My wedding was in the loop, so I blocked rooms at the Palmer House, the Silversmith Inn and the Hampton Majestic. The Hampton sounded the least fancy, but we were pleasantly surprised. It had been modernly renovated, gave by far the best service, had a great rate, and it included breakfast. The rates were $269/night at the Palmer and $159-169 at the the other two.
We got married at Navy Pier and did our hotel room blocks at the Red Roof Inn (right off Michigan) as our cheaper option ($89/night) and the Fairfield Inn ($169/night). Both worked out for our guests really well.
For this September I've got room blocks at the Wyndham Blake, The Silversmith and Renaissance Chicago Downtown (fantastic views of the river here!). I actually like the Wyndham Blake rooms the best and it's the least expensive of the three! Prices ranged from $140-$205/night
@meggyo I'm also considering getting a block of rooms at the Red Roof Inn as my cheaper option, but I've never been there myself. How did your guests find the hotel? I've seen some not-so-great reviews on yelp.
For FBIL's wedding last year we stayed at the Hotel Sax. It was expensive, but SUPER nice and close to everything.
Check out the Seneca on Chestnut - I think we found them on HotelPlanner.com. somewhat business focused (no pool) but a good option for no frills families in that area since they offer suites.
@cz1789: everyone thought it was fine. we actually had most of our guests book here. we went on a tour of the hotel before we did the room block. the rooms are definitely small and there aren't many bells & whistles, but the rooms were clean and well decorcated. for the price and location, i thought it was pretty amazing.

I am currently trying to secure a hotel block for my September 2012 wedding in downtown Chicago (preferably near the Mag Mile), does anyone have any recommendations?
