Alright - so people say that opposites attract.  But commonalities also bring people together.  So what happens when it comes to pets?

Even if you like both dogs and cats, most people are either a dog person or a cat person.  What are you?  Is your SO/FI/DH the same, or does he prefer the other animal?

Please check all answers that apply in the poll above (trying to be able to cover all potential senarios) and feel free to explain in the comments below!

For the record - DH and I are both dog people and own a dog.  He had both dogs and cats growing up and has a soft spot for cats too, but would still consider himself a dog person.

    Poll isn't there??

I like both, but I'm really a dog person. So is DH (but then, he's allergic to cats).

We are both pet people... and I think we both LOVE having both dogs and cats. But at the end of the day I can live without cats but I NEED to have a dog. FI could prob live without a dog but NEEDS to have a cat.

Works out for me bc he does the litter box!

FI and i are both huge dog fans and don't like cats at all. my parents and brother are all super allergic to cats so i was raised to avoid them, and FI is a bit allergic to them too. works out very well!

We are both dog people, but that could also be because I am severely allergic to cats and he is slightly allergic.  (Look at all us with cat allergies!)  Plus, dogs are more fun to play with :)

I am a dog person and DH is a cat person. Although we've converted each other so now we're both both.

We are both cat people who really love dogs as well. If I absolutely had to choose, I'd have a cat first. But now that we have both, it's hard to "choose" because we love our dog in a different way. I couldn't imagine life without her. R is the same way, he is more inherently a cat person but loves both.

DH used to talk about the pets we would have and he would list a dog, cat, bird and something else I can't remember - basically an in-house food chain.  I nixed everything but the dog because I love dogs and I can't really be around cats (itchy eyes) and the other critters were too much trouble to think of at this point in time.  One monkey is enough for us - our puppy keeps us totally occupied...

I'm a cat person and FI is a dog person. We have one of each right now. I do like dogs but they are just so much work. FI had always hated cats but he likes ours. I think he just had bad experiences with them growing up.

We're both dog people, and dislike cats. My dad was allergic so I never had one growing up, but my hubby always had a dog. When I moved in with him and his pup, it was very natural for me and we quickly became our own little family.

We are both cat people. We adopted 2 kittens together and have had them for almost 2 years. I don't know how we lived without them- they are such a part of our family now.

We're not really "pet people," but if we did get anything, it would be a cat. We're both cat people. I'm absolutely not a dog person. The only pets I'll deal with are a cat, or a quiet, independent, non-shedding fish.

We are both guinea-pig people (had two guinea pigs together first!!), dog people, fish people... (We have all of those now)

We love all animals. Our favorite would be dogs, though. :)

We both like both of them, though I'm probably a bit more of a cat person, and he's just a bit more of a dog person.  Well, he's really much more of a dog person, but he likes cats, too.  We have two cats right now (one of them was mine already, and the other he suggested we adopt because the original needed a friend).  They're usually "our" cats, unless he's mad at them, at which point they become "my" cats.  We would love to get a dog, too, but right now we just don't have the time or space for one.  We will probably end up with a house chock full of all sorts of animals one day, and I'm pretty excited about that.

I am one of those rare 50/50 dog/cat people. Growing up I've always had both cats and dogs so I couldn't imagine not having either! I like my dog for going on walks, to the river, to keep me safe etc. I like my cat for snuggling and playing with. I treat my cat and dog the same and I love the both dearly so I could never pick!

FI tells people he's a "dog person," but he really isn't! I don't think he wants to look wimpy or girlie for choosing the cat over the dog lol, so I guess that's why he says that. He loves our cat way more though. He kisses him and snuggles with him adn completely ignores our dog! I always see him trying to pet people's cats, but he stays away from dogs.

I am NOT a cat person. Probably because I have had really negative experience with cats, allergies and asthma. I LOVE Dogs.

FI had a cat growing up but prefers having a dog.

Don't be mad at me, but I had an English teacher who told me:

If you were to die in your house, a dog would lay down and protect your body because it still recognizes you as you. However, a cat wouldn't and would eat you. Kinda gross... and def. doesn't help my relationship with cats.

We are both definitely dog people.  I grew up with dogs and could happily live on a farm with a dog of each breed!  :)  Love horses too.  If I could afford to have one, I would in an instant.

Neither of us are cat people.  Both of us are allergic but even if we weren't we just aren't into them.  Love big exotic cats that you find in the zoo tho!  :)

I love cats, but I'm really, really allergic to most of them. I love dogs too, though, especially hypoallergenic ones :). FI is actually more of a dog person, but he got cats because he has a crazy schedule and needed a small pet that could do its business indoors :).

I love all animals, I'm much more of a dog person thou. I'm also slightly allergic to cats. I love dogs more because they're more "friends" & they've been there for me throughout my whole life. You can take dogs places & they usually listen. Plus, I feel more safe with a dog.

DH loves cats, he likes dogs, but he's totally a cat person. He's always had really cuddly cats & loves that, & also that they don't require as much work as a dog. You can leave a cat home alone for a weekend, but with a dog you have a daily responsibility.

I love both cats and dogs, but most specifically I'm a Persian cat person. They seem like a different kind to me than other cats. We have two right now.

DH likes animals, but he would prefer not to have any if it was upto him :( He thinks they're too much of a hassle and make a mess at home by puking, scratching etc. As if he's a very clean and tidy person himself.

@divergirl: I refuse to believe my cats would eat me if I'm dead! They don't even eat their own food if it's leftover from the day before, I really think they would be pickier than that. Plus when I'm injured, sick or sad they always come to comfort to me. Last time I dropped something on my toe and cracked it, I was sitting on the floor crying in pain and one of my cats came to lick my toe. I think people don't give them enough credit.

I used to work in an animal hospital, and studied Veterinary medicine in college, so I'm moreso an animal person in general. My heart melts everytime I see any type of animal. However, I definitely am more of a dog person, as I'm biased and have had my dog for almost 13 years.  She's my baby, haha.

My SO is more of a cat person, he has 4 cats and 1 dog, so I guess in this case, we're opposites haha.

My mom has cats and I like them but I don't like them enough to want to be responsible for them. I'd like to get a dog maybe when I have a house and kids, but I don't like them enough to take them out during a Chicago winter while I have a condo in the city (for those of you who remember me wanting one- I was wrong).. Kingy feels the same way

We're both cat people.  We have 3.

We live in the city and both have busy lives.  Even if we were dog people we still wouldn't own one.  I know people with dogs that have to schedule their lives around them, and that's just not something I want to do.  The cats can take care of themselves when needed.

SO and I are definitely dog people! I have cats periodically throughout my life, but never really enjoyed them. We both like having a pet that is kind of needy. lol Every cat I ever had really could have cared less that we came home from work. I think cats are a hit or miss.

We both LOVE cats, but we also like dogs. We have two cats now, and FI says one day he would also like a dog. I could do without the dog, even though I do love them! They just require more work than cats and I know I would end up being the one to take care of them...
