Does anybody know of a good seamstress in Des Moines? Bought my dress in Ames @ Pure Bridal, but they recommend a seamstress in Boone. I’d rather try to find someone reputable closer to home so I’m not schlepping up to Ames or Boone all the time. Plus, when I called the number to see if she could give me a quote or what the average cost runs, she was rather rude.
Where have you gotten alterations done? And what was the approximate cost, if I can ask?

I didn’t get my bridal dress done in Des Moines, as my shop in Carroll does alterations on site (and keeps my dress until my wedding day)
Kim’s tailors in Valley West mall took in a dress that was about 4 sizes too big on me in. It was a black dress, it looked good, and it only cost me $40. The guy who owns it is normally the one there, and he is a very sweet guy.
I have heard varrying opinions about Hickman Tailor’s (corner of Hickman and Merle Hay Drive) Some people swear by them, some people call them awful. They do more wedding dresses, though. I know nothing about thier prices.

I got my dress at Pure Bridal as well and am trying to find someone for alterations. Who did you end up using @lala3005?

johnsonkai: I ended up going to someone who worked through a bridal shop in the East Village – I would NOT recommend her though. Although she did decent work, it ended up costing quite a bit more than she originally quoted, with no explanation as to the difference – and she refused to let me take my dress home after I had paid the quoted amount and was disputing the difference. I was quite ticked. The dress cost me under $500, but the alterations were almost $400 just to take it in slightly in the bodice and bring up the hem a few inches (this was a simple A-line as well, without embellishments, lace, etc, which I would expect to drive the price up). Original quote was just over $100.
I didn’t go to Kim’s, as I had a bad experience with them a few years ago with a bridesmaid dress. My advice, honestly, would be to trek up to Boone – I think at the very least they’ll deal with you honestly as Pure Bridal is bringing them business, so they want a good rep.
