So today I am taking “Bernie” ( Yes I named my dress Bernie ) back to David’s Bridal for the alterations tonight. I am really nervous I think I am more nervous about what type of price they are going tell more than the alterations itself. I don’t need much just to bring up the top and pull it in some but not much.. I have been reading through alot of the alteration posts on here and have noticed prices ranging from $250-500 and up! I don’t have a big complicated wedding gown..
This is the dress that I have, can anyone give me advice/estimate how much it should cost? Thanks Bees!

get quotes from davids and then private seamstresses in your area. that will be a simple dress and i would take it to a seamstress not the bridal store. they’re usually expensive….

I don’t think that your alterations will cost much since your dress has very little beading and you don’t have to hem up a train like most of us did!

I would guess that your alterations would be somewhat cheaper than other quotes you’ve read for the reasons that MissAsB mentioned. However, if I were you, I’d get some quotes from David’s and maybe another seamstress if you don’t like their price.
ETA: I love this dress! Really chic!

I would also recommend contacting some private seamstresses for prices. I think they would likely be cheaper and might to a better job than David’s Bridal. I have heard a lot of complaints about the alterations department of David’s Bridal.

For the advice.. I have an appointment with a seamstress tomorrow afternoon but at least that will be a back up if DB gives me some ridiculous price like $400 or something.. They told me on the phone that I must pay the whole price in advance.. Is that normal? I would think for something as precious as a wedding gown you would make 2 payments for “just in case” purposes.

It does not sound normal to me to pay the entire fee in advance. I thought most places took a deposit or nothing at all, and you paid once the alterations were complete…but I may be wrong. I’d be interested in hearing some other experiences on this.

So I took my dress to David’s Bridal last night and it went better than I expected. She was able to take in the sides to give me a killer waist! and also brought up the top of the dress. So I am there with all of the pins in the dress waiting to hear the damage and she tells me my total was $130.. At first I was like that’s it expecting her to say the worst like $250-300 🙂
I did read the recommendations in this thread to take it to a seamstress but after she told me the price I was like what ever extra I could have saved wasn’t worth the hassel of dragging my dress all over NYC to find the right seamstress.. So with my ceremony being on the 22nd I will get Bernie back on the 18th..
Thanks again Ladies for your wonderful insight and advice as always!
