So we adopted a doggie from a local shelter just under three months ago. She was a stray on the street before she was picked up, so she wasn't totally house broken because she was really used to going wherever she felt like it. However, she knows that when we go outside, it's time to pee and poo. The second we get outside, she starts sniffing and does her thing.

She's crate trained and barely has any accidents in the house (she has a few on occasion, but she's getting better). However, she pees, and sometimes even poos, in her crate when we're gone all day. This is a new development, probably just within the last month. It happens a few times a week, and we just do NOT know what to do! She seems fine otherwise.

For water and food, we asked our vet, and researched a ton, on how much she should get. We thought that maybe we were giving her too much water, which we were. So we cut that down to the appropriate amount. The food amount was fine. But she still pees in her crate.

Her crate is big enough for her to stand up in and turn around, as recommended by the vet.

Does anyone have any opinions on why she does this? She's just over a year old, and is a maltese mix.

Have you taken her to the vet? She may have a urinary tract infection. Also, something may be stressing her out. I suggest that if you can, one of you go home mid-day to take her out. Maybe you can both take turns. She may just not be able to hold it that long.

Also.. do you have anything soft in the crate?  Like a blanket or a towel?  If so, you need to remove it until she learned to hold it.  Anything soft will absorb the pee, which means that she's not forced to sit in it.

But I second the opinion to get her checked for a UTI.  At a year old she should have no problem holding it for the duration of a normal work day.

Okay, thanks guys! Looks like someone's going to the vet this weekend! I've heard of that for cats, but never even considered it for our dog for some reason.

She used to have a soft bed in her crate, but we started to take it out when she peed for like the third time, and it didn't help the situation.

Unfortunately, both my husband and I work 40 mins one way from our home, so checking up on her mid-day isn't an option, which is why we adopted a dog that was old enough to hold it in all day (we were told she would be able to!).

    Thanks!

@Miss Chapstick: You might check around your neighborhood for someone to come in to let her out during the day. There are professional dog walkers. It shouldn't cost very much, if all they are doing is taking her out to potty once a day. Another thought, maybe she would enjoy a kong with some peanut butter in it. It would keep her busy and give her something else to do during the day when you are gone.

@noritake22: Thanks again! We actually bought her a kong and put peanut butter in it the first day we got her. We tried and tried, but she had zero interest in it. She's not one for toys, which is really bizarre, haha.
