I'm planning on getting my hair cut tonight--at present, it's about elbow-length, so I should have hair that's just below my shoulders once the 10" needed to donate to Locks of Love are gone. EEK! I've done a HUGE chop before (elbow-length to chin-length) and liked the results, though styling my hair is a pain--it's curly and wavy when it's long, but the curl really comes out when it's short.
Am I totally crazy for chopping off all my hair? DH is 100% supportive, and he met me when I had shorter hair so I'm not worried he won't find me attractive, lol. It's just a huge change because I've had long hair again for about three years now.
I'm thinking of just having it cut all one length, as layers make my hair very, very frizzy and hard to manage. Probably won't do bangs, since I have glasses and a small face (way too much going on in the head area, I think). All one length gives me the freedom to do whatever I want with it, too--I'm thinking of bringing out the natural curl and doing a chic 30s/40s style with it most days.
I have donated my hair three times. Twice to locks of love and one to Pantene's beautiful lengths. Every time I've been really happy with the results. If you are nervous about the full 10 inches the Pantene program only requires 8.
@Moose1209: I'm not really nervous about the length itself, since I've gone shorter and it was okay; I'm more nervous about the cut, I think. I want something that's not high-maintenance--and my last short cut, while awesome, was pretty tough to take care of. Thanks for letting me know about the Pantene program, too! I'll look into it.
I went from having super long hair to having a half shaved head with the longer side bleached. I LOVED it! But, growing it out for the wedding has been...awkward looking.
And sorry my pics are always enormous. I can't figure out how to resize them on my new laptop.
Before:
After:

@Stiz: AH! I love it! I'd never have the balls to do something like that, but it looks fantastic on you.
@Mrs Grape:Thanks! It actually grew out really cool for awhile! Then it looked really bad for awhile lol.
Now its been a little over a year, and I have been growing it out for the wedding. It is about at my shoulders now, with a wee bit of the bleached blonde left at the tips.
After the wedding, think I am going to do something crazy again!
@Stiz: I dyed my hair auburn after the wedding and originally was going to keep growing it into infinity, but I like the idea of giving back--of being able to give my crazy-fast-growing hair to someone else who needs it more. My hair went through a period of looking really, really bad as it grew out, too, but I had a ton of layers the first time I went short. The curse of growing hair, I think.
I chopped my hair off by about a foot
Did these backwards but my hair is almost the same as it is in the longer picture again.

I'm thinking of something like this:

I love pinning my hair back with a slight side part, so this is something I'd probably be comfortable with and would suit my face shape well.
@Oneeleven: I like that though the length is different, the style is similar. Those bangs are super-flattering, too--I wish I could pull bangs off.
You're all making me feel a bit braver!
Merci mademoiselle :)
And that cut you linked is gorg! Do you have a photo of your hair now you're willing to share on here?
@Oneeleven: My camera is dead at the moment, but I'll be sure to post a picture before I go and murder my hair tonight!
I just did this on Tuesday! My hair was midback length and I chopped it all - I have 'short layers' now and I LOVE it!! It is the shortest I've ever had my hair. I was actually joking with the hairstylist that my hair hasn't been short since I was 8, and I had it to my chin (so long than it is now!) I say go for it. Hair grows back and worse comes to worse, you can always sport some nice hats!

Hats are always an option, as are headscarves. ;) I can rock that Old Granny look for a while, if I have to...
@Running Elley: Wow, there are so many awesome short cuts in here! Makes me wish I had straighter hair so I could wear something like that.
I went from middle of the back to just above shoulder length in college, loved it and vowed to never grow it long again. A few years later I got a perm, which was super cute until it grew out four months later, when I had straggly curls :( so I went from curly-just-below-the-shoulder to cropped. Basically I cut off everything that didn't have perm in it.
Love love loved having cropped hair and plan to go back to it this summer (I grew it out for the wedding, per Husband's request, and haven't found a stylist I trust to crop it yet in our new city, so it's currently in a blunt, chin length bob).
Just got mine cut last night. Was a bit longer than the 'before' pic (my engagement pic). FINALLY decided I can't handle straightening my hair anymore and went with a curly cut!

