We chose a name for our baby around Thanksgiving, and I'm due in 8 weeks. We're having a boy, so the name process was a lot harder.. but we thought we loved it. and this week I've been having serious doubts about it and not "in love" with the name.. and just worrying that for a boy it's too uncommon. Even though the nickname for it isn't too "unique." We wanted something not so common as "James, John, Andrew" type thing but not something too odd, since it's a boy.
We already did our maternity pictures with the name in it though, so those pictures would just be wasted if we didn't stick with the name! Ugh I dunno what to do!!!
The name is Jacobi, and we would call him Cobi for short.
(pronounced Juh-co-bee, NOT like "Jacob" - here is a link to how we pronounce it)
Whats the name? Have you looked it up in the SSN lists? If its out of the top 100ish then its not too popular. Are you maybe just anxious as your about to have a CHILD in 2 months haha? It might be just like kinda like cold feet?
Do you have good photos without the name?
Can you use Jacobi as a middle name, maybe?
What made you love the name in the first place? Do you think it might just be hormones and the uncertainty of his upcoming birth that's making you doubt the name? Do you have any second choice names or was that name really the one? I wouldn't stress out about it too much, once you have him in your arms, you can look at him and see if it still fits. If not, maybe there's another name that's just "him". You don't have to name him right that second either, if you want to take a little while and get to know his personality before you settle on a name that fits him.
@Rush1986: I just checked, it hasn't been in the top 1000 EVER! So it's pretty uncommon.. but different spellings of Cobi range between 500-800 on the list.
haha it could just be me getting nervous and anxious and everything.. I just want to be sure that the name we give him is a GOOD name, one that he will like.
@occhiblu: I'm sure we do, though I haven't seen the photos yet. We just had them done two weeks ago. Eh, I wouldn't want to use it as a middle name.
@saraja87: It was the first name my husband and I actually agreed on! I really liked the nickname, and he liked the whole name. I had other names I liked, but none that my husband and I BOTH liked.
Maybe wait until you see the baby? Seriously, my brother went without a name up until my mother was supposed to leave the hospital.
@miss-spunkin: We have Jacoby Ellsbury on the Red Sox, so although it's uncommon, it's certainly a name that Sox fans would know! :) I like it, and if you orifinally decided on it, it must be something that you loved. Good luck!
@bpcmarj: do you know if his name is pronounced like Jacob with a y sound at the end, or how I'm doing it, with the Cobi sound at the end (if that makes sense!)
I'm sure if you decide that you no longer want to use the name, it can be photoshopped out of your maternity pictures.
What is it specifically about the name you're doubting? Is it just that it is uncommon, or are you concerned people will mispronounce it?
We have a friend named Jacoby! Of course it's spelled different, but still a great name!
ETA: It's pronounced like yours =)
@MissEdamame: moreso that it's too uncommon for a boy. I feel like having a name that is too unique can be a detriment for a male, but is good for a female.
Since I'll be calling him Cobi almost exclusively, I'm not too worried about the pronunciation.
It's not too uncommon at all. It's not a "popular" name but there are a number of sports players who are named Jacobi so it's unique but recognizable. I think you guys picked a great name.
@miss-spunkin: The name we've picked for our little boy is a short form/nick name....but we only like the short form, so we're just naming him that. As a teacher, I will also say that it is a bit confusing in school when a kid has a name on the attendance that is longer but no one calls them that. As a supply teacher, I call out the name on the paper and then the class laughs because they only know the kid as the short name, but think it's funny that he/she has a different name on the attendance.
@saraja87: Oh thank you SO much! that totally made me smile, you ladies are so great. I'm feeling a little better about it already!
@cvbee: yeah. I would have done that, except that my husband doesn't like just "Cobi" he likes Jacobi. So I gave in, he's been IMPOSSIBLE to please when it comes to names.
I have a friend with a baby Jackobi. pronouned the same. I like it.
Anyone from Massachusetts has heard of Jacoby! I prefer it with a "y" though.
I met a little boy, Jacoby, a couple years ago and when I was a child I had a Jacolby in my class. I really like both names, I say go with what feels right.
@heathaah: I went back and forth on it. The baby name book said with an "i" is the most common spelling though, and with a "y" people tend to pronounce it differently..
I like it. That name doesn't even enter the realm of "out there" names in my mind.
I've never heard of that name, but I actually like it. I keep saying it outloud to myself because it just sounds awesome. (**nerd alert**)
And you're right, Cobi is more common and more likely to be pronounced right...and now your baby will have the choice of what he prefers to be called.
Don't doubt it!
And good luck with everything! :)
@soon2bhis: haha cute! That even made my husband laugh :)
@SapphireSun:& @cbee: Thank you!!
I really like the name. It's much better than most of the ones I've heard lately.
Agreed w/ everyone - it's uncommon but not weird.
And I'm not from Massachussetts but I'm a big baseball fan and the first person I thought of was Jacoby Ellsbury of the Red Sox. He's a cutie too. :)
What about just Cobi? It sounds like you are rarely going to use the full name anyways ;)
I really like Jacobi. I prefer it. I think it's a really cool name. I think of a rugged man. I like Cobi too, it's just the only Cobey's (spelling different pronounciation the same) I've ever known have both been girls. But then there's Kobe Bryant, who's obviously not a girl, and Kobe Beef.
Jacoby is one of my favorite names! It is so cute. I first heard it from Papa Roach, the band. The lead singer is named Jaocby Shaddix. Great choice!
I don't like it. I might like it better if it was spelled with a Y instead of an I. The I is a little girly for my taste.
One of my friends' maiden name was Jacobi so she is planning on naming her baby that. I think it's cute. :)
@redheadem:You actually have a point with that. I remember learning that a big way to differentiate a unisex or questionable sex name is to look at the I and the Y. Men usually end with the Y while women end in the I or IE and Y.
All I can think of are the commercials for the law firms Jacobi & Meyers and Jacobi & Jacobi that are on TV a lot in my area...
@miss-spunkin: Others have already answered this, but it's pronounced like yours. Not like Jacob-y like ja-koh-bee.
I also prefer it with a y, just because that's the way that I have seen it, and agree with PP's that it seems more feminine with an "i" at the end.
