So I've heard that in order to make your wedding hair "hold" better, you aren't supposed to wash your hair the day of. But to be honest, my hair gets greasy fast and I think I would feel totally gross on my wedding day if I don't. So I'm going to go against the hairdresser's advice and risk having less hold and clean hair.
What are you doing regarding washing/not washing your hair?
My hairstlyist didn't say anything about this to me so I plan to wash mine. I have psoriasis so I need to wash it every day.
its true - your hair will fall out (especially if you do curls) if you wash it. Have you tried dry shampoo? that should help with the greasiness if you wanted to try and not wash it! I'm not going to wash mine bc I'm doing curls and I know it won't hold if I wash it.
I've heard the same thing, but I don't know about this . . . I have thin hair and bangs. I will at the very least wash my bangs/scalp and perhaps leave my long hair in the back dry. I think it depends on how thin or thick your hair is.
It is very true. Hair actually needs a bit of grease in order to hold. I washed my hair the night before and I didn't have any problems with hold the day of.
yep, definitely don't wash your hair the day of if you can help it. i have thicker hair so it has never been a problem for me, but if your hair is thin i know a lot of people have trouble with that
yeah.. whenever you're planning an elaborate hairstyle, they recommend that you not wash you hair the day of.. my hairstylist actually told me to wash my hair the day before and to put product in it--so that's what i'm going to do.. the wedding day is going to be loooong, so it's important to me that my hair survives through the driving around/picture taking, the ceremony, and the reception.
It depends on when you're getting your hair done. Are you having an appointment the day of? In that case I'd wash your hair the night before. Hair that's too clean won't hold a curl very well as MissAB points out.
My appointment won't be until after noon (haven't exactly decided) but I'm not going to do any elaborate curls anyway. It will likely be straight/wavy. Still working out the details there, lol.
i'll prob wash it the night before and not the day of. My hair barely holds any curl, i'll need all the help i can get! :)
I agree with washing it the night before also, it won't look too dirty the next day, but the grease should help it hold better.
I have heard this many times also...I agree with other bees...just wash your hair the night before and you shouldnt be too greasy on the day of!
Through all my years of dancing (studio, NOT anything else...) we were always told to not wash our hair the day of. I was surprised though that my wedding hair stylist requested my BMs and I wash our hair the day of, blow it dry with product, and not put it up or sleep on it to flatten it out. Check with your stylist to be sure what he/she wants you to do.
I feel your pain!!! it IS true that hair holds curl and style with a little grease in it but with that said I am washing mine the day of. I just feel...dirty if I don't and I am just going to use the tiniest amount of shampoo and I am not using conditioner (it'll take longer to comb out but this will help it to not be too 'clean' and it will hold curl/style). I have always washed my hair for big events and even though I have super straight hair naturally, it has always held up-dos and curls fine.
Check with your stylist but I believe if you do wash it the same day you're supposed to put some sort of product (typically mousse) in it before you blow dry it.
I plan to wash my hair the day of simply because I would feel gross if I didnt lol! When I went to prom like a million years ago lol my stylist told me to wash my hair with dish washing liquid...she said it would hold better...
I washed my hair the day of and my hair wouldn't hold AT ALL. I spent an extra HOUR trying to get it to curl, but the most it would do was turn up at the ends. I was totally disappointed!
Does it matter if I wash it if I'm not doing a curl, just a low, loose-ish chignon that will be pinned in place? I REALLY need to shower in the morning or else I am not awake at all and I feel disgusting, even if I showered right before bed the night before.
i'm washing my hair the morning of the day before. i've heard the same thing and luckily i have thicker hair so it's not as big of a deal for me.
i've read a lot about hair washing because i'm a nerd and was curious. from what i've read if you wash your hair everyday then it's going to appear a lot greasier the first day you skip washing it. this is because your head has gotten use to producing extra oil. once your hair gets "use" to it though it doesn't look as bad once you cut back on washing, like, every other day. i wash my hair every other day and i dont have any extra yuck factor.
i say read up some and talk to your stylist and see what suggestions she has.
I did that for prom. I have super thin oily hair and didn't wash it before getting my hair done. I had so much hairspray in my hair no one noticed. I guess it depends on the style you go for. I could even take all the bobby pins out and it would stay in the same place, lol. I plan to wash mine the night before for the wedding.
My stylist also told me not to wash my hair. I told all of my bridesmaids, and one carefully followed that instruction but accidentally put a relaxing gel on her curls because she thought it would help the stylist blow out her hair. After 30 minutes of blowing her hair, the stylist told her to go wash it out because the product was just making her hair look really greasy. So wash your hair the day (or night if you must) before and don't put anything in it.
