I dont live in your area, so I cant be helpful there.
But when I was looking into having a friends gown altered to fit me (it was a gorgeous gorgeous gown, but it was too elaborate for what I wanted my wedding to be)
I googled "seamstresses near.. and bridal seamstress, and professional seamstress near, wedding alterations" basically I googled it to death and I also looked on Wedding Wire and yahoo yellow pages. I found a couple seamstressed with reviews from brides, some even posted before and after photos of the work they'de done.
If you are not comfortable with your Fiance's friend..dont risk it.
Good Luck!

Here's a fairly recent thread about alterations in NYC. I second penny's suggestion to look through google searches, and through local bridal magazines (like New York Magazine's Bridal Edition).
You could try looking on Yelp.com for a seamstress in your area? That's how I found one (in Boston) to do my alterations, which were also minor.
Not sure where in PA your family is, but if it's near Philly-- my tailor works out of her home and is great. She used to work out of the store where I bought by dress, but when the store closed she continued to work from home. She is located in Atco, NJ which is close to exit 4 off the NJ Turnpike. If you're interested, PM me and I can send your information.

Hi All!
I'm having a bit of a dilemma about my wedding dress, and I'm hoping one of you Bees might be able to help. Here it is:
I bought my wedding dress at a Running of the Brides event in Boston last summer and have been starting to think about alterations. The alterations are very minor since the dress fits almost perfectly. It needs to be taken in a bit around my chest and bustled. Also, one 'button' (if that's what you call it) is also missing from the line down the back of the dress.
At first, I started calling local bridal shops in Nazareth, PA, but most (if not all) told me they would not alter a dress not purchased at their store. I can sort of understand this, but now I am not sure what to do.
In December, my fiance's friend offered to have his mother alter the dress. So, I let her take a look at it figuring no harm, no foul in looking. After the fact, though, I regretted it. She's altered dresses before, but never wedding dresses--and, when she was looking at the dress on me, she started talking about how lace that lays on top of the seams would need to be CUT in order to take it in at my chest!! I was so shocked, especially considering I expected the alterations to be pretty straightforward.
She suggested I come back to her in February, but I am very hesitant to. I'm sure that my beautiful dress (which I absolutely adore!) can be altered without cutting through the lace and disfiguring it!
I've been looking for a good, recommended seamstress, but I'm not having much luck! I'm flexible in terms of where I can go. I live in South Orange, NJ, but work in NYC and am also home to see my family in PA a lot of weekends.
I've seen a couple of good ratings for Fashions by Anne in Bethlehem, but I'm not sure. On the very off chance, has anyone been there?? Or does anyone have any other suggestions--in the Lehigh Valley, near South Orange?? I'd prefer not to bring my dress into the city, but will if necessary. Also, I'm on a budget.
Can anyone of you Bees help me?
Thank you so much in advance!
