Wedding gown sizes are ridiculous, you’d think they would want brides to feel better about themselves, not make them feel fat.

My dress was ordered 4 sizes bigger than my “street size”. It is pretty normal in wedding gown world 🙂

Wedding dress sizes and street sizes don’t always match up. I’d check the designer’s website to make sure they ordered the correct size for your measurements, otherwise alterations can cost a fortune!

@blondebride2: What kind of dress did you get if you don’t mind me asking?  I got a Maggie Sottero and I was pleasantly surprised that they run pretty true to size.  (unless she measured me wrong, ha)

Yes, the wedding dresses are pretty crazy in sizing. It really has no reflection on your true size.  Don’t worry, it’s a lot easier for them to go down than up.

Completely normal – when I bought my wedding dress I was a small street size 6 (sometimes a 4 actually) and I got a size 10.  Don’t worry!

Its best to just ignore the label, it means nothing. I’m about your same size (and always a 2-4 in street clothes) – my dress was a size 10 and fit like a glove.

I’m not saying this is the case for you BUT I had a similar freak out moment and of course I ran to the bee for comfort. I am normally a 4 but the dress was ordered in a size 10 at the urging of the consultant. I have my dress now and IT IS HUGE! As in falling off my body huge. I’ve been told that alterations will be able to easily fix it but I don’t know.

Where you able to try on a size 10 to see how a dress that big might fit?

Just saw that you have your dress. Ironically mine is an Essence as well…maybe they just run big? Good Luck!

Makes ya feel huge huh?!!  I’m a street size 8 and I won’t even tell you what my wedding dress size is.  I’ve never been called “plus sized” in all my life until searching wedding dresses!

But, it’s just a number.  I have no idea why it’s like that but it’s normal.

Wedding dresses do run a little big, but unfortunately designer sizing charts are also way off sometimes. On top of that the store usually measures you a little liberally to be “on the safe side” or simply to make money off alterations. I’m a street size 2 and my Lazaro dress was ordered a 6. I was swimming in the dress when it arrived and it was a very difficult dress to alter and never looked the way I wanted to it. My seamstress said they should’ve orderd a 2 or a 4.

I had the opposite happen with me….. I was measured a size 2 for chest, and in between size 4 and 6 for hips & waist… but I was told to order a size 4.  I’m assuming it’s b/c I have a corset back in mine and I was only 1/2 inch off from the size 4… but it still worries me!  Plus, I asked them if I should order a 6 to be on the safe size, but the consultant said 4 should be perfect. My dress won’t be in until April so I am very nervous.  Good thing I will still have 6 months before our wedding when it comes in! I just hope I was measured correctly….

I think it depends on the designer of your dress and your hip/bust measurements. My dress is a Mikaella and they ordered me a 10. I wear a street size 6. I know a girl who got the same dress as me, but she’s a street size 1/2 and they ordered it in as a 10 for her too. Hers was altered to fit her beautifully, so I’m sure that’s the plan for yours 🙂
