Not sure about the style of your dress, but what about leaving a raw edge? Or, hand stitching a delicate lace edge to it? Or....just surged?

I am doing the alterations on my vintage wedding dress myself (don't worry, I have a lot of sewing experience), but I am having trouble with the neckline. I am trying to use the fabric to make an illusion neckline (chiffon with lace overlay) but I can't get the bound top edge to look nice. It ends up looking bunchy and heavy. I can't do too many more trials because the fabric is really fragile.
Anyone have experience making illusion necklines with delicate fabrics? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