My stylist said not washing hair on your wedding day is very "old school" thinking. There are plenty of quality hair products available that will make any style 'hold" when done by a competent stylist. She was right - my super-straight, long thick hair was done in a loosely curled chignon and it held up great for 12+ hours. I washed it the morning of the wedding and dried it thoroughly and was styled at noon. If you are not comfortable going with unwashed hair, you might find another stylist with more product knowledge. And of course having a hair trial done in advance will put your mind at ease.
It depends on your hair. My hair look awful unless it is freshly washed. So- i would say- WASH your hair!!!! I don't care if my hair would fall or hold curl better if it was slightly greasy- No thank you!
Yup, clean hair is a lot harder to work with than dirty hair is - it just doesn't hold as well.
I would wash it the night before!
@kitty- Would you still feel gross if you showered without actually shampooing your hair? Getting it wet isn't the problem, just the shampoo.
I'm not an expert, but I do know some people have hair with a tendancy to not hold a curl, while others' hair works much easier. If you tend to have the hair that doesn't hold a curl in general, then I would go with the no wash rule as a precaution. If your hair is generally fine, then you can probably wash it without huge difficulty because all the hair product will help it stay in place. If you have curly hair that tends to frizz and want straight hair on your wedding day, probably don't wash, and same for the opposite, you have poker straight hair that won't hold a curl, best to avoid washing the day of. As I said, I'm not an expert and just going with some personal experiences. Always ask your hair stylist :)
You can shower/ blow dry the night before. For my friend's wedding (I was a BM) we were told not to wash it. So, I did that the night before and the day of I wore a shower cap in the shower (I would have felt gross to not shower at all). My hair can get greasy at the roots, but like some bees have said, with hairspray and everything it looked fine! Plus, I was happy I didn't because my curls lasted all night (which is rare for my hair).
I wasn't told of anything such by my hair dresser, but my mom was the one who suggested it. I told her no way. I'm washing my hair on the day of but I'm using a super mild shampoo so it won't be too dry and will be receptive to the styling. Also, I imagine that clean hair is more receptive to product, isn't it?
My hair is the same way, but I think I'll wash it the night before so its kind of half-a-day-dirty :)
If you wash your hair the day of, don't dry it. Blow dried hair does not hold up well to styling.
I guess im the only person who doesnt wash her hair everyday (i usually do every other day).. normally? lol.
My hair isnt oily at all though.
btw.. i still shower everyday!
Yeah, have any of you heard of a shower cap? :)
I wash my hair every other day. I have bangs and they do get dirtier faster, but I either just wash those or pin them back on my dirty day. I'll wash my hair on the day of the wedding though since I'm only doing a bun.
Not washing here, but I'm also going to be careful about not sweating too much the day before (e.g. no working out the morning of!)
I washed mine the night before. BUT i didn't put any conditioner in. SIL said conditioner makes your hair slick and lose its hold
I don't wash my hair every day. Sometimes not even every other day. I utilize hairspray, headbands, and french braids on a regular basis.
I have to wash my hair day of. I just can't stand anything else. I have worried about this too, but whatever, the professionals I have hired should be able to deal, right?
I think you know your hair better than anyone else, so if you feel like it gets too greasy, then just wash it.
I asked my stylist the same question, because I had heard the same thing, and she told me to just wash it the morning of the wedding because she prefers to work with hair that will have more volume. She did mention trying not to use very much conditioner though.
I go days without washing my hair - it's not necessary. Your body can adjust to it and it's healthier for your hair, especially if you're using harsh drugstore shampoos and products. Like EJS - I get creative on the 3rd day if i have to. My hair is super soft and very healthy even though I enjoy visiting the salon for color changes. if you can't stand it, at least wash it the night before, not the day of.
Ask your stylist for more guidance. I've asked a few and gotten a variety of responses, so check with yours to see what he/she prefers.
BTW - I'm an every other day hair washer with no issues. I use dry shampoo on my none wash days and it works great.
As a stylist, I'm going to agree with Surgie and her stylist on this one. This is very old school thinking...there are plenty of products now that have exactly what your hair needs to hold an updo and/or curls. Products for heat memory, texture, volume and frizz/humidity control will do all the work for you.
With fine hair myself, I know the issue with grease and flat hair very well. I HAVE to wash everyday, no matter what. For some people, however, it looks much better if they don't wash every day.
These "rules" for hair are only rules and always have an exception. Remember that.
For ladies who's hair doesn't hold curl - hair that has NOT been heat styled at all will hold curls (or any style) best. I think that if you wash in the AM of the wedding and have minimal drying with the hairdryer it would be easier to style because if you wash before bed your hair will end up wavy from the head your head produces during the night. Just a thought.
Washing it the night before seems like a good idea.
But, keep in mind, you CAN shower that morning and not wash your hair. So don't let that deter you.
