It is what we are doing. We are donating to the arbor day foundation for the reforestation program. I think back to the things you receive and if it is not food then basically I keep it for awhile more out of guilt then eventually get rid of it. I think it is a great idea.
My brother and SIL wedding was just last night & they are HUGE dog lovers. Every person's place setting had a postcard with a milkbone dog biscuit attached saying in lieu of a favor, they were donating 500 lbs of dog food to a local shelter. it was a huge hit and lots of people were commenting on how nice of a gesture it was.

Has anyone ever done this? Or received the "a donation has been made to _____ charity in lieu of a favor" gift? I was thinking that since we're flying to Jamaica for our wedding, not everyone is going to want to pack and bring back a trinket, and obviously candy/popcorn buffets (which I LOVE!!!) is not doable.
Is this totally cheesy? Or resonable?
