We chose to go to the DR because it was Spanish-speaking. I took Spanish in school starting in 3rd grade, and continuing through college. I am nowhere near being fluent, and the years since I've been out of college have done a number on my vocabulary. But I am excited to be outside the resort and be immersed in the culture. Maybe look into other countries for your HM?
You shouldn't have a problem going into town, if you travel outside of Punta Cana you run the risk of not finding any English speaking people. Punta Cana is a resort town, the town was built around turism so you should be ok.
Have fun! I love DR.
My fiance and I are honeymooning at the Excellence in DR as well! We're so excited. I did some research online we are planning on doing 2 different excursions where the instructors do speak English. We are going zip lining and swinmming with dolphins. Don't have the websites with me right now but google it and you'll find bunches of stuff!
We are going to be at the Excellence in DR as well in just about 2 weeks! We dont plan on going outside the resort THAT much other than shopping and maybe the zipline. I have read (and heard from FI's family that has been there) that alot of the people out side the resort that own shops or tourism venues speak some English. It is a place that heavily relies on tourism so most of the places do know English and you can communicate with them.
@soontbewalsh - what place are you going to to swim with dolphins? I wanted to at a place in Bavaro called Manati Park or something like that but I read so many reviews about what awful conditions the dolphins live in and didnt want to support it by going there. Is there somewhere else nearby that you are going to?
You will LOVE the Excellence!!! I just got back from being a guest at a destination wedding there and it was FABULOUS. Seriously, the best all-inclusive resort I have ever been to. Have a blast!
We are also going to excellence Punta Cana August 2nd, so excited can't wait. Heard awesome reviews

My FI and I are considering doing an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic (Excellence Punta Cana). While we'd want to spend the majority of the time at the resort-we are considering spending a day "out and about." Only problem-neither of us know Spanish well. We know that the resort we won't have a problem, but if we want to go into town it may be difficult. For those of you who have gone their-or planning on going there-was this a problem or concern at all?
