We’re childfree and all of our friends and family know it. So I thought we might throw a doggy shower for the first dog we get later this year. I know that all of our friends will want to meet our dog, so why not throw a party? We wouldn’t have a registry, but would def have some games, dogbone shaped invitations and cookies, etc.
Weird, yes/no? If you don’t think it’s weird, feel free to leave suggestions in the comments. =]

@MrsBroccoli: I think it’s a cute idea but I’d probably call it something other than a shower–to me, a shower implies the main purpose of the party is for gifts, and it sounds like this is something a bit different. It does sound like fun, though!

Ha, I love this idea! I would have done this if A. we’d thought of it and B. I was confident the dog wouldn’t be overwhelmed, freak out, and jump on all the people. Lots of people have wanted to come over and meet her but we did it in batches.
But I agree, the term “shower” implies gifts so if you aren’t going for gifts I would call it something else. Dogwarming or doggiewarming is cute!

I think that is super cute but I agree… I like dog-warming party or something along the lines. I wish we did something like this, our boxer would have loved all the attention. Can I come? lol. It sounds like a blast, have fun!

As long as you are clear that you aren’t expecting gifts I say go for it!

How about “Pupapalooza”?
Whatever you call it, I would LOVE to be invited to something like that! DH is ready to kill me for all the sh*t I buy for out dog, this would be a great excuse to snap up the next irresistibly cute thing I see!

I agree, dog warming party. Or Woofstock and let your friends bring their dogs too? I think this is an adorable idea! I’m an animal lover so I would be all over this if an invite came in the mail!

I love this idea! I’m stealing it for when we get our dog, hope you don’t mind!

I would worry it might make the dog nervous to have so many new people around at once? I’d wait and she how he/she does in a crowd before throwing a party, personally. But, sounds cute!

SOOOO freaking cute!!!! I’ve had dog showers before!!! And I’ve been to them.
Normally childless people (or before kids) have them. It’s basically a party with a dog theme that other dogs and people are invited to to meet the new puppy.
PS gifts weren’t a part of this party. It was just a cute thing!! Some people did bring gifts like new dog toys or new brushes (I have a long haired dog), but it was mainly just their presence was the present type of thing.

@bakerella: That is a great idea. Invite other dogs because then your puppy will start to get socialized at a young age.

We did this for our dog, Molly! We called it Dog Day, and invited close friends and family. We also had them bring their dogs if they had them/wanted to. It was so fun! I’m with the other posters, though… calling it a shower may imply people bring gifts. Have fun!

Thanks for all the input, everyone. I know that some people will bring gifts no matter what because a lot of my friends want dogs and can’t have them because of no-pet apartments. I was thinking shower because I would love it if people bought our doggie little toys, outfits, treats, etc.. under $10 stuff. The parties we currently attend most people bring $5-10 worth of liquor. Still, it feels weird to imply people should bring gifts (I don’t know how showers get away with it…), so I’m leaning towards a dog-warming. If we do call it a shower, we will write “Your presence is your present,” even though all the dudes inviting will text Fiance, “So do we bring booze? or…?
As for future dog getting overwhelmed, we’re planning on getting a 2-3 year old hyperactive friendly dog. She’ll be tested around family before the party, for sure. I wouldn’t want her or anyone else to be uncomfortable.

We just called it a puppy party. 🙂 As long as your friends and family are dog lovers I think it’s a great idea! Heck my parents don’t even like dogs but they still buy stuff for ours lol.