Success! Okay, I left in the crappy unmade bed because I wanted to show off the awesome lamp we got as a wedding present, rofl. Also, forgive the blatant mirror!shot and blank expression.
I really think that cut you posted would look amazing on you!
Be brave! :))
@Stiz: I love love love your drastic hair cut! It's frreaking awesome! I told FI that I wanted to something similar after I saw something like that ANTM and I don't think he was too fond of the shaved side :) (giggles)
@Oneeleven: Thanks! I'm not letting myself back out now. A short cut would be good, also, because I'm already starting to get grey and white hairs, so it's less hair to cover if/when I dye it again.
P.S. Right after high school I was so sick of having my boring long hair that I decided to chop it all off and haven't been back since. I have had several drastic haircuts since then and finally decided to have super short hair for the wedding (which I'm very excited about). When I first cut it I went from like mid chest to my nape in the back. I loveeed it. Now my hair is a very short pixie.
@SweetRose2011: I love your pixie! I don't think I could ever go quite that short, because I like having some swishy hair (the cats like it, too), but on the right person, super-short is amazing. I had shoulder-length hair my entire life and started growing it long my junior year of HS. Cut it chin-length as a senior, then started growing it again when I met DH at 19.
@Mrs Grape: well thank you verrry much! I love it!! And p.s. I think your hair and you are very pretty. For some reason you kinda remind me of Ann that was on the last season of ANTM. Hope that doesn't sound weird to you!
@Mrs Grape:Wow your hair is so long, it's gorgeous!! I think with your waves you can totally do that cut that you posted and it would look great. Oh I can't wait to see what it looks like!!!!
@SweetRose2011:Oh and I just wanted to say that every time you post a picture I love your hair. I get tempted to cut my hair as short as yours every single time I see a picture of you because of how amazingly you pull it off!
@Mrs Grape: my hair is pretty wavy, just so you know. If I can post a pic in a bit I will (but I am at work now).
As someone who seems physically incapable of growing very long hair, I am so envious of people with long luxurious waves. I would keep them, but that's just me being jealous and covetous. LOL.
@SweetRose2011: I never watch ANTM so I had to look that up. She's so pretty--thanks! :)
@Running Elley: Aw, thank you! It's a lot of work to take care of it because there's so damn much of it (and it's heavy), but I will miss it when it's gone. Good news is, it grows quickly. I am looking forward to more curl when it's short, too. The length and weight pull the curls into waves.
@Running Elley: awww thank you!!! You ladies are so sweet. I'm just a very antsy person and I'm not afraid to try a lot of things at least once! If you really wanna do it though, go for it! You might end up LOVING it!
DO IT! I LOVE to change up my hair and being able to donate it is even better.
@Mrs Grape: Wow are you a cutie pie! =) I do think the look you are wanting would look super good on you. Go for it girly!
@SunriseMidwest: I know, I look like I'm about ten. ;P But thanks, haha. I'm so excited for DH to get home so we can go get it cut!
I have!

and I feel like I'm ready to do it again - my hair is getting crazy long :)
@rachiecakes: Ooh, a cut AND dye--I like it. I fully intend to take a picture with my "trophy" hair before I ship it off, too...thanks for reminding me.
Oooo you should get the cut that rachiecakes got. Girls with wavy hair and that A-line look...my absolute favorite! It's so chic.
Plus you have an oval shaped face, so a lot of styles will look good on you. I used to get that cut (like rachiecakes) before I grew out my hair for the wedding. I loved that cut. It's like the Victoria Beckham style.
@The Average Bride: I was always told I had a round or heart-shaped face (I have a somewhat narrow chin)--now that I know it's an oval, I think the biggest obstacle is finding something that will look good with glasses. I like Rachiecakes's style, but I'm also a huge fan of retro or vintage-inspired hair, so I think a less angular cut would work best. Someday, though!
@Mrs Grape: Oh deary no, I don't think you look 10 =) I know how you feel about trying to match with glasses!! That's part of why I stuck to contacts - I just had the hardest time trying to make it all work together.
Will you be showing us a fabulous picture of your awesome self after the cut!? =D
