I wanted to share our story =)
J and I have been going out for 5 years and 9 months. I was patiently waiting for him to ask – no pressure but we’ve looked at rings. A couple of my close girlfriends recently got engaged and I was feeling a little left out. One day, Jason joked that he’d propose to me while I was in the bathroom since all his surprises always get ruined one way or another. Little did I know that he was already planning!
On a sunny day, our group of friends met up for a Dragon boat practice. For those unfamiliar with the term, a dragon boat is a long narrow canoe–style boat that carries 20 people/paddlers. We were practicing for an upcoming race/festival.
I was in the front row of the boat and I was concentrating on paddling. As we were heading back to the dock, a friend behind me jokes around and asks “Why is there an alligator in the river?” I look ahead and don’t see anything so I proceed to paddle. Then she says… “Why does that sign say ‘KRISTINE WILL YOU MARRY ME’?”
As I looked up again and read this – my heart jumped. Could it be ME????!!! Why did I even dare to ask this question??? Because my friend who has the SAME name, SAME spelling was sitting in the SAME boat, and her boyfriend was on the same boat. It could’ve been either of us! I quickly turned around to see his face but I couldn’t find him amongst our friends!! I was in shock and disbelief because I swear that he would be asking next year! I looked back again and he gave me a smile of approval. I looked to the dock and there was the huge sign and a bunch of people!
As we got even closer to the dock, I started to cry and couldn’t hold it in. My family was there with t-shirts that had our names, friends from college, friends from high school (who are very hard to get a hold of – this made me bawl)!! J and I jumped off the boat, everyone was chanting for him to get down one knee. He pauses and says “Where is my family?? They have the ring!!” It was quite a scene but everyone started to gather as he tried to locate his family. It turns out they were at the wrong place!!
Anyways, people randomly passing by stopped as soon as they saw the HUGE sign…”Oo I gotta see this”. His family finally arrived a few minutes later and he got down on one knee. I was so happy to share our moment with the special people in our lives!
The actual proposal…
The whole gang! Both sides of families and our wonderful friends!!
