On a holiday somewhere, preferably Venice or seeing Northern Lights, in a nice hotel there. Otherwise, anywhere where it's just him and me, no public places! Has to be down on one knee.
But, I'll take what I can get!
As long as it's romantic, surprising, and involves a ring and those four little words, I don't care!
Ideally it wouldn't be in our flat. We spend so much time there that I wouldn't want it to feel like something 'normal'.
However! The only exception to that is the proposal in The Time Traveller's Wife where he puts the ring on her hand whilst she's sleeping - that made me go all funny inside and would be a nice proposal since we've been talking about it a lot... it would be a kind of *hey you, look, I went and did it :)*
I'm not too bothered about a public proposal, either. Quite like the idea of him expressing his love for me for all to see! That and hopefully someone would be able to take a photo!
And for what I really don't want? Not in a restaurant, and not on a special occasion. I hate the idea of a Valentines or Christmas proposal because they're so common - I want to have 'my moment' and not share it with other people.
a bird courtship dance. I'm not kidding. I love the idea of my SO dancing around. Or building me a structure like this:

lol. I really like birds.
hmmm... my dream proposal would be something low-key but still special.
maybe a nice dinner out and then propose somewhere private (not a fan of public proposals, but that's me)
or maybe at home, but with some flowers and a nice bottle of wine.
I'd to hear the phrase, "Will you marry me?" while he is on bended knee and I'm a-ok. Hopefully, he catches me on my good hair and makeup day. So, preferably we're going out to a nice restaurant/event?
After he asks for my parents' blessing, I would love it if he surprised me with a proposal at Spookers (http://www.spookers.co.nz/). It's a haunted attraction theme park in Auckland - very appropriate since we are both big horror movie fans and we first said I love you to each other whilst watching The Exorcist. It sounds twisted but I just think it would be awesome (and make a fantastic story) to be proposed to while Freddy, Jason, Chucky, etc are roaming about.
I don't know if it's my dream proposal, but it's how I would do it.. Valentine's Day is coming up of course and each Vday we get two lobsters for dinner from the grocery and cook them ourselves. I would love for him to position the lobsters so that the ring is on one of their claws LOL! and as soon as I see it of course, down on one knee, lovely speech, kissy kissy ;)
@elysion: Lol!
@Scottish_lassie: I would like something sweet and simple... no big grand gestures. I would love it to be just the two of us, not in front of an audience. I would like to be in a romantic setting like the beach at night or while watching a sunset. It sounds cheesy I know but I'm a sucker for romance.
You didn't answer the question... what is your dream proposal? :)
This is easy for me because my SO described his perfect way of proposing to me and it's now my perfect way too!!
He wanted to pretend to work overnight one night (he actually works overnight maybe twice a year) and then fly to new York. Then he'd leave something I would see when I woke up telling me I had three hours to pack. Then I would get to the airport and find out I was going to new York. Then I'd get there and have directions to a hotel and he'd tell me I had to be at basically our favorite restaurant in the world, wearing a nice dress at XX time. Then I'd get there and he'd propose and then the next day we'd go choose a ring together in the diamond district.
Meh came up with this on his own. And he was planning it for next month, but now he has to do a scaled back version. I am so excited.
In enteral I have alwaysgloved the "let's et married and then choose a ring" because I think it would be suchis surprise! :)
First thing that popped into my mind:
I work a super hard day at work. My man is supposed to be at work like our usual schedule. When I unlock and open my front door, the apartment is FILLED with tea light candles and rose petals. He would be on his knee in the middle of the living room...with a little box :D I'd freak out and cry. He'd ask me to marry him! Done deal. I hope someone on this board finds out who I am and then promptly tells him to do this soon :D lol
OR....at a holiday in front of all of our friends and family :) One of the two.
Well see my SO was two months off being engaged to his ex when they broke up (as in he'd booked a holiday on which he was planning on proposing, told all his friends and family, but not got round to asking her dad yet). She ended it.
We got together two months after they split so on our second week together he and his friends went on holiday to the cottage he had booked to propose (awkward! lol). I don't know much about what his proposal was going to be (he said he hadn't figured it all out when they split) but because I really don't want to feel like the runner up prize, I've told him he cannot ask me on a holiday or I will say no (not to be mean, although it may sound it, but bare in mind he will be proposing with the same ring - it's a family ring, luckily only a temporary ring until we go shopping for mine after the proposal)
As for the musts, I'd like him to have asked my Mum's permission to marry me first (my Dad's not in the picture), I'd like him to be down on one knee and say something before 'will you marry me'. Mmmm I'd also like it if he was wearing a suit at the time (he looks soooooooooo good in a suit). Other than that I'm not too fussed although I would be angry if he spent a lot of money on it - would rather it was meaningful to us than huge and showy. So he could ask me in the cinema where we had our first date (but not on the screen, that's cheesy IMO). Okay, it can't be cheesy either lol. Wow, I was pickier that I thought lol
I don't care if he's on one knee or where we do it or if it's with family to friends or alone (as long as it's not really public like at asporting event. I don't care if he gives a little speech. I just want him to say those 4 words. And I want it to be somewhere or something that means a lot for us. Although my "dream" proposal above (which he entirely came up with on his own) does sound grand, that's not what matters to me. But new York, and that restaurant do mean a lot to us. And we love to travel together (and we do a lot of it) so it has so many wonderful memories for us. We're boh romantics.
I would like if he asked my parents or at least informed them of his plan to ask me. My parents love him and would of course say yes! :)
@MissTX: Love the romantic home proposal!!! Perfect for valentines day!!! My fingers are crossed for you!
I don't really have anything specific in mind, but it would be nice if it was on a vacation, or even a short weekend trip and preferably outside. I'd want something quiet and personal. I don't really want other friends or family involved. Definitely not at dinner or anything like that.
First, I have to say that I loved the way my fiance proposed to me. It was perfectly him and I adore it.
However, an engagement that always stood out in my mind was in that movie Stepmom. When Julie Roberts was proposed too with the spool of thread. He tied the string around her finger and let the ring travel down the string to her finger. It still makes me smile. Precious!
@abirdword : Literally laughed out loud. Love it. I can imagine the manfriend doing a little dance. Oh god, just looked at your link. Hello new best friend.
I feel like I might have the most unromantic one. Before we go to sleep everynight, even if I'm going to stay awake to study, we spend a few minutes in bed cuddling and talking before the light goes out. That time would be significantly special to me. Though... logistically speaking that might not be the best time as I'd never sleep. But it seems like us. Maybe in the morning.
@missfrillycoat: haha, thanks! I picture the structure with the ring in between the sides of it. Ah, a girl can dream, can't she?
Something cute relating to us as a couple, like if we were out on our motocross bikes, or at our favourite west coast beach or something...Sweet, simple and heartfelt is what I'd love. Tying a note around our cat's collar, writing 'marry me?' in the sand at maori bay, pulling a ring out of the crank case while rebuilding an engine together...Man, I'm full of good ideas, maybe I should propose ;)
It would be completely unique, memorable and over-the-top.
I'm a complete princess girl. I love the idea of mine being the best, most amazing, outrageously over-the-top romantic proposal. I'm absolutely competitive, and I want it to make others sigh and have that twinge of jealousy (sounds mean, but this is "fantasy land" and "just for fun", so I'm gonna run with it lol).
I want it to involve LOTS of planning and effort. I don't care too much for the details, just so long as thought has gone into it to make it so special that it is like a fairytale.
