I found a “gourmet” donut shop in my area and thought why not have a donut cake instead of a traditional wedding cake. I’m pretty much sold on the idea because they have maple bacon donuts, my ABSOLUTE FAV! Do you think guest will enjoy a donut cake or be bummed because they don’t get traditional cake. Also should I have the top tier be a small cake since I have a cake knife and so I can do the cake cutting ceremony. Or have a grooms cake to cut?

I am personally more traditional, so I wouldn’t choose it for myself, but I wouldn’t think badly about it if I went to a wedding with a donut cake (as long as it looks classy). Will you have a variety of flavors? Just because I’m sure you’ll have vegetarians and others who don’t eat pork.
You could always have a “donut ripping ceremony” or something if you don’t want to get a cake just for the cutting. You and your husband could pull one in half and feed it to each other.

Personally, as a guest, I wouldn’t care. Out of curiousity, is this a daytime or evening wedding? A donut cake wold be so cute for a brunch wedding! Either way, I think it will be fine as long as you love it.

As a guest I would LOVE a donut for wedding cake. It is so fun. I think you’d get a lot of compliments from guests on this as I have never heard of this topic before coming to the bee.

looks amazing! I’d love that!

I think it would be great fun. I’d rather have a donut than a piece of cake anyday.
If you want to do a traditional cake cutting, you can easily get a cake stand that can accomodate a small cake.

omg i would love this. I’ve never been to a wedding where the cake was good (we did pies!) I promise no one will miss the cake!

ronnie.gleed: Who doesn’t love donuts? I’d just make sure there was a variety of different types of donuts.

Mmmm yes please! I love donuts!
ETA: Now I want a donut REAL bad. If the bakery by my apartment was still open I would be heading over there right now.

ronnie.gleed: We had a donut cake at our engagement party and my god I have never seen people love a cake like they loved those donuts lol we also had a cute little bunting sticking out the top with ‘*my name* (love heart) *Fi’s name*’.
Honestly I think people loved it way more than a traditional cake, we had SO many donuts and I was sure we’d end up with a tonne of leftovers.. but not a single donut was left by the end of the night!
I say go for it (i’d do it again if we hadn’t already!). And I think the idea of a single layer on top is cute if you want something to cut!

CHristine2809: yes we will have a variety. I’m hoping I can find someone creative to set up the donuts on the cake stand to make it look classy
citysparkle: it is an evening wedding, but I was hoping people will still enjoy it as an evening desert.
MrsNebraska: thanks! This is my first post as a bee, so I’m new here!
MrsBeck: mmm better stop by and grab one in the morning, I indulged in one at work this morning, can never turn down a free donut
bkrocks13: pies is a unique idea, I like that! What flavors did you have?

Miss_E_xx: how many donuts per person did you have? We haven’t gotten our rsvps back get but we invited 150 guests so I’m not sure how many donuts we will need?
