So my Hubby and I just adopted our dog from the shelter on Sunday. She’s doing really well, but has a cold! I never even knew dogs could get colds! We took her to the vet and it’s not Kennel Cough, just a regular ole cold. She’s on amoxicillin for 10 days. She has been coughing up mucus a little bit and her nose is running. I’ve had to wipe it a few times today.
Anyone else have a dog that’s gotten a cold? How long does it take for them to get better? Any tips that anyone could give me?

@AbbyDabbyDoodleBug: my dog got asthmatic bronchitus about a month ago – as far as doing anything for her, other than giving her the meds, i just made sure that she wasnt outside for extended periods of time, and that the house was warm – she stopped coughing in a few weeks.

yep! they’re a lot like human colds. limit time spent outside. if he’s not eating feed 1 part boiled chicken (no seasoning) to 2 parts rice.

Yes animals can get URIs or Upper Respritory Infections very easy. If you have any other animals you will want to reduce time together because it is contagious.

We don’t have any other dogs/pets in our house, so I don’t need to worry about that. I wanted to start trying to socialize her, but that will have to wait until she’s over this.
I’m going to make it a bit warmer in the house too. We tend to keep it on the cool side to try and save on energy costs. Lol.
It’s so sad to hear her coughing away when I can’t do much about it!

If the amoxicillian works then your pup should start feeling better in no time, if it’s viral though it’ll take a couple of days. Just feed her (maybe even spoil her a little and give her some chicken or something really tasty to encourage her to eat) and make sure she stays hydrated and get some rest. She might have the urge to act hyper as soon as she feels better but probably best to keep her calm for an extra day or two after she starts acting normal.
