    Probably not. I would board the dog at a place I trust that has the ability to transport my pup to our veterinary hospital if something happened, and would definitely cut my trip short if he took a turn for the worst, but that would be it.

    I don’t think so. If the dog isn’t sick he should be there when you get back, right? Or is there an issue with the dog being grumpy and/or uncomfortable with other care takers?

    @Ylluf:  Never.

    This is like asking if I would cancel a vacation because my parents were elderly but not sick. We can’t live our lives worried about “what ifs”.

    No. I would not put my life on hold because a dog OR human was just elderly but showed no signs of being ill or declining in health.

    @Ylluf:  That’s a tough one. We found out our dog was dying  of cancer after we came home from our Destination wedding. He died after surgery a few weeks later. That doggie was our baby. It was a shock.  We beat ourselves up over it. If I wasn’t close to these relatives I’d choose my pooch.

    @Ylluf:  No, I am lucky and my mom is able to watch Daisy for me. Now if my dog WAS sick, I would not plan a vacation until she was well again.

    If he was elderly but not sick, no way, but I’d probably look into vets offices that offer boarding to be on the safe side. That way knowledgeable people would see him every day and be able to note any suspicious symptoms and call me or treat him.

    @Ylluf:  No I would not cancel vacation.

    In 2009 my beloved dog died a perfect death (at home, we knew in advance) and a few weeks before we went to Europe for vacation. Couldn’t  have been better planned.  I still would have gone. At this point in life I’ve had many pets and their death is part of our lives.

    I’ll answer this but from a cat perspective. A few summers ago, my parents were planning to take my sister and I to Europe. We had an elderly cat at the time, and we had just moved to a new city. That moving process traumatized her so badly she nearly died… We had left her at my grandma’s house while everything got settled, and this was a place she had been babysat at MANY times in her life with no issues, she was family. But something about seeing the empty house and then being dropped off without us was way too much for her. She gave up and didn’t eat for days like she thought we had abandoned her and she might as well just die. After that, we didn’t ever want to leave her somewhere other than home again in case she tried dying on us again. So my sister and I opted out of the trip, and we all just did separate vacations. No regrets whatsoever. She was way more important to us than a trip.

    However, if it wasn’t for that incident we wouldn’t have had any other reason to worry. As long as she wasn’t actually sick or something it would have just been like any other time we had my grandma babysit her.

    Elderly but not sick, no. My dogs are both 13 (elderly?) and I’ll go on vacations throughout the year. If they get sick, that’s another issue.
