I’m freaking out! We’re planning on getting married Aug 10, 2014… except we don’t have a venue yet (we have one picked out, plus two alternates). We’re planning on a very small wedding. I just feel like we’re doing everything in the wrong order and I’m panicing! I have my dress (it was on sale and a gift from my parents), but we’re saving up for the venue (probably won’t be able to book until next month). We’re paying for our own wedding (my parents offered, and then backed out, a pattern they’ve done for years).
I’m just panicing that we’re doing everything in the wrong order (dress before venue?). It just has me really paniced! Anyone else say screw it to the traditional timeline checklist? How did it work out for you?

I bought my dress before my engagement ring even came in! It was just the perfect dress, and I had to buy it. My FI was totally with me on it, and he actually paid for it. I think it’s perfectly fine. As long as you’re not doing something crazy like sending invitations out without having booked the venue I don’t think the traditional timeline really matters that much. After all, even if it turns out you can’t book your venue on the day you want, you will still need a dress for whatever date you do pick!

@renwoman: We’re both backwards kinda people so yes we have & it always works out just fine. We booked our venue & I had made our STD’s before he even proposed! We talked about getting married, set a date, told the family, but I wanted a real proposal so I never doubted that he was just going along for the ride…
That’s just how we do it in our household!

@renwoman: Aw sweetie you’ll be fine! It’s actually sweet that you have your dress already, because sometimes there’s a longggg lag time between when you order your dress, and when it actually comes in – it took me 8 months to get my dress after I placed my order at a bridal salon here! Just don’t spend TOO much time looking at dresses between now and the wedding; a lot of bees have fallen into the pitfall of dress regret. Still, I think you’ll be just fine – I ordered my dress in January, and we didn’t get married until 10 months later.
I really don’t think there is a super strict timeline that you have to stick to – you know what you want, and as long as you book things early enough while they’re still available, then you’re fine! We booked our photographer before our venue (whoopsie!) but luckily they were both available for the same date. We procrastinated on a lot of things, like planning our flowers and choosing a bakery to make our cake. Good luck wedding planning, and enjoy every second of your engagment, it flies by!

My order was:
3. venue (then scrap venue, plan intimate destination wedding)
5. plane tickets
6. everything else
My dress did take forever to come in, though. So it barely made it for the wedding.

It really doesn’t what order things get done. It’s my new mantra since moving up our wedding date. 8 months to get everything done! I hope I haven’t bitten off more than I can chew!
