They don’t change your number. Your stuck with that for life, unless you go in to witness protection or are hideng from the FBI.

My moms card still has her madien name but my friend got a new one with her married name. So that part doesn’t matter?

I am going in next week to get my new card. 🙂

My number will stay the same, but it will have my new name on it. It’s mostly for tax and benefit purposes.

Your number stays the same. To use your new last name on your W-2 and for tax purposes you will need to get a new SSC, otherwise you’ll have to continue to use your maiden name as they all have to match.

By law you are required to get a card with your legal name. So you only need a new card if you change your name…and like it was said, number will stay the same.

Your number stays the same so they can keep track of you throughout your entire life.  It would never change unless you had someone else trying to use it, and it’s still pretty tough to change it!
