Does anyone have shoes for their dog(s)?  How does your dog like them?  When did s/he start wearing them (puppy?)?  What is the best kind to get?  Thanks!

@BoiledPNut:  Most dogs that Ive seen with dogs shoes HATE them. Like refuse to walk in them. Ive only seem them at pet stores and there isnt that big of a selection. Id buy them and test them out inside so you can always return them.

I agree, dogs usually hate shoes.

Are you trying to protect your dog's feet from cold or heat? Try "Musher's Secret", you rub it on their paw pads and it helps protect them.

my dog likes to wear them outside, he is a toy pomeranian. He likes them esp when its cold. he doesnt like to wear them insdie the house bc he slips on the floor (hardwood/tile floor) i started ewearing when he was a puppy- i think that is key, if you want your dog to wear clothes or shoes or whatever you have to start when they are young and think its 'normal' thanks!

We do. We got them origionally because our dog REFUSED to step on wet grass which made taking her out in the morning or after a rain the biggest headache in the world. We got these boots and they are awesome. The have a hard bottom, a zipper that makes it easy getting them on and a velcro strap that helps them stay on. Plus they are super warm. We started her wearing them when she was a little younger and she was okay once she got them on. She walked a little funny but that was just cute!

I'm considering trying a shoe for Hailey... she has a cyst between the toes of her right front paw and she keeps licking it... She's wearing a collar as we speak to keep her away from it, but I feel bad because the vet said it could take 4-6 weeks to go away. So, I may go look for a shoe that she could wear instead... you'd think that would be better than a collar, but I'm not sure. I'll let you know how it goes if I try it!

I think in general they are a little silly, but could be useful it you were walking your dog in places where there were sharp rocks or glass. I know the rescue dogs that dig through wreckage usually wear shoes.

Here's Hailey in her sad little "collar of shame":

@Ms Hedgehog:  Those are so cute!!

I definitely think Jackson needs some.  If it's really cold outside and we've been walking a while (or there is snow), he'll lay down on his side to get his feet off the ground (or out of the snow).  It's really sad looking!  Plus, apparently, salt is really bad for their feet.

@78h2o:  Aww poor thing!  I think she'd like the shoes more than the collar.  I think they collar gets in their way.  I hope her feet get better soon!

@BoiledPNut:  If your area is salted for ice that's probably whats bothering him. My (old) greyhound and pomeranian both needed shoes so that the salt wouldn't hurt their feet. If it is that then you could try just washing his feet after a walk so it doesn't have time to settle until you can get him some shoes. The pomeranian loved the shoes because he loved to wear clothes (they came with him so I don't know the brand). The greyhound needed special shoes because of the shape of his feet so I can't really recommend a brand, sorry. He didn't like them but he tolerated them for his walks.

ETA: I didn't see that you wrote about the salt! But yes, it definitely bothers them. :)

My dog didn't like them but would wear them.  He would pick up each foot really high when he had them on so he looked like a prancing pony!

Oh, and our vet had us put toddler socks on him one time when he kept licking his paw.  We used a rubber band or medical tape to hold it on I think.

I bought a set online and my dog hated them. The person whose dog I gave them to also hated them.

If you're concerned about paw pads being cut up, a friend of mine uses Musher's Secret and swears by it for sore dog feetsies.

Never tried them on my maltese, but I'm pretty sure she would freak out.  She hates when I brush up against her feet.

@justelope:  Our Poms did this too! It is too funny to watch.

We had a pair of puppy tennis shoes and frankly it made my pups slip all over the place. I wouldn't consider making them wear them again unless they were in the snow or some place where their paws needed protection. I'm sure they appreciate that. ;)
