my blood boiling on several occasions. I've told him he is free to have his opinions, that is the beauty of this country, but that he runs a high risk of offending people. I have cut him off mid sentence saying it is not appropriate for the workplace, and walked away.. only for him to say (while I was still in ear-shot) "so let me finish what I was saying". I walked into his bosses office and shut the door and I was so steaming mad. His boss was way too passive to say anything and let the whole thing blow over.
I told a few people what happened (they were not surprised because I guess this has been happening for years and they just tolerate it) and I think he in turn confided in them. Our mutual co-worker said to him, "Nothing is stopping [HolyVowels] from going to HR and filing a complaint". Apparently this was news to him and he has since watched what he's said... but I CANNOT believe that my co-workers have been tolerating this for years. He was even having a conversation with one co-worker about welfare and "his tax dollars" and it just so happens that this person receives public assistance. Some people have NO FILTER and no common sense.
@bohemianbailie: Haha that is actually really funny! I can see that happening with my boss...he always thinks everything is soooo funny! lol.
@HolyVowels: It's hard to deal with hey! I hate people like that. We get a lot of racist comments through our offices and job sites all the time because most of our employees are old school white men from tiny northern towns (they aren't all like this, but a lot of them are). Sometimes I wish I could just scream enough is enough people...where has all your tolerance gone??
YES!!! I hate those emails. Especially the ones that talk about praying a lot and being a "real American". That is NOT okay. I usually delete any of these without even looking at them.
@mrs.peters.to.be: So does my boss! He used to send me joke emails but since I never responded he stopped but I did get an email from his wife asking me to vote for their dog in a Halloween costume contest.
OMG. I thought you were going to be venting about the yahoos who can't stay away from the damn "reply all" button when sending what should be a direct reponse to the sender, resulting in 50+ emails throughout the day in response to "My ____ book is missing from my office, has anyone seen it?" Those people KILL me. But YOUR co-workers? Yowza! That would NOT fly in my office, AT ALL.
I work in probably the most liberal office ever. I come from the corporate world of property management for very ritzy high rise buildings....to a construction company. If by 8:05 I haven't heard the f word then I think something must be wrong. We are a Human Resource nightmare. I enjoy it though :)

Hello Bees,
Maybe this is more of a rant than anything, but man oh man am I sick of stupid inter-office emails that are offensive. I'm not sure if it's a mix between the region I live in or the industry (oil & gas), but people in my company don't seem to understand what is work appropriate and what is not.
Take this week alone for an example. Earlier this week some girl sent around an email describing the difference between the average working joe and the average welfare joe. She finished her email by stating "if you support politicians who are in favour of welfare you are contributing to the down hill spiral of our country!" Her email was full of typos and mis informed information. I'm not meaning a political debate by this post, just my point that this seems a little ridiculous to bring into the work environment. Obviously in a company with over 500 people there will be differing views so why the hell would you ruin my day by spreading your garbage?
Now today it gets worse. We just had a famous CFL (Canadian Football League) player join our sales team after his retirement. There was a giant inter-office email stating this and welcoming him. Well someone replyed with a joke saying, "ya but did he actually play pro?" because they didn't like his former team. This alone was fine, but then a long line of emails ensued and included comments like, "haha ya now he's on the dark side," followed by, "is that a little racial?" when no one was even talking about race etc. etc. To make a long story short the email got a little racist toward the end because this new employee is black and these jokes kept coming! Not to mention we probably have all of about 20 employees out of 500 that aren't white. Way to welcome the guy!
I'm just mad that people are so stubbornt o the point they probably don't even realize they are hurting people's feeling or stepping out of line. I'm actually really surprised our HR hasn't stepped in like they have in the past. It's in our company policy and employee manual that this is strictly against our code of ethics and work practices.
Does anyone else experience stuff like this through inter-office email? I'm wondering how common it is?
